The Thule Gateway 2-Bike Rack # TH88VR has cradles that can only accommodate up to 35 lb bikes, which is standard for a trunk mount rack so we need to get a hitch installed on your 2016 Toyota Avalon so you can use a hitch mount platform rack that can handle more weight.

I recommend installing the Curt Class II Trailer Hitch # C12107 on your Avalon and then pairing this with the Saris SuperClamp EX Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # SA4025F.

I really like the HighNoon FC because it can handle up to 60 lb bikes with 4.5" wide tires, plus it uses hooks to secures your bike(s) by the front and back wheels. If your bike has a front fender then you only need to use one of the hooks since this rack has straps on the front and back tires.
