Determining Your Load Capacity

A common ratio for determining your winch load capacity is 2:1. For example, a 2,000-lb boat would require a 1,100-lb winch. There are extenuating factors, however, that will determine the appropriate winch size for your purposes.

The ratio can be stretched to 3:1 in instances when the trailer in use has high-quality rollers and is most commonly used on ramps where boats float most of the way onto the trailer.

In contrast, using a boat trailer that has wooden bunks, lacks self-alignment capabilities, and is most commonly used on ramps where the boat must be winched most of the way onto the trailer reduces the ratio to 1:1.

Note that pontoon trailers and other special designs require special consideration when determining winch capacity.

Determining Your Rolling Load Capacity

drawing

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the winch capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factor shown includes a 10 percent rolling friction factor. Note: A 5 percent - or 3 degree - incline is a 1/2' rise in 10'. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

All Dutton-Lainson StrongArm electric winches are built for multipurpose hauling and pulling operations. They are not to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for handling loads over areas where people could be present.

  • Selecting Electric Boat Trailer Winch with Manual Operation Capability
Our range of boat trailer electric winches is shown on the linked page. Many electric winches have a manual cranking option, such as the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Marine Winch # DL25200, which is operated using a 5/8-inch deep socket and ratchet. For a boat/motor weighing in excess of 4000-lbs I suggest the heavy-duty Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25215 which includes a manual crank handle. Winches will last longer when they are used below their maximum capacity....

  • Availability Of Electric Winch That Can Be Powered By 110v Outlet
Hello David, thanks for reaching out. The Dutton-Lainson # DL25200 is powered by 12v DC. This will be true for all of the other powered winches we offer. The only way to use one with 110v DC would be to use a converter and I am not sure how practical that would be for a dock application. The best way to power the winch is with a 12v battery. Another potential solution here is to use a manual winch like the Dutton-Lainson # DL15721, along with the Drill Drive Socket Adapter # DL6456 which...

For your Yakima 66 inch Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08106, I recommend the Trailer Valet XL Trailer Dolly with Chain Drive - 2" Hitch Ball - 1,000 lbs TW # TVXL2. This tow dolly will use chain driven solid rubber tires to help you move the trailer up the incline of your driveway when loaded and is height adjustable to accommodate your needs. It also has an automatic brake that will help you as you take the trailer down the driveway to make sure the trailer doesn't run away from you. This...

  • Recommended Hand Winch For Loading And Unloading Go-Kart In Pickup Truck
I recommend a 2-speed winch with a hand brake for loading and unloading your go-kart. The winch I recommend is the Dutton-Lainson, part # DL14730. This winch has a capacity of 2,000-lbs and can use either cable or a strap. The gear ratio can be changed so you have better control of your go-kart. If you want to use a strap I recommend part # DL24249. for cable I recommend part # DL24045. You will want to make sure you have a secure location to mount the winch.

  • Electric Winch Recommendation Needed for a 20 foot Throphy Boat
It really depends on the weight of your boat. For example the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25200 has a weight capacity of 1,500 lbs but can pull up to a 4,000 lb boat under the right conditions. These conditions just have to do with how much resistance your boat will be experiencing. I have attached a helpful article that goes into more detail about this that you can use, or you can let me know how much your boat weighs and what kind of bunks you have and I can make...

  • How to Power Dutton-Lainson Winch # DL25200 with 2008 Chevy TrailBlazer
Would you be able to send me some pictures of your setup? Typically winches like the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25200 are installed on the boat trailer and they draw power from either the tow vehicle battery via the 12V Power pin on the 7-Way connector, or from a separate battery. If you can give me some more details about how your winch is configured and what you have on your pickup and your Trailblazer I would be happy to help you get it switched over!

While I wouldn't be able to tell you what may or may not be legal in any one state, I can tell you that the winch you asked about, the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25200 does have the capability to pull a wheelchair into a van. I do have to say that it should not be used with anybody on the wheelchair, as winch manufacturers, including Dutton-Lainson, specifically state they should not be used to transport people. This winch does also need to be powered by a 12 volt...

For a similar AC powered winch, I recommend using the Dutton-Lainson StrongArm Electric Winch part # DL24876. • Recommended Boat Winches For 1,000 lbs Boat
Hello Fred. Sorry to hear you have some health issues that are causing you to not be able to use your hand crank, but I love the fact you are finding a way to be able to get on the water! I would definitely be doing the same. I am not sure what winch you currently have on the trailer now, and what the gear ratio is. • Is Fuse or Breaker Needed When Installing Dutton Lainson TW400 Strongarm Winch
The power wire of the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25200 has a circuit breaker built into it so you would not need to install any additional fuses. The breaker is rated for 40 amps. I attached a review video for this winch for more info as well.

The Dutton-Lainson TW400 StrongArm Electric Winch # DL25200 is rated for use with boats up to 4000-lbs total weight. Having roller bunks provides a definite advantage over standard carpeted bunks since this trailer feature reduces friction. However, if the winch is asked to work beyond its capacity, or if operated for longer than 3 minutes between cool-down breaks, you can certainly run into issues. A winch's pulling capacity is affected by several factors in addition to the weight of...

  • Is there a Powered System to Raise and Lower a Ramp Door on a Toy Hauler Trailer
What some customers have done is used an electric winch such as # DL25200 to raise and lower heavy ramp doors. The winch would have to be mounted up high and back a few feet from the door opening. The line will need to come straight out of the winch at least 12 inches, then to a pulley block such as # CU881080 so that it can turn downward as the ramp lowers.

Yes the Dutton-Lainson TW4000 StrongArm Electric Winch - Marine - 1,500 lbs # DL25200 you were looking at can be connected to a marine battery as long as it is a 12v battery that is rated for more than 40 amps. Keep in mind that the battery will not be getting charged from the alternator of your tow vehicle so the battery so you will need to recharge the battery yourself when it is not in use. • Electric Boat Winch Recommendation for 6,000 lb Boat Trailer
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. For an electric winch similar to what you referenced that would be rated high enough you would want the part # DL25215 which has a 9,000 lb capacity.

I also wanted to point out that batteries do not charge from your 7-way, they only get maintained, so to charge a 12 volt battery you will need a separate charger, the NOCO Genius Smart Battery Charger # 329-GENIUS2.
