Recommended Drum Brake Actuator For A 4,000 Lb. Trailer
Updated 06/14/2017 | Published 06/13/2017 >
Question:
Is there any way to modify a hydraulic drum brake actuator for my trailer? I have a 6,000lb actuator on about a 4,000 trailer. The brakes work, but could use some more power.

I do have an option available for you however, I cannot recommend modifying your brake actuator. There are two main factors to consider when choosing a brake actuator. The first being the type of brake actuator, such as an actuator for disc brakes or an actuator for drum brakes. As disc brakes require a much higher psi for proper braking than drum hydraulic brakes, you will need to be sure you have the correct brake actuator rated for either hydraulic drum or disc brakes.
The next thing to consider when choosing a brake actuator is the gross trailer weight (GTW). As you have identified your trailer of having a gross trailer weight (GTW) of 4,000 lbs, I recommend choosing a brake actuator with a lower weight capacity than you current 6,000 lb. system, such as the Toledo Actuator - 2" Bulldog Coupler part # 16006 if you have an a-frame trailer as this capacity of 5,000 lbs. is much more closely matched to your trailers needs than you current actuator.
