Recommended Proportional Trailer Brake Controller for Use with Fleet Trailers with EOH Actuators

Updated 03/13/2017 | Published 03/10/2017

Question:

Is the DrawTite Activator 2 brake controller compatible with electric over hydraulic systems? If not which controller would you recommend for a contracting fleet of trucks and trailers? Weve had reliability problems with proportional controllers years ago and standardized on the activator 2 for that reason, but are interested in EOH brakes for 8 to 10k axles now. Thank you,

Expert Reply:

The Draw-Tite Activator II time-delayed type brake controller # 5504 is NOT compatible with electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) trailer brake actuators. But Draw-Tite's sister brand Tekonsha offers modern proportional controllers that are fully compatible with EOH actuators.

The Prodigy P2 # 90885 and the P3 # 90195 both offer the same reliable internal circuitry to provide proportional trailer braking, as well as electric brake operation. The P3 adds user-friendly features not found on the P2 although their operation is otherwise identical. Those extra features include a customizable, easy-to-read LCD display and the ability to store braking settings for multiple trailers.
