Recommended Drum to Disc Brake Conversion for a 2004 EZ Loader Boat Trailer

Updated 06/05/2024 | Published 05/30/2024

Question:

I have 2004 ex loader galvanized boat trailer with drum brakes. I have replaced the drum brakes several times and would like to put on a brake system that last longer in saltwater use. I was looking at drum to disc conversion, easier to clean and maintain hopefully after a saltwater dip. I would appreciate any information you can offer. I assume I am looking for a complete kit from the brake controller, new lines, and the entire brake assembly. Thank you, David

Hey David, great idea to make the switch. So to start you're going to need the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR35D, which will work with 3,500 lb axles, has a Dacromet coating for superior corrosion resistance for freshwater or saltwater, and will work with 13" or larger wheels.

Next, you're going to need a new actuator which you can use the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Disc Brakes # HBA16-252-82. This includes the breakaway kit, brake lines, and a built in bleeder which lets you easily flush the air out of your brakes.

Finally, you'll need a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 which can work with up to 4 axles, has an easy to read LED screen, and an automatic leveler which will let you put it at any angle for install.
