Recommendation For Softening The Ride Of Small Trailer Carrying 2 or 3 Kayaks

Question:
I purchased a small 4x8 utility trailer with a 2000lb capacity and have modified it to carry 2 to 3 kayaks plus gear. It has a two leaf spring and I am considering removing the shorter leaf in order to soften up the ride. The most this trailer will ever carry will be 500 to700 lbs. Would replacing the springs with the 1000 lb Springset be a better option or would removing the short leaf on the existing set do the job?

I may have a solution that will save you some money and work. I spoke with our tire expert and his suggestion was to lower the tire pressure a little until you are comfortable with the way the trailer handles and rides.
We always recommend using the maximum tire pressure and to air the tires up when they are cold. This is to make sure the tires are capable of handling the maximum load they are rated for. In your case, since you said you are limiting the load you plan on carrying, you can lower the pressure to soften the ride. Should you decide you are going to carry a heavier load you can always add more air so that the tires can handle the weight.
Removing the leaf spring would certainly limit the load carrying capacity of the trailer and may soften the ride as you want, but would be a permanent change. My recommendation is to try lowering the air pressure by 2 lbs at a time until you find the ride you are looking for.
