Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Comparison of Two Kenda Tire and Wheel Combos Part # AM30670 and # AM30790
Both tires # AM30670 and # AM30790 are Kenda tires but there are a number of differences. For starters they're different sized tires. The # AM30670 is a 4.80-12 sized tire and # AM30790 is a larger 5.30-12 sized tire. The latter being about 3/4 of an inch wider and over an inch larger in diameter. Also, they both have a C Load Range but the larger # AM30790 has a higher weight capacity at 1,045 pounds when inflated to 80 psi. The # AM30670 is rated up to 990 pounds at 90 psi. With...

  • Choosing a Spare Tire and Wheel for a Jet Ski Triton Trailer
You are on the right track. Either the # AM30660 or the # AM30670 would work fine for you. The AM30660 features a white powder coat finish, while the AM30670 has a galvanized finish. It would be up to your individual preference as to which wheel is better for you. The 3.19 pilot diameter refers to the hole in the center of the wheel that the hub grease cap passes through. The section width refers to the distance from the widest point of the outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner...

  • Can Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel Fit with Brakes on Trailer
Hey Nate, yes the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 can be used with a hub/drum but the drum would have to be smaller. Basically it would need to be a lower capacity than a 3,500 lb axle to fit as those drums are going to be too big. Do you know what capacity axle you have?

  • Upgrading from Load Range B to Load Range C 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
It won't really be necessary to upgrade the load range of your trailer tires as the tires only need to be rated for the weight of the boat/trailer minus the tongue which is usually around 10-15% of the boat/trailer weight. That said, you could upgrade to a higher load range without issue for better peace of mind. The ride would just be a bit stiffer. I recommend the Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel part # AM30670 which has a load range c rating suited for use...

  • What PSI Should Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel be Inflated to
Hey Andy, the trailer wheel and tire part # AM30670 should be inflated to 90 psi when cold under all circumstances and you'll be fine. Unlike on vehicles with trailer tires they need to be inflated to the max psi rating at all times so that you get the full weight capacity and prevent heat buildup which leads to failure.

The design of the galvanized process gives it a rough texture instead of a smooth texture like you see with standard wheel paint. Since your trailer is a Triton PWC for watercraft it likely has this galvanized finish. The only other thing that you need to check is to make sure this tire is the same as what you currently have. Bias tires will also run pretty hot at highway speeds and distances, which can and will lower their life expectancy. This will still work fine, but it is something to be aware of. • Best 12 Inch Galvanized Tires and Rims for Small Boat Trailer
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Radial tires generally run cooler than bias tires, which usually leads to a longer life for radials. I would recommend going with a radial tire if possible, but provided you heed limits such as load range and psi, a bias tire will also work. We currently offer three different tire sizes that have 12 inch diameters and galvanized 5-lug rims. You can check your current tires to...

  • Should I Use Radial or Bias Trailer Tires On My Jet Ski Trailer?
Really you'd be fine going with either tire but the better of the two are definitely Radials. Radial tires have a longer life than bias tires, usually provide a smoother and quieter ride, provide better fuel economy because they have less rolling resistance, and are overall much stronger than bias tires because of their construction. Also, you probably had bias tires on your older trailers because up until recent those were considered the better tire for carrying heavier loads, but that...

The Kenda Loadstar 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 that you referenced will work perfectly as a spare for your trailer. The important info you need when picking out a spare or replacement is the tire size, load range, and bolt pattern on the wheel so you can be sure it will fit your hub. This bias tire matches the size (4.80-12), Load Range (Load Range C of 990 pounds at 90 psi) and the 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern on your current tire/wheel as pictured....

  • Upgrading 4.80-12 Wheels and Tires on Triton PWC Trailer For Better Highway Trips
A radial tire like the Taskmaster 4.80R12 # TT48012C is a lot better for longer trips. The radial construction is ideal for highway use as it will run cooler than a Bias # AM30670 tire like you have. It also has a much higher speed rating of 81mph while your tire is most likely limited to 55mph. Personally I prefer using an aluminum Wheel # LH45FR on a boat trailer as it will better resist corrosion. It will also help to keep the tire cooler since aluminum is better at dissipating heat....

  • Options For Upgrading Tires And Wheels On A Karavan 5 x 8 Utility Trailer
It may be possible to upgrade the 4.80-12 tires on your Karavan trailer. The main factor we need to consider is the clearance between the tire and the fender, as well as the clearance between the inside of the tire and the trailer frame. Our rule of thumb is that we want at least 3" between the tire and the fender, and at least 1" between the tire and the trailer frame. Based on the pictures I can see online, it looks like clearance will be an issue with your trailer, but you can always...

  • Correct Inflation Pressure for Trailer 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
Tire size 4.80-12 is not found on vehicles, but is a common trailer tire size on smaller utility- and sport-type trailers. In trailer use you do want to inflate them to the maximum cold psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires should never be under- or over-inflated since they can deliver their rated weight-carrying capacity only when inflated to their specified pressure. Incorrect inflation can lead to excessive heat which is the main cause for tire failure. All of our tires...

  • Recommended 4.80-12 Trailer Tire for Higher Speed Driving
All of our 4.80-12 size trailer tires and tires-with-wheels are shown on the linked page. For higher-speed highway travel I suggest the 81-mph-rated Load Range C Tasksmaster tire # TTWSF48012C which is rated to carry 990-lbs at 90 psi. Always run your trailer tires at the full psi pressure noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire as doing so reduces its load capacity and increases chances for heat-related failure.
