To test a 7-way trailer connector on the rear of your vehicle you can use the Pollak Tester # PK12741. This tester is designed to work with all 7-way connectors. Another option is to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and go come pin to pin testing each individually.
If you're trying to test the trailer side connector it's a little different. A disconnected trailer doesn't have a power source so you will need something to provide it. The Hopkins Tow Doctor # HM50928 and Tekonsha Circuit Tester # 8010 will both test your trailer's wiring without it being connected to your tow vehicle.
