Recommendation for Reducing Rear Sag on 2015 Ram 1500 When Hooked Up to Trailer

Updated 01/16/2020 | Published 05/10/2018

Question:

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 Sport and tow a 23 ft trailer. It does cause the rear to drop down a lot. It still seems to drive and handle okay but I want to level it out. I looked at the 1000 and 5000 series air springs but not sure which one to use. Is there something in the middle, what do you recommend.

The type of air bag kit that will work best for your 2015 Ram 1500 will depend on what kind of tongue weight is being put on the rear axle with your trailer hooked up. The Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs # AL60818 is more of a lighter duty kit that features a load-leveling capacity of 1,000 pounds. The two springs have adjustable air pressures of 5 psi to 35 psi. The Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 # AL57365, on the other hand, has a load-leveling maximum of 5,000 pounds. This is likely more than what you need, but since the air springs are adjustable, they will still work well to give you a smooth ride for weights below their capacity. Both systems will do a nice job of fighting the rear sag you are experiencing as well.

With that being said, when rear vehicle sag is a result of tongue weight from a trailer, the absolute best solution is with a properly rated weight distribution system. Suspension enhancement systems like the above air springs work better for rear loads that are actually carried on the truck (cargo in the truck bed, etc). A weight distribution system will actually distribute the trailer's weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and trailer, keeping your Ram level and also allowing for an easier ride while towing.

In order to pick out the correct system, you will need to determine your setup's total tongue weight. This number includes both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your truck. Ideally, this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the system you choose.

I recommend using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer # e99044 to verify the trailer's loaded tongue weight. I have also attached a great article that goes into more detail on weight distribution systems and the process of locating the best one for your setup. If you can tell me the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, I will be happy to recommend a specific system.

We appreciate your business. The Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs # AL57365 are a great fit for your 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. The springs are rated for up to 100 psi, so you can use any compressor that will get you there. The heavier duty compressors will allow faster adjustment with less stress, so keep that in mind. My recommendation is to steer clear of the light duty compressors. I'd use the Air Lift WirelessONE Compressor System for Air Helper Springs - Remote - Bluetooth - Single Path # AL25980 if you will be inflating the bags equally. A slightly less expensive option is # AL25592 which is also good but does require running the wiring and hose inside your cab. If you need adjustment side to side, then use # AL25812 or wireless # AL72000.
