Necessary Parts and Instructions To Install Brake Controller on 2010 Ford F-150 With Factory 4-Way

To install a brake controller on your 2010 Ford F-150, you will need to install a 7-way connector at the rear of your vehicle as you stated, and you will need to use a vehicle specific brake control wiring adapter to plug in under the dash. I will help you through the process, its not too bad of an install on your 2010 Ford F-150.

To begin, you will want to start at the rear of the vehicle, here you will need to install Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole, part # 37185, which will give you a 7-way connector at the rear of your truck. To install, you will plug in the 4-way on part # 37185, to the 4-way on your truck, then you will need to connect the remaining wires. You will want to check to see if there are 2 wires ran towards the back of the vehicle that are along the frame rail near where the 4-way is plugged into. These 2 wires should either be Blue and Orange or Blue and Black. The Blue Wire would connect to the blue wire of part # 37185 and Black or Orange wire will connect to Black wire of part # 37185. The Blue wire should end under the dash at the brake controller connector and will need to be connected to brake controller through the connector and brake controller adapter to blue wire on brake controller and the Black wire should have constant 12-volt power which you can test with circuit tester # PTW2993. If you do not see the 2 wires ran to the back, you will need to run the wires from rear of vehicle and connect additional wires.

The White wire is ground and will be connected to the frame of the vehicle. The Black wire is power and will be connected to the battery via an in-line 40-amp circuit breaker, part # PK54540. The Blue wire is the brake control output wire and will be ran and spliced into the blue wire on brake control adapter plug. To run the Black and Blue wire up to the front of the truck, you will want to use Jacketed 2 Wire, part # 10-2-1, which is sold by the foot, you will want to make sure and order more than enough wire.

Now, to install the brake controller you will need Brake Control Wiring Adapter, part # 22292. One end will plug into the back of the brake controller and the other will plug into the harness on your truck which should be located under dash on the driver side, near the kick panel. If you already have a brake controller, adapter # 22292 will work for you to install your brake controller.

If you do not already have a brake controller, I would recommend Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller with Ford F-150 Adapter, part # 90885 and wiring adapter # 22292. The P2 Brake Controller is a proportional brake controller, so it provides power to your trailer brakes in proportion to the brake force you apply to your truck.
