Updated 03/24/2025 | Published 06/24/2017

Question:

I just ordered this Hitch from etrailer. Can you point me to exact installation of this 17501 ? I have see your installation video, but its on 17500, which I think differ from the 17501.

The only difference between Curt TruTrack weight distribution systems # C17501 and # C17500 is the capacity of the spring bars. Installation will be the same for both so you can use the video for C17500 as a guide to supplement the instructions that come with # C17501.

This response is not accurate. The 17500 system has the adjustable preset positioning washer that hold the hitch head in place. The 17501 does not have that and instead has an adjustment rod and washers as well as a hex bolt to adjust and hold the hitch head angle. The instructions are different for this reason. If a person is using the 17501 the installation is very confusing. It indicates the hex bolt as #14 on the instructions but NEVER mentions using this to assist in the hitch head adjustment. This is unfortunate since this bolt should be used for safety reasons to solidify the positioning of the hitch head.

@ChrisM Hey there Chris, Good looking out, you are correct. The The additional components in the # 17501 model specifically, the conical-toothed washers, adjustment rods, flat washers, and an extra hex bolt, are designed to enhance the hitch's adjustability and sway control capabilities. These parts allow for more precise tuning to accommodate heavier trailers, aligning with the 17501's higher weight capacity. Have you been putting in some research trying to find the right fit for your trailer?

@KateF I have both of the mentioned models already. The concern I have is that the directions on this site and on the manufacturer site do not reference the additional parts, particularly the hex bolt that solidifies the low portion of the hitch head. It would be nice since that is the main way to support the assembly and adjust for the correct angle when installing the hitch.

@Christopher Hey Christopher, You're right to be concerned about the hex-head adjustment bolt on the Curt # 17501 TruTrack Weight Distribution Hitch as it is a critical part of the setup, yet it's barely mentioned in Curt’s instructions or on most installation guides online. This bolt, located underneath the hitch head where it meets the shank, plays a key role in setting and securing the correct tilt angle of the hitch head. It's not just for minor support; it actually helps carry load tension and keeps the head from rotating under pressure from the spring bars. During installation, this bolt should be left loose while you adjust the hitch head angle. Once your tilt is set to level your trailer properly, you then tighten the bolt until it’s snug against the shank. Some setups also include a jam nut to lock it in place, and using thread locker is a good idea to keep it from backing out over time. Curt’s documentation tends to gloss over this step, which is unfortunate, because it’s essential to the long-term stability of the hitch. I am going to be mentioning this to our video team to see if maybe we can get a new video that goes over this.
