Trailer Wiring Harness for 2001 Ford Explorer XLT

Question:
Ive just gotten a New to me 2001 Explorer XLT 4 door that did Not come with a tow package. A small hitch was added to the bumper by the previous owner. I also have a small trailer that has been fitted with LED lights. My questions are: Do I have to use the converter module kit # 118345 with the LED lights on the trailer, or do the LEDs use sufficiently less current so that they can be driven directly from the tail lights? Also, as Im unfamiliar with the vehicle, can you tell me if the two red capped plugs that hang from the tail light modules on the Explorer One cap on each side are what the factory tow package If it would have been so equipped would have hooked in to? I have not pulled the caps off to see exactly whats in there yet Pin count or ?, just saw them dangling there. If those capped ends are indeed for a factory hitch, what flat 4 pin kit would you have that I can use by just plugging it in? Thanks

If the plug you found is round, and looks like the photo I've provided, remove the protective cap and use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 as you activate each lighting function to see if the plug is active. If the socket is active, you could use part # 118241.
If the plug isn't active, since your Explorer isn't the sport model you will need to use a powered taillight converter, part # 118345. The trailer taillight wiring harness I recommended is designed to plug inline between the taillight assemblies and the vehicle wiring harness that feeds the taillights.
