Can a 1-7/8 inch Hitch Ball be Used with a 2 inch Coupler on Trailer

I just bought a used trailer with a 2 inch coupler. My tow set up has a 1 7/8 ball. Is that close enough or do l need to get a 2 inch ball?

If your trailer has a 2 inch coupler then you definitely need to go with a 2 inch ball. Even though 1/8 inches doesn't sound like very much, it is enough that your trailer could come uncoupled under the right conditions.

I have attached a link to our selection of 2 inch hitch balls for you to filter through. You will just need to be sure that the shank of the hitch ball has the correct diameter and that it is long enough for your ball mount.

For example, the popular Curt 2 inch Hitch Ball # A-90 has a shank that is 1-1/4 inches in diameter x 2-5/8 inches long.

I towed a 20’ trailer loaded with furniture from Tampa Bay Area to NE TN. I told UHaul dealer I had a 1 7/8 ball mounted. Since UHaul uses 2” I told him I had one and I can switch it., he told me not to worry, use the 17/8”. That 1/8 “ difference makes 1/16 on each side. I had no problems. I have various utility trailers, boats, car hauler and use the 17/8 hitch.

@Charlie Did they tell you it's okay to use a 2" ball mount in a 2-1/2" receiver as well? That makes me really question the logic that U-Haul (or at least that rep) uses. Technically the 1-7/8" ball will fit with a 2" coupler, but you will be very likely to see the coupler come off the hitch ball, and I'd count myself really blessed it didn't happen in your situation. The #1 most important thing when it comes to towing is safety - and there's no room for error because you can be putting yourself and others at risk when you're on the road.
