How can I remove the locking mechanism. By remove, I mean take it apart.

There is a re-keying kit we offer for the ball mount part # DTALBM6625 it is part # DTLBM02RK. It comes with new lock cores and a wrench that allows you to remove the lock cores.
I attached an install video for the kit that will walk you through the entire process. Basically on the very top under a sticker that removes and exposes an allen bolt. When that's loose the core slides out.
