What Circuit Does Center Pin of 7-Way Trailer Wiring Connector Carry

Question:

Hi- Im looking to replace my current 7-pin vehicle connector and noticed that nothing is attached to the center post. Is this to allow for expansion if I want to wire in backup lights in the future. My original install many years ago was at the camper dealership. Is it common to just install 7-pin connectors even if only 6 are needed? Thanks.

The center pin of a 7-way is typically used as the reverse light circuit. Not every trailer towing setup requires this circuit to be active so in a lot of cases we see this circuit left unconnected.
