Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub - AKIHUB-5475-35-K Review

Today we're going to take a look at the trailer idler hub assembly for 3500-pound axles. This has the 5-on-4-3/4 inch bolt pattern. Now this trailer hub assembly will fit trailer idler axles. This hub assembly includes everything shown here on the table. The hub itself, the bearing races are included. They are preinstalled in the hub.

Right here you can see the outer bearing race. Turn it around and there's your inner bearing race. The bearings are included, both the inner bearing, outer bearing, the grease seal, zinc-plated grease cap and the five lug nuts. Now this hub is a sturdy iron construction, has a nice zinc enriched 00:00:35 paint finish to it. It is certified by USSAE standards and CSA which are the Canadian standards. A few specs on this.

The application, this is for a 3500-pound trailer axle with the number 84 spindles and it is compatible with axles from most manufacturers including Dexter, Lippert and Al-Ko. The hub flange diameter which would be the measurement from this side to this side is 6-1/2 inches. Because of the larger hub flange it does require 14-inch and large wheel sizes. The bolt pattern on this is a 5-on-4-3/4 inch bolt pattern. The wheel stud size 1/2 inch by 20 and the weight capacity on this hub is 1,750 pounds so when this is combined with one on the other side it will meet your 3,500 pound axles. Now the parts right here, I'm going to go through these all and show you where they install in the hub.

We'll start with the inner bearing which is the larger of the two. That's a part number L68149. The inside diameter of this right here is 1.378 and that will go right on to the inner bearing race just like that right there. To hold it in is the grease seal. It has an overall diameter of 2.565.

That would tap in just like that and hold that into place. Now the outer bearing which is the smaller of the two is part number L44649. Inner diameter on this is 1.063 and that would go right into the outer bearing race just like that. To hold that in you'd use this zinc-plated grease cap. It has a 1.99 flange diameter. Tap that in just like that and you're all ready to go. Now for this video I'm just showing you where the parts go but of course when you go to install this, you do want to make sure that your bearings will be fully packed with grease before installing them on your axle. The last thing you'll have is the five 1/2 inch by 20 size lug nuts. Those would be used to hold your wheel and tire assembly to the hub. Once you put your wheel up on the studs, you just go ahead and take your lug nuts and go ahead and put those onto the studs and then tighten them down and torque them to the correct specs for your application. That should do it for the review on the trailer idler hub assembly for 3500-pound axles with the 5-on-4-3/4 inch bolt pattern.

my bearing went out on my trailer and ruined my hub . I have an older trailer I got a great deal on. my hub is a 5 on 4 3/4 which is hard to find in stores. but they could order it. for a price to high would take to long. and the guy I talked to just didn't. seem enthused to do it. he never did call me back. but through my own research i found trailer and I am completely satisfied. great product and easy to install. and the price awesome. cheaper than anyone. you will be getting my business from now on. In including some pics. 324168

I recently ordered two idler hubs a rim and tire to repair an older trailer I'm trying to make road worthy again. The hubs were for a #3500 Lb Dexter axle. I went with the cheaper hubs and while they are most likely imported the hubs were machined well and fit with no issues. the E-Trailer website was easy to use and really helpful when I was trying to determine what type of bolt pattern I had. Thanks! 292442

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hubs and Drum?

  • Replacement Trailer Hub Assembly for Dexter 8-248 Hubs
  • The Dexter "8-248" is a hub assembly for 3,500 lb axles that uses an L68149 inner bearing and a L44649 outer bearing. This hub assembly was offered in both 5 on 4-1/2" and 5 on 4-3/4" bolt patterns therefore you would need to confirm your bolt pattern in order to choose the correct hub. I have attached a help article to help you find this as well. I have also attached my recommendations on each hub for you below. • Bolt Pattern Referred To In Hub and Wheel Fit
  • Good question. The 5 on 4-3/4 inch and other numbers in that format refer to the location of the lug bolts that the trailer wheels need to match for fit. The stud length has nothing to do with that bolt pattern number nor the diameter of the lug bolt. I've attached an article to help further.

  • Hub Recommendaiton for Trailer with 5 on 4-3/4 inch Bolt Pattern
  • We do have hubs that have the 5 on 4-3/4 inch bolt pattern you mentioned for a 3,500 lb trailer axle like the etrailer.com hub part # AKIHUB-5475-35-K. You'd need to verify that you axles are 3,500 lb axles though to know if this hub will fit. Typically the capacity is listed on the axle or on the VIN plate up near the coupler.

  • Recommended Hubs and Axle for 1984 Skipper Boat Trailer with 5 on 4-3/4 Inch Bolt Pattern
  • Based on your bolt pattern, you will want the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles - 5 on 4-3/4 # AKIHUB-5475-35-K. Then for your axles, you will want the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Straight Spindle Only - 3,500 lbs # ASR3500S05. This will replace your leaf springs and thru-axle. You will simply need to add a 2 inch square tube to the integrated holes of the assemblies cut to the custom length for the width of your trailer. I've attached videos to assist....

  • Locating Replacement Hubs that Use Same Inner and Outer Bearing
  • In order to locate the correct replacement hub assembly for your trailer, you will want to determine what bearing numbers are used on your existing hubs. These numbers should be stamped right inside the bearings themselves. If you cannot locate these numbers, you can also take a few measurements along the spindle using the attached image as a template. You did mention that the inner and outer bearings on your trailer are the same size, but you will still want to determine their specific...
