The Tow Ready 7-Pole Round Pin to 4-Flat Adapter # 47405 referenced in your question is designed to adapt a 7-way round pin to a 4-flat connector that you can hookup to a trailer that has a 4-way. If this is what your trailer uses, and your existing 7-Way round has the traditional pins as depicted below, then this will work great.
I am not positive how you were connecting the harnesses before, so I can't be sure as to why the brake lights were not working. This adapter will provide an easy solution for connecting the two harnesses.
