Recommend Universal Weld On Trailer Hitch Receiver for A 1978 Winnebago Itasca
Updated 08/03/2017 | Published 08/01/2017 >
Question:
I have a 1978 Winnebago Itasca that Id like to put a receiver on to possibly tow a small car. Id might also use the receiver to carry a spare tire at the same time. Heavy gauge might be appropriate. The frame in the rear has a , a 21/2 x 5inch piece of channel turned in with a strap angled toward the front of the rig. Couple of hitches that I think might work are below. Could you answer these questions? Draw -Tite 41938 I like this unit due to the extension of the receiver and the flat plate above the receiver. Could I attach the bumper tube to this plate? What is the distanced between the first and last bolt hole on a Draw-tite 41938? Would it be necessary to use the two front holes, to use all 8 mounting holes/bolts? If All holes/bolts are necessary could I add something angle between the RV frame and the hitch to support the front holes? Any recommendations? Draw-Tite-41990-16 Could the bolt on plates be rotated 90 degrees giving me the rearward extension I need? If I fabricate custom plates and purchase the 41990 tube with receiver assembly is there a recommendation on plate material and thickness? Are there CAD drawings of these hitches that I could have to develop my scheme? If you have any other styles you think would be appropriate please let me know. Thanks,

The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 41938 is a custom fit class IV trailer hitch receiver. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend you weld and or make any adjustments/alterations to the trailer hitch receiver or it's intended installation. I went out to our warehouse for you and the distance between the first and last bolt hole is approximately 16-3/4" on center. Yes, for proper usage, it is required to use all of the mounting holes located on the hitch receiver.
The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 41990-07 is a universal bolt-on class V hitch receiver. I don't recommend rotating the mounting plates as this would likely void the warranty. Unfortunately the manufacturers of these trailer hitches do not provide us with CAD drawing.
I recommend going with the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Service Body Trailer Hitch Receiver as this would likely be your best option that would not entail a ton of modifications in order to secure fitment.
