2014 Toyota Camry

The 4 mounting holes that were drilled in the hitch by CURT, the Hitch manufacturer, did not line up with the 4 mounting hole that were drilled by Toyota on my camry which was purchased new and never in an accident. Even at the widest separation between the left-side and right-side holes the separation between the left-side and right-side holes were 1/8 of an inch too narrow. This required a lot of extra time and effort redrilling the holes on the hitch to make it fit.

I invested four hours total putting the hitch on the car. One hour was prep and cleanup. Could do another in less than two hours easy. I decided to ramp up the rear of the car with boards rather than jack and jack stands since they are always in the way when you're working underneath. (See pic.) I had the wife help me twice when putting the hitch on, the rest was just me. With the right tools near anyone can do it. (I'm 74). Your video and instructions are excellent and so is your product.
Have to mention something that will put a smile on your face. The first thing to be done was to remove the two brackets on either side of the car. They are held in place with two 14mm bolts on either side but they are kind of tough to get at so I decided to remove the 17mm nuts instead since they were easier to get at. A 17mm wrench with a mallet wasn't enough to get the nuts off so I got a 1/2" breaker bar and with all the strength I could muster I finally got those stubborn SOB's to break loose. Only then did I think to take a closer look and sure enough they were welded on (as per your instructions). Luckily they were meant to stay off.

The build quality is excellent and well built. The tolerances are very tight, I had to wallow out one of the mounting holes slightly. It fits a 2014 Hybrid nicely. The hardest part was dealing with the muffler being in the way. I am glad I had a single exhaust design. Also, my vehicle did not have access to the frame to feed the bolt though. I had to use a dremel to open a larger area for the rear mounts. Took a couple hours and had a helper hold the muffler aside while trying to drill required holes. It wasn't the easiest to install so I only gave 4 stars. But the product itself is well made and I feel it will work well.

The receiver fit great on my Avalon. I had it installed by my local mechanic at a very reasonable cost. Quick shipping and reasonable cost were appreciated.

2012 Toyota Camry

I didn't cut off any underbody panel pieces. I just made a slit for the hitch to slide through. Also didn't cut off any heat shield. I drilled a hole for the 1/2" screw and torqued it to xx ftlb as instructed. Every thing worked fine. Hard to believe the video instructed to cut off that much. A bit crazy IMO. Also.. super snug fit. So snug I had trouble getting the M12 bolts to line up with the thread in the subframe. Pain the ass, but eventually got it in.

Very easy to get it installed on our Toyota Camry Hybrid for not very much by our local mechanic.

Fast delivery and everything fit perfect. Easy installation after watching etrailers videos. Lowest price I found on the internet for this hitch. Thanks for the great service.

2016 Toyota Camry

Fairly easy to install. Took 1hr and 45 minutes to install. Don't need the instructions just watch the video provided by etrailer. It easier to use a 1 and 1/8 hole saw then the step bit.

WORKS FINE! HAD A LITTLE TROUBLE INSTALLING IT BUT NOT TOO BAD

by:

This is my 3rd hitch from etrailer.com in the last few years and I'm a very happy customer. This hitch was packed much more securely than previous hitches and came though the shipping process without any issues. The installation was similar to my other installs, but the "hint" in the video of putting the fish-wire thru the hitch mounting hole made it a bit easier. Thanks!!!

All equipment was delivered on time. Hitch, wiring harness, receiver and ball. Watched video's on installation of harness and hitch. Went down to my garage and installed both with the help of my girlfriend. Very satisfied with the products and the installation. etrailer supplied the goods and the knowledge. I am very happy that I went this route.

2013 Toyota Camry

The hitch was of industrial strength sadly unlike the enclosed instructions, which were weak at best. I have installed similar hitches on similar cars and getting this on a 2013 Camry V6 took 5 hours. Others have been a maximum of 2 hours. This includes the trip to Home Depot to get THE tool that you need that is not specified - a one inch metal hole saw that you WILL need in order to install this hitch. In summary, looks good, solid, needs better instructions. Do your own due diligence before you start on this and do NOT rely on the included instructions.
I should also mention that the plastic cover that the instructions say "give back to the customer" I did manage to get back on to the underside of the car with a bit of brute force and a couple fewer of the self tapping screws (bolts?) yet still is secure on the car after installation.

2017 Toyota Camry

Prompt delivery from etrailer. Quality well built trailer hitch. Provided instructions were pretty inadequate but watching the installation video on the website a couple times was all I needed to install this item. For my Camry it did involve some drilling as the video showed but was nothing super complicated. I am pretty mechanically inclined, and doing this installation all by myself took approx 4 or 4.5 hours from open box to cleanup. Very satisfied with this hitch and etrailer!

Works fine, no problems with anything. Tucks up nice under the bumper so its not sticking out. No problems with it scraping the ground as others have said. Solid and built well. Thanks etrailer!!!

by:

Good except that it was difficult to tell if the pin had to go further into the hitch for safety. Also it was very difficult to remove the bike rack from the hitch. I was told by Yakima Support that I should have put silicone spray inside the hitch before putting the bike rack in. God bless you!

Although the product it self is pretty well made, i am slightly disappointed in over all fitment of the trailer hitch. i am sure engineers have their reasons for the hitch hanging so low from the bumper.
install is fairly straight forward other then the need to widen the holes a little bit.
over its a good hitch i knew what i was buying i knew it would hang low.
good product nevertheless.
etrailer always makes it easy to buy.

After a full year of ownership I am still happy with my hitch although it is starting to chip and rust is coming through around the receiver hole.still cant get used to seeing how low it hangs and have scraped it a couple of times coming out of driveways.other then that its a great addition to a car, converts a camry into a pickup truck with a little 4x6 trailer.

I installed this on a 2013 Camry SE. It fit perfectly and it went on exactly like the instructions said. I'm above average when it comes to handyness and it took me an hour including clean up. I did it in my garage with the car up on jack stands. If you are looking for a hitch is recommended this one.

I haven't even opened the box - this review is based solely on my past experience with the etrailer. Take it or leave it.

The review: I have never had the wrong parts shipped or the slightest problem with the etrailer on all my past orders. This is a Christmas present for someone else and I'm sure it will be perfect. Even if this wasn't "perfect," I have absolutely no doubt they (etrailer) would fix whatever might come up

2012 Toyota Camry

We purchased this hitch for our 2012 Toyota Camry LE. Toyota does not recommend towing with this vehicle, nor sell a Toyota hitch for this car. I don't know why, the Europeans will tow a huge camper behind any 4 cylinder gas miser. However we use the hitch to mount our bicycle rack, and it has worked out great for this purpose. We had it professionally installed by our auto-body mechanic, because frankly I'm at the stage of life where I can afford to pay someone who has a lift, instead of me contorting my body like a pretzel to climb under there and proceed to scrape my knuckles, lay down tools out of reach and otherwise frustrate myself into yelling profanity within earshot of the neighbors little kids. However feedback from the mechanic states that in went in like apiece of cake except that he had to cut a bit of the heat shield to make it fit. So if you are coming back from a trip to the moon, remember, you have a little less heat shield for re-entry.

by:

I should have bought the other brand. But the Curt was rated a little higher tongue weight and had a round crossbar which I had thought would be stronger. The Draw-Tite was a square tube crossbar but it had the extra holes predrilled that allow you to reinstall the heat sheilds after you mount the hitch to the frame.(too bad I didnt notice this until after I started the install otherwise I could have tried exchanging the Curt for the Draw-Tite)

The underneath and trunk of my 2014 vehicle didnt look like the 2013 Avalon vehicle they showed in their video's so had to figure my way around the differences, which added time to the install. The instructions call for a 1/2" drill, but even a 1" hole cutter wasnt quite large enough for the head of the 1/2 inch bolt and steel flange to fit thru, so I had to enlarge across the diameter with a round file by hand.....that took quite a while also, especially as there isnt much room to work above the hanging muffler while lying on a cold concrete floor with the car up on ramps.

The Curt hitch's predrilled holes also didnt seem to line up very well and the bend angle of the left and right flange dont seem to be even. The angled portion leading to the drawbar seems too angled on one side and less angled on the other. As a result the driverside contacts/rubs the spare tire compartment, while there is still clearance on the passenger side.

Plus the fastener hardware for my real collision deflector brackets were badly rusted and it took me forever to get them off with lots of elbow grease and liquid wrench penetrant.

Drove 1250 miles, twice, pa to fl. Did the job, slightly bouncy. Make sure to torque the bolts correctly from what I had saw the frame of the camry is in perfect condition.

  • Recommended Hitch Adapter w/ Rise for a 1-1/4" Hitch
Hey Doug! The closest thing we have to what you're asking for is the 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Adapter item # e93YR. This has a 5" rise and most likely won't work for your Camry for the same reason what you're asking for doesn't exist in a 1-1/4" to 1-1/4" size. Any and all hitch adapters and extenders reduce the hitches tongue weight and towing capacity by 50%. A Toyota Camry's hitch like item # C12107 only has a 350 lbs capacity. Adding this adapter fixes the dragging problem but now...

The most noticeable difference is that the Curt hitch will require you to use stabilizing straps # 18050 when using your bike rack in order to maintain the warranty. The Draw-Tite # 36540 does not have the same requirement so I recommend going with that option over the...

Hey Jim! I checked with all of our vendors and I am sorry but the only hitches available for the 2012 Toyota Camry are class II ones with 1-1/4" receivers like the Curt item # C12107. This hitch has a 300 lbs tongue weight capacity but you'll need to use an adapter like the item # HT5R for a wheel chair carrier. The issue with any adapter is it cuts your hitches capacity by 50% so you're only left with 150 lbs to spread out amongst the chair and carrier.
