this might be a stupid question what does it mean when refering to the lug nuts does the 5 on 4 3/4 inch. is that length of the stud

Good question. The 5 on 4-3/4 inch and other numbers in that format refer to the location of the lug bolts that the trailer wheels need to match for fit. The stud length has nothing to do with that bolt pattern number nor the diameter of the lug bolt. I've attached an article to help further.
