Adding Electric Drum Brakes to Trailer without Brakes

Question:

I have a trailer without brakes I want install a set of brakes. All I know is that it has a 3000 lbs axle with 6 stud rims.

We have everything you need to install electric brakes on your trailer. I have attached a great article that details each step and each product needed to add brakes on a trailer, starting from scratch.

First, if your 3,000 pound axle is not already equipped with brake mounting flanges, these will need to be welded on. This should be done by a qualified welder, as it needs to be welded square and concentric. If you do not wish to do this, you can also replace the axle with a properly rated unit that already has the brake mounting flanges in place.

Next, you will need to add hub and drum assemblies to your trailer (if you just have idler hubs on currently). To choose compatible assemblies, you will want to pull your existing hubs and check for the inner and outer bearing numbers, which should be stamped onto the bearings themselves. If you cannot locate the numbers, you can also measure the spindle at various locations where the bearings sit. I have attached an image that shows were these measurements will be taken. You will want to use a digital caliper like # PTW80157, as the measurements will need to be precise. You will also need to match the bolt pattern to your current hubs. I have included an article that explains how to measure this.

Next is finding the correct brake assemblies themselves. These will need to match the capacity of your trailer axle and the dimensions of the above hub and drum assembly that you choose. You will also need to make sure they use the same mounting bolt pattern as the mounting flanges on your axle.

Lastly, you will need to wire both the trailer and tow vehicle to power and control the brakes. The attached article goes into more detail on this process. For a brake controller to install in your tow vehicle, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885. This is a great proportional controller that will activate your trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your vehicle.
