According to page 230 in the owner's manual for your 2012 Ford Edge with the 2.0L I4 engine, the towing capacity of the vehicle is 1,500 lbs. Although the trailer hitch receiver is most likely rated for more than this figure, you will need to abide by the lower of the two as that will be the limiting factor. Therefore, as long as the weight of the trailer and all of it's cargo does not exceed 1,500 lbs then yes you can tow it.
In order to tow a trailer with your Edge you are going to need a trailer hitch receiver, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. If you do not already have these items then I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13067, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56120, and the Ball Mount Kit part # 989900. You will need to review the attached help article to ensure the rise/drop of the above ball mounts are correct for your vehicle/trailer.
If you are also looking for a smaller utility trailer that is more inline with your vehicle's towing capacity, I recommend the Detail K2 Mighty Multi Utility Trailer part # K2MMT5X7. This trailer only weighs 451 lbs which means you have an additional 1,079 lbs for cargo. I have attached a review video of this trailer for you in addition to an install video of both the trailer hitch and wiring harness.
