Distance Between Bed Rails for Installation of Curt E5 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch
Updated 01/25/2013 | Published 08/10/2011 >
Question:
My fifth wheel hitch was in my shop when it burned earlier this year and I was looking at your Curt 16K pound hitch as a replacement. I just need the hitch since my rails are already mounted in my 2004 Chevy 2500 pickup. I wanted to know if the distance between the rails is standard for most hitches and what the measurement is for the Curt hitch in particular. Thanks.

Do you know who manufactured your existing bed rails?
The Curt E5 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch you referenced, part # C16115 are compatible with universal rails manufactured by Reese, Curt and Valley. A universal rail will have three mounting slots on each side of the rail, as shown in the photo with dimensions I have linked to.
Your front and rear rail should be 22 inches apart, measured from the center of the front rail to the center of the rear.

My old 1-ton Powerwagon has a universal rail set, and I run everything in it. Ive got a Reese 15k Pro fifth-wheel rig that s in, and a Curt gooseneck plate that also s into it. When not in use, I can pull both out, and with a couple of pieces of spacer plywood between bed headboard, to rail, to rail, to tailgate ped in place, I have my smooth, flat truckbed back again to carry anything from plywood to furniture in it.Yes, by design, the tab-slots should be 22-inches on center. If you really work your rig a lot, like I do, you may find that new in gadgets have to be eased into the slots, as they may or may not be exactly 22-inches on center. If only someone would make a -in truckbed 1k crane for my rails, Id be the first to some money on a crane setup to lift and lower propane and oxyacetylene torch tanks into my truckbed.
