Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The storage case for the hub was broke in half with several internal pieces. This is because the husband case were shipped in a large volume box with a small trailer wheel with almost no packing. I’m sure both hub and wheel tumbled around in that box caused the damage.

I am so sorry to hear that! I will look into this for you and make sure you get replacements sent for any damaged items. Be on the lookout for an email!

Mounting bracket threads did not allow mounting spare tire on the side. Fabricated pvc spacers. Works great.

I bought two new wheels and tires to prevent having a flat on a long trip which is exactly what happened just one week after purchasing because there was a leak at the base of the valve stem.

I am so sorry to hear that. I would have reached out to them on your behalf but they prefer to speak directly with you, so I went ahead and sent you the warranty contact information for Americana.

I needed tires for my 5 x 8 trailer because the old tires were cracking on the sides. I priced out several companies and one of the larger discount stores wanted nearly double. I got a better deal buying 2 tires with wheels than if I had gone to a tire shop for just tire replacement. I’m very happy with the price, service and shipping time using etrailer. Thanks much!!

These tires are still working great. I use this trailer frequently and am happy with my tires from etrailer. Will definitely order from them again for tires and other parts. Thx

by:

Ordered 3 wheel and tire assemblies to replace my old ones on my trailer, one for as spare. After more than 10 days and back ordered after i ordered them. I get them and they have the wrong valve stems installed. These are load C trailer tires 90 psi. The rubber valve stem that came in them are 60 psi. So now these wheel and tire assemblies cant be used and are now not DOT compliant. My old trailer tires im replacing have metal valve stem which are DOT compliant for 90 psi. After 2 phone calls and a hour waiting to talk to someone. They agreed about the valve stem concern. But no call back with a resolution to the problem as promised. I called back a third time today to the persons extension and it went to voice mail! E-trailer this is a fail!

We are refurbishing and modifying a PWC trailer to haul our 13 foot Puma inflatable fishing raft. We want to upsize our tires/wheels/spare from 8 inch Rims to 12 inch wheels and these fit the bill perfectly and at a great price. Free Delivery was super quick….ordered on Thursday and were delivered to our door on Saturday

by:

Perfect wheel/tire spare for the Triton PWC LTWCI trailer!

by:

I love the new tires...I put them on a galvanized boat trailer I bought in the mid 1990's, I have gone thru 3 sets of rims over the time as the white painted rims would pit...then rust. The other issue was they were only 4.8" x 8" tires but trailer had fenders to accommodate 12" tires. Don't know why I waited so long but purchased larger 4.8" x 12" tires with galvanized rims, what a difference. etrailer helped me select the needed tires and price was great compared to what local stores had, and no one locale had galvanized rims.

etrailers' prices are fantastic and had my 3 tires and rims in a few days, great turnaround time. Will see how the tires last as we are still in the depth of winter here in the northeast.

by:

Exact match to my trailer's existing wh eels.

The R.

8/1/2024

I purchased this wheel as it is an exact match to the tires that came with the trailer. These are excellent tires for a bias-ply. As for the rims, the galvanized coating is superb as there is still no sign of rust. Just rinse well after each use.

by:

I’ve purchased these wheels because I’ve purchased other items in the past from etrailer. Their products are shipped very quickly as told . Their products are of great quality and they back their products if there are any issues . Always had someone from the sales team send a message asking if I am pleased with the product and if the delivery was sufficient. Thanks and will definitely use you again .

by:

The price was a bargain. The tires are as expected, with respect to size, tread style and load rating. The galvanized wheels have excess galvanize plating that puddled as they dried, which may affect tire/wheel balance.

Etrailer Expert

Katrina D.

6/14/2024

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon to hear. These rims are dipped then drip dried. Do you have any pictures of the excess?

by:

Tires and wheels been great a hear later! Fit was good, tire wear is even. No complaints.

by:

I use my trailer 2 to 4 times a month all year round and have put about 1200 miles on these tires. I am happy with these wheels and would recommend them.

These wheels are still holding up well and I would still give them 5 stars after two years.

The item was well packaged just like in the past. You guys are defently my go to company for trailer parts.

Excellent price and appears to be high quality. Needed a spare for my Kayak trailer and this fit the bill.

by:

Replaced the 23 year old Kendra Load Star tires on my utility trailer. Went with the galvanized wheels as I think they'll resist rust better the the original white wheels. From a few feet away they
galvanized wheel almost looks like chrome!

by:

Great price for tire and rim. Won’t know much about it till I have a flat on my regular tires. It’s a spare

by:

I am more than happy with this purchase.
The
price was unbeatable.
I feel much safer and secure towing my boat on the freeway at high speeds for long distances with these tires and wheels.
Shipping was extremely fast, and communication was excellent.
I highly recommend these as an upgrade to any smaller trailer.

Good tiers came when they said they would. I'm very happy with the service I received. I'll continue to tell more people about etrailer.com.

by:

Wheel and tire fit perfectly. Runs great down the road. One of my old tires was bouncing a lot (I could see it in my mirror) and the treads eventually wore out. No local tire store would balance a 12" trailer tire/wheel.

The guides and advice on this site take the stress out of ordering online.

Long term review will have to take place later :-)

Just great. Over a year of hauling household furniture and building materials through 500 mile round trips twice a month during all weather conditions...snow, sleet, rain, hot days and nights, put these tires to the test. Never leaked air, no rust in the galvanization, tread wear is even.

by:

Blew out a tire a Saturday. Ordered two new ones on etrailer.com Sunday. They arrived with free shipping Thursday. Back on the road, the following Saturday. Fast, easy, affordable, and product as described. What more can you ask for! Thanks

by:

After a couple thousand miles of use, the tires are showing no signs of wear. They maintain a constant air pressure and continue to perform well.

by:

Matches my new Triton PWC trailer OEM tire. Great price and shipped next day. Robust box package ensured it wasn’t damaged. Customer service was outstanding at communicating the progress of my order and shipping. I’m always impressed with etrailer!

  • Can You Use a 4.80x12 Trailer Tire As a Spare for 145/12 Trailer Tire
I can't recommend using different size tires on a trailer, even for short distances. That said, a 145/12 tire measures 21.3" diameter x 5.7" wide and a 4.80x12 tire measures 20.6" diameter x 4.8" wide. Therefore, there's only a difference of .7" diameter and .9" width. If I were you, I would probably just use the smaller size as a spare until I could get the trailer into a shop for the correct size. That said, I also can't really officially recommend this. If you want to upgrade I recommend...

  • Upgrading 4.80-12 Wheels and Tires on Triton PWC Trailer For Better Highway Trips
A radial tire like the Taskmaster 4.80R12 # TT48012C is a lot better for longer trips. The radial construction is ideal for highway use as it will run cooler than a Bias # AM30670 tire like you have. It also has a much higher speed rating of 81mph while your tire is most likely limited to 55mph. Personally I prefer using an aluminum Wheel # LH45FR on a boat trailer as it will better resist corrosion. It will also help to keep the tire cooler since aluminum is better at dissipating heat....
