Question:

I am contemplating buying a 7x16 trailer with one axle. The dealer selling it say its so light that it dont need brakes on the axle. Is this true?

It really depends on state regulations. Some states don't require brakes on a trailer that weighs under 3,000 lbs, where other states may require them on any trailer with tandem axles or beyond a certain length.

It may be accurate that it is so light it doesn't require it, but it sounds like you would be more comfortable knowing you have the option. If you want to add brakes, in most cases we can help out with the parts. I recommend checking the axle for a brake flange to see if it has it. Most trailers even with idler hubs still have this flange to give you the option, but there are some that do not.

If you decide to purchase the trailer or need more info before purchasing, have the dealer give you the bearings and seal information for your spindles and the axle capacity. I can help you with all the correct parts from there if you want to add trailer brake assemblies along with the hub/drum assemblies and wiring needed.
