You'll want an absolute minimum of 1 inch between the tires when the suspension is under full load, but I'd want more than that. I'd shoot for around 3-5 or so inches for safety.

The actual spacing will depend on which tire size you use. Say for instance you used a 145/80-12 tire. This tire has a 21.3 inch diameter (the diameter of the tire will be listed in the product description). Add 3 inches to the tire diameter, and you'd get your center to center axle spacing. This will work no matter what tire size you use. Add the desired space between the tires to the diameter of the tire and you'll get the center to center axle spacing.

If you're needing hubs and your existing wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, the # 8-91-05UC1-EZ idler hub would be a good choice.
