Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes BP01-265 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the replacement kit for the Dexter 12 and 1/4 inch electric brake assembly. This is an oval style magnet kit with the white wires that'll replace the worn out magnet on your Dexter trailer brakes. The oval design on the magnet increases the efficiency of the magnet and it'll also extend the life of the magnet. This kit includes everything shown here on the table. It's everything needed to replace just the magnet on your brakes, the magnet itself, the spring and a clip to attach the magnet to the assembly. This kit will work as a replacement for the following Dexter electric brake assemblies: The Dexter 12 and 1/4 by 2 and 1/2 inch and the Dexter 12 and 1/4 by 3 and 3/8 inch brake assemblies with the white wires, but that should do it for the review on the replacement magnet kit for the Dexter 12 and 1/4 inch electric brake assembly.

  • Dexter Parts Interchangeable with 8,000 Pound Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies
You can replace an existing Dexter brake assembly with the Electric Trailer Brake with Dust Shield, Self-Adjusting, 12-1/4 # AKEBRK-8R. I confirmed with my contact at Axle Tek that their brake assemblies and the Dexter are interchangeable. If you have this # ADEBRK-8R brake assembly and need new brake shoes, you can use the 12-1/4 Inch x 3-3/8 Inch Electric Brake Shoe/Lining RH # BP04-255. For the Left Hand assembly # AKEBRK-8L, you would want # BP04-245. The magnets used for the 8K...

  • Why Would New Trailer Brakes Feel Weak After Axle Replace
Most likely the new axle has self-adjusting brakes which when new are known for feeling pretty weak. The good news is that you can keep applying them over and over while the trailer is traveling and they will tighten and get more sensitive feeling.

  • Old Hayes / AL-KO brakes Replacement Brake Magnets
The Replacement Trailer Brake Magnet for 12" Brake Assemblies # BP01-180 will fit old Hayes AL-KO brake Assemblies that are 12x2 inches. They fit 6K and 7K assemblies after 1988. For the 7.2K and 8K oval you would want the Trailer Brake Magnet For Dexter 12-1/4 Brake Assembly, White Wire # BP01-265 instead.

  • After Replacing Shoes, Magnets, and Drums, Trailer Brakes are Weakm
If you have not adjusted the brakes after replacing all of those parts, that would be the first place to start. You will want to adjust the shoes out until there is a slight but constant drag of the pad on the drum. If there is any grease on the inside of the drum or pads that will have to be cleaned off. Since you have good power to the magnets, it does not seem likely that it is an electrical problem. Make sure that all of the moving mechanisms can move freely and check for any foreign...

  • Replacement Brake Magnet Options for 16" Wheels on 5th Wheel Camper
To choose the correct brake magnet you just need to confirm what brake size you have and who the manufacturer is. Here are the most likely options: - Replacement Magnet Kit # AKBRKR-M12 (For 12" Brake Assemblies) - Trailer Brake Magnet # BP01-265 (Dexter 12-1/4" x 2-1/2" and 12-1/4" x 3-3/8" Brake Assemblies) If you have something else please let me know and I'll be happy to continue helping you look for the best replacement!

  • Do the Colors of Trailer Brake Magnets Mean Anything
Actually on brake magnets for trailers either wire can be used as the power or the ground so the colors don't really mean anything. Most likely the magnet manufacturer just put what ever color was most convenient on your trailer.

  • Checking Electric Trailer Brake Magnets for Wear, Shorts, Amperage, and Resistance
I would check the magnets for wear before going on to test them with a meter. If the magnets show abnormal wear or if you can see the windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet then they will need to be replaced. To further test your magnets, first make sure the trailer is not connected when performing this test. If the trailer is connected, you run the risk of shorting out the brake controller or various other electrical components. To test the brake magnets...

  • P3 Brake Controller Shows Low Output and No Trailer Connected on a 1995 Dodge Ram 2500
If you have a trailer connected and the controller still says there is no trailer connected then it could be an issue within the vehicle or trailer side connectors. Make sure that each is clean and corrosion inside and out including where the wires attach at the back. There are ways to test to see if the controller is the problem. In the truck cab you will need to sever the blue wire several inches from the back of the controller. Then use a circuit tester such as # 3808 to test the end...

  • Difference Between Dexter Brake Assemblies BP01-301 and BP01-365
Dexter recommends that you check the wires of the brake assemblies of your trailer to determine which magnet would be what you would need. If the wires are white you would need part # BP01-265 and if they are yellow part # BP01-301. However, aside from that they magnets are physically very similar. The BP01-301 is typically used on higher capacity setups so it is important you go with the right one for you application. Going to a higher rated magnet than what the assemblies are rated...

  • Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brakes with Worn Wiring to the Magnets
Exposed bare wires can definitely be causing a short or bad ground which will definitely effect your braking. You'll want to repair the wiring. Also, if the brake magnets themselves are worn down to the copper wiring you'll want to replace them.

  • Is a Voltage Drop Normal From Trailer Connector back to Brake Assembly
You should not be seeing a voltage drop that severe from the trailer connector to the brake assembly. Most likely that would indicate you have a wiring issue between where you are checking. I would recommend you replace the wiring with a 10 gauge wire like our part # 10-1-1 which is sold by the foot. Also make sure the trailer connector is clean and free of corrosion and the ground of the assemblies are connected to a clean metal surface.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Assembly that Keeps Breaking Magnet Clips
It is hard to say exactly why the magnet clips of your car hauler keep breaking. If the problem is only on one assembly I would be inclined to believe that the problem is the actuating arm of the assembly or that you are using the wrong clips. I would recommend you take off the hub and drum and thoroughly inspect the entire setup to see if there is anything that would be causing the clip to break. I attached a link to a page that has all of the replacement actuating arms we offer.

  • Integrated Factory Brake Controller on 2008 Chevy Silverado Not Sensing Trailer or Applying Brakes
I do know that the first few years of the integrated brake controllers, there were some performance problems, especially if your 2008 Chevy Silverado has a hold over unit from a previous model year. Hopefully, we can troubleshoot and rule out the brake controller. Start with checking the trailer and vehicle connectors for dirt or corrosion and clean them as needed. Make sure the grounds are grounded correctly and free of dirt and corrosion. Finally, check to see if the tow package on...

  • How Can I Ensure I am Getting the Maximum Braking Power from My Trailer Brakes
If you are experiencing poor performance from your trailer brakes you should check a few things to make sure your brakes are performing at their potential. There are not magnets that are more powerful that you could replace yours with to give you more braking power. The magnets in your trailer hubs have windings in them and are only as powerful as the charge that gets run through them. With that being said, you should inspect your magnets to make sure they are not worn out to the point...

  • How To Determine If Trailer Brake Controller Can Be Used On Triple Axle Trailer
The brake controller manufacturer should be able to tell you the maximum number of braking assemblies that can be used. That said, generally speaking that is brake magnets for a 12" assembly will draw around 4 amps per magnet at full power. For a triple axle trailer, the brake controller would need to put out at least 24 amps. If the brake controller you have now will not handle the load of your triple axle trailer, we know the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195...

  • Trailer Brakes Lock as Soon as Trailer is Plugged Into Tow Vehicle
I have a sneaking suspicion that your travel trailer might have a 6-way connector on it, but your truck has a 7-way, and you're using an adapter like part # 47549. Am I on the right track? There are two accepted ways of wiring a 6-way trailer connector. One uses the center pin as the brake output circuit, the other used the center pin as the 12-volt power feed to the trailer. If the connector on your trailer is wired one way, and your adapter is wired the other, it would cause your trailer...

  • How to Wire Brake Magnets on 8000-lbs Dexter Axle
I'll start this off by saying that trailer wiring does not have any standard colors; so it's possible that your trailer just has different color wiring on it. The question you're referencing refers to the different colors of the wires on the magnets and is just an easy way to determine the difference between the # BP01-265 (white wires) which fit brake assemblies 12-1/4" x 2-1/2" and 12-1/4" x 3-3/8"-which are typically found 7k or 8k axles. Conversely the # BP01-301 (yellow wires) is designed...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Magnets on 12 Inch Brake Assemblies
Brake magnets for 12 inch brake assemblies should have an ohms reading that falls within the range of 3.0 to 3.8. The 3.7 ohms reading on your brake magnets does not indicate that the brake magnets need to be replaced. If you are experiencing problems with your trailer brakes, then there are a few other tests that you can run to try and find the problem. First, with the tow vehicle connected to the trailer, connect a multimeter inline with the brake wire somewhere between the trailer...

  • Replacement Magnets for Dexter 12-1/4 Inch x 4 Inch Electric Brake Assemblies
The magnets you have been using with the yellow wires should be the correct units for your Dexter 12-1/4 x 4 inch shoes. When replacing them I recommend sticking with the same assemblies. The Replacement Magnet Kit (with yellow wires) # BP01-301 that you referenced are designed to work with Dexter electric brake assemblies that have either the 12-1/4 inch x 3-3/8 inch or 12-1/4 inch x 4 inch dimensions, which is why you also saw them recommended for 3-3/8 inch assemblies. Going with a...

  • Should Red Wire Magnets Be Used in Yellow Wire System?
I presume that you are referring to the color of the wires attached to the magnet. The Redline Brand # BP01-265 Trailer Brake Magnet that you refer to just happens to have a white wire. The wires on any given magnet can be any color and it does not matter. Magnets should be selected by their size. In this case it is for a 12-1/4" brake assembly. The wires connected to a magnet can be any color, and there is no polarity to how they are connected, and no change in performance. If you were...
