Padded Clamp with Locking Knob

Swagman Upright Padded Clamp

The Upright has a clamp with soft pads that grip your bike by the frame. Push your bike forward on the rack until the pads click around the downtube, then spin the hand knob to tighten the clamp. The lock on the hand knob secures the rack to your vehicle. The hand knob will spin freely when locked so a would-be thief can't operate it to remove your bike from the rack.

Long Wheel Tray with Security Straps

Swagman Platform with security straps

The long wheel tray accommodates bikes with different wheelbases. With your bike locked into the upright arm, use the included cinch straps to secure your bike's wheels to the tray.

Easy Installation

Swagman Upright T-Channel Installation

The rack clamps to your roof rack without the need for tools. Set your rack on the crossbars and slide the long U-bolts underneath the bars on the front mount and through the bracket. On the rear mount drop the bolts down through the bike tray and around the bar and place the mounting plate underneath. Use the included thumb screws to tighten them down.

Everything arrived in a timely manner and it was exactly what I ordered. Great Job!

by:

Does not fit a Trek FX 7.2 down bar with the red spacers in.

by:

Great product. Easy to put together and sturdy.

by:

The product was great...It has very sturdy and well made for the price. Thank you very much.

by:

Good solid rack however, will not accept large oval/square shape frames.

by:

Upon delivery it looked to be a solid piece.... Happy with the fitment of the bike on it also, I'll be testing it out today.

by:

Product is a great value compared to some of the other items out there. It is sturdy and fits my needs.

by:

Good deal, great price, just what I wanted. I could spent hundreds more on a Thule or others....why? Thanks Guys!

by:

Works well with my older Mountain Bike, but does not fit my new 29er. The clamps that attach to the frame can not be opened wide enough to fit. But you can't beat the price, so I'm keeping it for my older bike.

by:

Thanks I received my Carrier quickly with no hassles. I've been shopping for awhile and came across Etrailer and happy I did. Your pricing and follow through were great and also your on line demo of the rack made it an easy sell !

by:

Great "universal" rack for a lot less $ than other brands. With just minimal knowledge of nuts, bolts and spacers this rack can easily be attached to a slightly curved roof rack, like my toyta highlander.

by:

I own a roof fack for a Chevy Aveo and found out that the bike rack option was discontinued. The upright bike rack fits my roof rack perfectly and was simple to assemble.

by:

VERY good for the price. Easy to assemble, optional u-bolts to fit a variety of rooftop rack tube widths. Fit our Kia minivan OEM rack just fine. Seems very secure.

by:

very flimsyJust installed the rack and took a ride around the block with a mountain bike on top. Bike is swaying. Rack is constructed of thin metal stock, trays, arms, arms connectors are flimsy - absolutely no comparison to Thule, for example. By feel and look, this rack seems simply dangerous to use.

by:

Swagman Upright Roof RackI ordered a bike rack on standard shipping. To my pleasant suprise it was shipped to me "RUSH". I found the rack easy to assemble. The rack seems sturdy and is very similar in design to my old rack. It will be three months until the weather here allows me to use it. So I can't report on its actual performance yet. The quality of the rack falls within the price I paid for it. For the price I am sure it will perform a good job transporting my new bike on top of my vehicle.

by:

Great rack for the money!Very easy to use rack for the money. Takes a little time to set-up and mount for the first time (as with most racks) but securely fits narrow (Nissan) or wide factory (Toyota) load bars. Folds down for a very low profile when not in use. Clamp worked for child's bike (i.e. very small frame), kid's mountain bike (with a wide alternative wide tube frame) and regular adult mountain bike. Love not having to remove bike tires. Recommend keeping clamp completely closed and under pressure when not in use as the red clamp pads can fall out. Other then that great racks with locks for the money!

by:

Good product, works greatJust completed about 500 miles of mixed highway and secondary driving with two adult bikes in these racks on the roof of a Toyota RAV-4. Racks performed flawlessly. The bikes don't sit precisely vertical when mounted because the rack conforms to the slight convex radius of the factory crossbars. But they both held tight, no paint damage to the bikes where the support clamps to the downtube. Relatively easy assembly, just time-consuming the first time out. Overall very pleased.

by:

I had 2 of this rack previously for my '99 Cherokee. The fit on my std roof rack is excellent, quick, secure. My bikes ride well. The locking upright support is a little tight on my Raleigh but with a little effort you can open the jaws and get it on. A more serious biker may prefer a rack that fork mounts. I like the ease of unloading and going.

by:

I was nervous about purchasing these mounts after reading a few of the reviews and because we would typically go for Thule or Yakima when purchasing something like this, but we were pleasantly surprised by the Swagman product. The cost of four mounts was equal to about 1-2 mounts made by Thule or Yakima and the Swagman mounts worked great for our 4 bikes. We have them on our pop up tralier roof rack, drove about 5 hours on the highway and in areas with a lot of cross wind without any incidents or excessive movements on the bikes. I'm wondering if some of the other reviewers did not have the bikes in the mounts correctly. I would definitely recommend these mounts to anyone looking for a deal and quality.

by:

I purchaced two of the swagman upright roof mounted racks the day before I left for a camping trip. They were easy to install on the existing cross bars of my 2009 Subaru Outback. The factory bars are slightly curved so I plan to shim one side of each rack to level them out.
I mounted two full suspension mountain bikes on these racks. The jaws have trouble opening up wide enough to fit the beefy downtubes of these bikes but after a bit of force and unscrewing the jaws all the way, they fit in.
(Bikes were a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR and a Trek Remedy)
Once tightened, the racks held the bikes well and we had no issues with anything comming loose or shaking during the 6+ hour round trip.
The tightening wheel locks with a key but it would have been nice if both racks (ordered at the same time) were keyed with the same lock. Not a big deal, just have to remember which key goes to which rack each time.
There are better racks out there but this one does the job even for larger mountain bikes if you dont mind fighting the jaws a little.
Great rack for the price.

I bought a couple of these for my new OEM VW roof rack with elliptical bars for my 01 Jetta. They fit nice, are made better than expected, and were easy to install, requiring only a 10mm and 12mm ratchet. I will be retrofitting thule lock cores into the the locking knobs on these bike carriers so that i can match the key to my roof rack. I haven't had a chance to put a bike on them yet, but will definitely be taking a bike ride this weekend.

A follow up to my bike racks. I retrofitted these to fit into the Thule Aeroblade t-tracks using Thule square head bolts. Also, i put Thule locking knobs on the clamps to get the Thule lock core to match my roof rack. I sold my old 01 Jetta and bought an MK5 Jetta to put these on. Also, bikes go on no problem. Barely any sway as well. Great product!

Thanks for the additional info.

by:

Great product for the price. Pretty easy to set up. Only issue I have is my mountain bike, which is an XL frame with 27 inch wheels, is pushing the limits of the base. Wish this rack was just 4-5 inches longer that way you have the perfect overlap amount in the middle without pushing the current frame to the limits. With that said it does hold my bike just have to find the sweet spot. But this fits my son’s youth bike perfectly!

by:

I love how compact it is when it is not being used. It gets the job done.

That is great to hear! I am glad it is working well for you. How often do you get out to bike? I mainly ride trails but it looks like you have a pretty solid road bike.

by:

I read the great reviews and purchased this Swagman upright for my 2017 VW Golf. It was tricky to size it properly for the width of my newly installed OEM crossbars (which I don’t like). Took 3 try’s to assemble the Swagman and the rear clamps still don’t feel secure to me. They don’t rest UNDER my base bar, but sit flush with it (if that makes sense). I bought this budget setup to replace my wrecked Rhino Rack aero bars and bike rack. A big mistake for me because I know how secure (and quiet) those well-built products were. This Swagman upright may work for most but it’s a no for me.

by:

This Swagman bike rack is exactly what my family needed. Great quality at an affordable price. We go biking weekly in our Scion XB and with 2 on the roof and 2 on the hatch its perfect. Thanks to the folks at etrailer for a smooth purchase and fast delivery.

UPDATE**** Its been over a year using this rack and if I had the chance to go back in time, I would have spent the extra $$ on another brand. These work, BUT they do not feel secure. The bikes rock back and forth no matter how tight you secure it. One lock will not lock and the other is sketchy at best. The downtube clamps scratch the bikes paint and the tightening mechanism stripped on one of my units. My kids walmart bikes are one thing but my Trek road and mtb deserve better. You get what you pay for.

  • How To Carry 4 Bikes On A 2008 Mazda 5
I do have a couple options for you but Class I hitches like the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame part # 24773 that fits the 2008 Mazda 5 are designed to only carry 2 bikes because of it's limited tongue weight rating. The weight of the bikes and bike rack is all considered tongue weight on the hitch and putting 4 bikes on a rack in a Class I hitch would create too much leverage and possibly damage the hitch or vehicle. With that being said, I recommend to get a 2 bike rack for the Class I...

On the Malone MegaSport 2 Tier Trailer # MPG550-TH the second tier crossbar assembly # MPG545 has a weight capacity of 150-lbs. Since the average bike weighs about 35-lbs four bikes could have a total weight close to this limit. By the time you add the weight of the bike carriers you'd probably be over the limit. The two bars on the upper tier will also be too far apart for most bike carriers, plus you'd have to lift the bikes up pretty high! A better option for transporting bikes while...
