Question:
I am building a flatbed on a 2012 F450 cab and Chassis truck for a friend. It was a government truck bought at an auction by a dealer and then sold to my friend. It has the factory integrated trailer brake control system on it but I’m not sure if it’s working. Is it possible to install an aftermarket brake controller on this truck that will simply plug in to the existing wiring harness with the use of and adapter harness.

Yes, you can install an aftermarket brake controller on your friend's 2012 F-450 cab and chassis that will simply plug in, although you are going to get an error code and to remove it you will need to go to a local Ford dealer and have it turned off.
As for the brake controller itself, I strongly recommend the Prodigy P3 # 90195 along with Adapter # 3034-P. The Prodigy P3 is the most popular model we carry due to its effectiveness and ease of use. It will activate your trailer's brakes immediately in proportion to the F-450's brakes and offers three different boost levels so you can adjust your braking power.
The P3 levels automatically, has constant diagnostic checks, contains safeguards which defend your controller against shorts, and features an LCD display which is much easier to read than that of other controllers. This controller has been met with nearly universal praise; it has been reviewed by our customers more than 2,000 times and is averaging close to 5 out of 5 stars.
