Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch and Sidewinder for 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max with 5.5 Foot Bed

Updated 07/29/2018 | Published 07/27/2018

Question:

I have a 2018 Tundra crew max with a 5.5 foot bed. I am wanting to get the Keystone Cougar half ton series 28sgs fifth wheel. Would an auto sliding hitch or a standard hitch with a sidewinder kingpin give me more clearance? And if they are close to the same clearance, what advantages and disadvantages does one have over the other? Thank you

For your 2018 Toyota Tundra Crew Max with 5.5 foot bed, there is not a sliding 5th wheel hitch compatible. A Sidewinder is required for proper turning clearance on a truck with that short a bed length.

I recommend using the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50084-58 which are a custom fit for your truck. I then recommend using the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # RP30047 to give you a good hitch compatible with a Sidewinder pin box.

You may also be interested in the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness with 7-Pole Plug # 41157 to add a second 7-way to the bed of your truck for easy connection access and a clean look.

For your Sidewinder, I believe the Cougar uses a 1621 pin box which you can confirm by looking for the tag that should be directly on the pin box itself or by taking some measurements. I've attached an article on measurements to help if needed. For that pin box, you can use the Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret - 16,000 lbs # RP34FR or the Sidewinder with the air suspension for a smoother ride # RP61422. Both options give you 22 inches from the king pin to the rotating turret to increase your turning clearance and give your 5.5 foot bed the distance needed so you don't have your trailer make contact with your Crew Max cab. You will also want the 5th Airborne Custom Wedge for Select Series Fifth Wheels # SWW-03 for best fit and function.
