Video Transcript for Yakima BigStack Roof Mounted 2 Kayak Carrier Installation - 2008 Hyundai Tucson

Speaker 1: Today in our 2008 Hyundai Tucson, we're gonna be doing a test fit on the Yakima BigStack Roof Mounted Two Kayak Carrier System, part number y04041. The Yakima Bigstack is a post style kayak carrier. It's gonna allow us to carry up to two kayaks to get to the water. With the edition of part number y05006, we can carry up to two more kayaks on the opposite side. The poles themselves are a reinforced steel on the inside. On the outside, they feature padding, so they won't harm or scratch our kayaks. It uses four heavy duty straps to hold the kayak in place.

It also features padded cam buckles to further protect our kayaks. When not in use, they fold flat. It features a limited lifetime warranty, and it comes with all the hardware you need to carry those two kayaks. Now that we've got all the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed and set up with a kayak. I've already got one of my Yakima Bigstacks in place here on the front crossbar. Let's set up the rear together.

First off, when positioning the Bigstacks on the roof of your vehicle, you wanna be sure that you installed them offset from one another. That way when they're in their stored position, they do not come in contact with one another.Once you determined the appropriate location for your Bigstack, you can go ahead and work on your clamp setup. So, this is the bottom portion of the clamp. We've got three separate notches here on our Bigstack. The top notch is gonna be for your round or square bars cause you could see we're working with round bars here today.

So, we're gonna go with that top setup. Now you can use the other two for like an aerobar or a thicker bar system. Maybe some factory bars. We'll take that clamp and we'll just fit it into place just like that. For, the other side, we want to loosely install our T-bolt. So, we're gonna come up to the bottom just like that.

Then we'll loosely install our knob. With the Bigstack preassembled, let's go ahead and set it in place. Make sure it's lined up where I want. We'll take the bottom portion of the clamp. We're gonna raise it up and then we'll take that T-bolt and we wanna come down through that clamp. That way it hangs out the bottom like that. Then from there we can turn it around to that direction and start tightening it down. And that way when it tightens down, it's going to bring that clamp upward nice and tight around our round bar.So, while we're tightening it down, it's a good idea to hold the Bigstack upright, make sure that it's sticking straight up where we want it. Just like that. With both Bigstacks installed, now we can get ready to load up our kayak. What we want to do is take one of our straps. We want to loop it around the Bigstack. From there we then want to bring it over to the side like that. For the front, we'll bring it over the windshield side. And by doing all of this, it's gonna make it a lot easier to load up our kayak with our straps already in place. Now we can grab our kayak and set it in place. Now I'm gonna make sure it's even and we want to lean it up against our Bigstacks. Just like that. We can then grab our strap, bring it over the kayak, and as you can see, that's a lot easier than having to run the strap after the kayak's already in place. Let's go ahead and do the same thing for the rear. As you can see when the straps are pulled up around the Bigstack, it anchors itself in. That's what we want. With the straps in place, let's go ahead and tighten them up.What we want to do is adjust our strap that way the buckle is near the top. So, right here. The longer portion of the strap, we want to come down and go underneath our cross bar. Go ahead and pull it all the way through and we'll bring it back up and go through the buckle. Come up through, pull it nice and tight. And at this point and time, we want to make sure that our kayak is straight up and down with the Bigstack and we can tighten it up. Then we can repeat the same process with our rear strap. With both straps in place and tightened down, I've already gone ahead and cleaned up my excess. Now we can move on to our bow and stern straps. First, we'll install our short straps around the grab handle of the kayak. One ends got a looped end, the other one has a buckle. Feed the buckle through the looped end and then pull it nice and tight. Let's go ahead and repeat that same process for the rear of the kayak. Now we can grab our longer straps, the one with the plastic tubing on it. We'll take the opposite end, we're gonna feed it into our buckle and then back down through. Before we pull it up any further, we'll come down to the other end and install our hook. Underneath our Tucson on both the driver and passenger's side, we got some anchor hooks. Now I'd recommend hooking it to the driver's side because then the passenger's side, we have our exhaust. So, we'll connect it. Wanna make sure my plastic tubing here is down as far as it will go. And then I'm going to pull the strap nice and tight. The plastic tubing is gonna help protect the bottom portion of our bumper from any rubbing. The excess we can just bundle up.For the front of my Tucson, I've moved my plastic tubing up a little bit on the strap. I'm going to be following this contour through my front bumper and on down. For my hook, there's actually an anchor point here on the passenger's side. All we need to do is pull it nice and tight and our bow and stern will be secured. As far as securing our bow of the kayak there's not really a whole lot to connect to on the front of our Tucson. So, what you can do is you can open up the hood and find a secure spot underneath. We've found connecting to the inside here would be good. That way when we close the hood, the hook will be out of the way and you'll just be closing around the strap, which will be fine. With our kayak secured, we'll ready to get on our way with our Tucson. And that's gonna complete our test for the Yakima BigStack Roof Mounted Two Kayak Carrier System, part number y04041 on our 2008 Hyundai Tucson.

I have had the exact opposite experience. The straps are all solid and strong and the kayaks are rock solid on there. They even included little rubber tubes for padding for the front and aft tie-downs. In addition to many local trips, I drove 8 hours each way to Michigan last summer and the rack was perfect. 38895

Good product. Always am a little nervous that they will slip on the rack but they never have. (This is b/c we mixed Yakima on this one with different manufacturer for the rack and Yakima is built to be multipurpose so not perfect fit.) That said, nothing but success so far. 464599

Strap Failure After First Use Put two kayak on my roof (tandem and single about 12' long to transport 400 miles. The sticks are easy to install, however out of the box one strap kept slipping and another frayed almost completely. Thank good I had secured the load with my own strapping since I did not trust the Yakama straps. Also, you need a buddy to load with you since the kayaks want to slide away from the sticks. 3200

Difficult for one person to load kayaks on roof. You need more than two hands. Used it once - will now buy used racks, one for each kayak. 83408

Where do I start? I've been whitewater kayaking for 22 or so years now. I've always used used either Yakima or Thule products... Until I bought a 2015 Nissan Rogue with a naked roof. The curvature of the roof and large door jams mean that Yakima and Thule can't make racks for them. I went to a place that does custom installs and again because of the curvature of the roof, they couldn't give me a rack. This meant no kayaking which is really bad news. Enter the Rhino rack system. I purchased the feet, the fit kit, the cross bars and a Yakima "big stack" stacker. The first issue I had is the reccomended size for the Nissan Rogue is only 48 inches. Way too small too haul 4-5 (very light) whitewater kayaks. I called etrailer and they were SUPER helpful, told me I can buy the 65 in cross bars and they'll work fine. I held my breath and placed my order. I was nervous leaving my trusted name brands. The order arrived super fast (they told me it would arrive by Friday but it actually arrived on Thursday) and everything was packaged rock solid. I was impressed. I read the instructions and put the rack system on my car. It took about a hour (it was hot and I worked slowly) but the rack system is SUPER SOLID. I love it. Rhino might have a "forever" customer out of me. -The rack system is very stable. I can't move it with my hands by pushing or pulling. -The rubber stripping you put on the top and bottom of the bar is an awesome added feature AND it reduces wind noise. -Adding the fairing reduced wind noise even further. With four boats on the roof you couldn't hear any extra noise. The ONE thing I dislike is that you need to use the supplied Allen wrench to take the rack on and off the car. It's a small complaint, but other systems I've used in the past don't have them. I paid much less for this system than I would have if I purchased one of the aforementioned systems, but I'm really really satisfied with the product. We will see how well it holds up over long-term use, but it looks awesome! 411249

Eh, a lot left to be desired. I wish i had bought two J hooks instead. This works but the J hooks would be a lot easier and I feel like i would be more comfortable on the highway with the J hooks 506190

Also your customer service was top notch. i got a phone call checking my address for shipping and thought it was really great that someone was actually handling my order with care and it wasn't just me and a computer. I acquired a second kayak and needed a system to fit the factory racks on my 2011 Toyota RAV4. Etrailer.com has always had information on what fits and has always had the item needed for the job. I attached the Yakima BigStack to the top with ease, and, with one other person to hold the kayaks while I secured, tied two of them down for a long road trip to Northern Minnesota. The system worked just fine. The only caveat was in the configuration of multiple boats in the instructions. The diagram has two boats on the same side of the posts, however, I found it more secure to put one on either side ( other reviews of this product on different Internet sites have found similar results.) The boats made it through the trip with no shifting. 140503

One year later: Still using the system and have had no problems thus far. As always, I recommend etrailer.com for any racks and accessories you may need no, Im not employed by them, Ive just always found exactly what I need with them.

  • Recommended Carrier Secure 2 Kayaks on 2006 Nissan Xterra with Factory Roof Rack
We have actually verified with Yakima that their BigStack 2 Kayak Carrier System # Y04041 is confirmed to fit the larger factory crossbars on your 2006 Nissan Xterra. This is a perfect system for you because not only will it let you secure both of your kayaks but its mounting design doesn't take up a lot of space so you shouldn't have any trouble fitting two kayaks on the factory rack of your Xterra, which is a bit limited in terms of space because the bars sit flush with the side rails....

The best kayak carrier for your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek with factory crossbars to carry a pair of kayaks is the Yakima BigStack Roof Mounted 2 Kayak Carrier System # Y04041. I confirmed with Yakima this carrier will fit the crossbars on your Crosstrek; the BigStack # Y04041 will comfortably haul a pair of 10' kayaks. It comes with enough tie-down straps and bow/stern tie-downs for both kayaks although you may need Yakima Hood Anchors # Y07416 if your Crosstrek does not have built-in tie-down...

I have a couple of questions which the answers to will help me make the best recommendations. First, does your 2008 Honda Accord have a roof rack now? If so how wide/thick are the crossbars? If it does not have a roof rack is the Accord a 2- or 4-door? Are you wanting to carry the kayak and the board at the same time? IF you have the factory crossbars that run side to side you could either use a couple of J-style carriers such as 2 of # 59912 or just 1 of the Yakima BigStack # Y04041.
