Question:

Hi, My single axle boat trailer needs new 10 inch hydraulic drum brakes. The previous brakes lasted only 3 seasons before rusting out. I use the trailer in salt water, and would like to have a free backing brake system that will last longer. the previous parts were UFP #32681L/R. I see that you have several marine brake systems available...e.g. dacromet, galvanized, galphorite. Which would have the best life on a galvanized trailer used in salt water? Also, the hubs are rusty too...any reason I should change them also, or just sand them a bit?

Based on your information, I recommend the Hydraulic Brake Kit, Item # AKFBBRK-35-D. This kit is marine-grade, has Dacromet-coating which resists corrosion, and works well with salt water applications. The kit fits most standard hub-and-drum assemblies including Dexter, Lippert, and AL-KO. It fits a 4-bolt mounting flange pattern, works with 3,500-lbs axles, and has the free-backing feature. Left-hand and right-hand brake assemblies and mounting bolts included.

Regarding your hubs, you can sand them but I recommend considering new ones like the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, Item # AKHD-545-35-G-K. These are galvanized and great for marine use like your situation. They fit 3,500-lbs axles and work with most axle manufacturers like Dexter, Lippert, and AL-OK. They fit a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and work with an inner bearing like Item # L68149 and and outer bearing like Item # L44649. They work with 10 inch brake assemblies and this kit includes inner and outer bearings, races, seals, grease caps, and lug nuts.

If these will not work for you, let me know your axle weight capacity (normally on a tag attached to axle), your inner and outer bearings (stamped on hubs), and your bolt pattern and I will make correct recommendations.
