Can the B&W Companion Be Used on a Rubber Mat Without Cutting Into the Mat for the Spacers
Updated 05/02/2017 | Published 04/30/2017 >
Question:
I read a previous QandA about the plastic spacers on the bottom of the B and W 5W hitch, Item # BWRVK3500-5W. I understand how this hitch mounts to the under bed bracket. I also understand the need for the use of these spacers. My question is, if I have a rubber mat in my bed, do I need to trim slots in the mat to accommodate the spacers, or can this hitch be mounted directly on top of the mat? I know from experience that a 5W hitch needs to be mounted tightly to your bed for the best, as well as, the safest results. I really dont want to trim up my rubber mat, but a safe towing set up is probably worth it. Thanks for your time!!

Since the customer will need to install the spacers themselves for a more custom fit, it is possible to just install the B&W Companion, part # BWRVK3500-5W, without even installing the spacers if your rubber mat will allow the Companion sit level. I called B&W and my contact confirmed this.
The problem is that over time the rubber mat will get permanently smashed from all the weight of the hitch and trailer pressing down on it and you will need to install the spacers anyways to help make your towing setup more secure.
Even though it is possible to use the Companion without the spacers on your rubber mat, it would be easier to just go ahead and cut the mat now so that you won't have to do it later. Plus your mat will just have the slits for the spacers cut into it instead of having leg marks where the Companion legs will sit.
It is ultimately up to the customer, but I recommend jut going ahead and cutting into your mat now.
