Can a Hitch Adapter Be Used with a Weight Distribution System

Updated 06/27/2018 | Published 06/26/2018

Question:

Hello, I currently run a W/D hitch on my 2017 Grand Cherokee to pull my Econotrailer open deck 17foot car trailer. I would like to get the front of the trailer a bit more level, to take better advantage of aerodynamics, so I was wondering whether I could use a hitch adapter like those found here to get the hitch a bit lower: Is that safe? Obviously, I will check tongue weights to make sure things are still in the right range. Thanks!

The shank that would have came with your weight distribution system more than likely has multiple holes which you can use to further level the trailer to the tow vehicle. If you have run out of adjustment points then you are going to need a new shank which I have attached a list of for you.

In order to determine the correct rise/drop you need to look for in a weight distribution shank you will want to take a look at the attached help article. Once you find the correct rise/drop for your trailer/vehicle then you can make sure the weight distribution shank you choose is compatible with this. The shanks are all pretty much universal but if you can provide me with hole size and spacing on the shank you have now I would be able to confirm fitment.

I do not recommend using a hitch adapter to level the trailer as this would decrease capacity and may not be rated for use with a weight distribution system.
