Built-In Controls on the Syncronizer

Syncronizer Controls

Power Output Control

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the left of the module to change your settings.

Red Indicator Light

The red LED indicator light illuminates when the trailer brakes are applied. This light glows brighter as the power output to the trailer brakes increases.

Slide-Bar Manual Override

The Hayes Syncronizer keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Hayes Syncronizer review

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Hayes Syncronizer comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Syncronizer. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Universal Wiring Adapter for Hayes Trailer Brake Controllers
part number: HA81789-HBC

Designed for applications that do not come equipped with a brake control wiring harness port from the factory, this adapter plugs into your Hayes electric trailer brake controller at one end and the other end splices into your vehicle's wiring.

Features:

  • Universal wiring adapter provides a quick-disconnect for your electric trailer brake controller
    • No need to cut the plug off the brake controller to wire it directly to your vehicle
    • Makes it simple to plug and unplug controller for use in a different vehicle or for storage when you're not towing
  • Wire end splices into your vehicle's wiring
    • Use on a vehicle that does not have a factory tow package or is not equipped with a plug-in port
  • Connector end joins with the plug on your electric brake controller
    • Compatible with time-delayed and proportional brake controllers from Hayes
  • Wire length: 24"
  • Made in the USA

Installation of Universal Hayes Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hayes electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, in which the wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Hayes brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

This is my second order with etrailer. Both experiences with your company have been very positive. The knowledge and friendliness -along with following up on orders and satisfaction have been much appreciated. Brittany, the customer representative, is a huge asset to etrailer.

by: Richard10/01/2023

25 minutes after placing my online order with etrailer I got a phone call from a representative, ensuring that all of my order was correct was in stock and was being packaged for shipment. I had all of the parts that I ordered three days later, and a verification email that it was delivered. etrailer Runs their business. The way every business should be run. They take care of their customers from beginning to end and today, one year after the purchase. I got an email from them to find out how things were going. Six stars.

by: Ryan H04/08/2024

Super fast delivery and easy plug and play installation. Would highly recommend

by: Benjamin08/22/2023

Super easy to install and the additional information they provided for my specific vehicle made it possible for me to have every piece necessary for a seamless installation.

by: Don 02/06/2024

Great price, no delay as it came the same day as promised. Feel very comfortable dealing with etrailer !

by: Benjamin 08/22/2023

High quality wire harness. I had to order parts from VW to make a pigtail to connect to the factory harness. All this and the part numbers were supplied with the instructions through etrailer.

by: Lawrence 09/07/2023

Splicing the wires was no problem. Instructions were good. The only recommendation that I will give is that you trash all screws with flat screw driver heads. I also opted for bolts, nuts & washers for attaching the bracket.

by: 08/12/2023

Wiring is NOT conventional..
None of
the harness wires matched up to the flat 4 wiring.
Red was yellow green was brown etc.
And wiring or color ceding was included with the 7 pin harness

by: Tracy 03/31/2024

Exactly what I ordered, helped keep the wiring under the dash organized, delivery of product prompt, all good!!

by: Ed09/13/2023

I think it will be a good brake controller, I have not had a time delayed on before.

by: Rodney04/07/2024

Nice product and very easily installati on.

by: James11/07/2018

It's a plug and 4 wires. I haven't installed it yet but most likely it will work. It would have been nice if they had the vehicle-specific cable for their brake controller but then maybe my vehicle doesn't have a receptacle (2006 Jeep Commander). Not sure yet, haven't got that far, don't know when I will. I wanted to do it yesterday but it's been cold and rainy here and I don't have room in my garage to work so I've been working on the Jeep in the driveway. I got the trailer hitch mounted the other day and now I'm working on the wiring for the trailer plug. I put the Jeep up on 4 ramps to give me room to get under it and run wiring. At 275 pounds I need the extra space. When the rain stops and the wind dies down I will make an attempt to install this device, but I got this email first asking me for a review and an opinion. I don't really have an opinion yet and I can only write a review of what I know so far, which is very little. The instructions that came with it are quite simple. They tell you to plug it in and then read the instructions that came with the controller that you plugged it into. I was hoping for something more specific, like where should I look for the signal from the brake pedal to the stop lamps. I guess I'll start at the pedal and look for a place to tie in. Maybe YouTube has a video demonstrating the installation procedure for the controller using this Wiring Adapter. That would be nice too. The price for the item was fair, as was the shipping cost and delivery time. No complaints with any of that. I'd share a picture of the product but actually there's one on the page where it is advertised, the page from which I ordered it. I'm not sure why they want me to "share a picture of my product". As for the problem that it solved for me... I didn't have one. It solved that problem. Now I have one.

Thank you for your review. There is not a port to plug a brake controller adapter into on the 2006 Jeep Commander. If the 2006 Jeep Commander has a factory towing package the wires for a 7-way will be ran to the front of the Jeep. You will then use the hardwire adapter part # HA81789-HBC to splice into those wires. You will also need part # 5506 to complete the wiring to the battery. If the 2006 Jeep Commander does not have a factory towing package it requires the 7-way plug to be hardwired. In this case an wiring kit part # ETBC7 is needed. The ETBC7 comes with the all of the necessary wiring to wire in the plug and the brake controller. If the vehicle does not have a factory towing package you may also need a 4-way flat connector if you do not already have one. The 4-way connector is part # 118408 for the 2006 Jeep Commander without towing package. I have attached a video of installing a brake controller on a 2010 Jeep Commander with factory wires ran and a help article for the ETBC7 installation.

works great

by: Bob P.04/10/2016

Original supplied item was defective, however Hayes customer service immediately sent another unit and it works great. With the addition of a small removable slip in bracket for the console of my 2012 GMC 1500 Crew Cab and the wiring adapter, I can simply plug and play when I need the controller as opposed to a permanent installation that I have in my other pickup.

by: Jonas08/04/2023

Installation was simple and straightforward. Took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

by: Jerry M06/30/2016

Product arrived in good condition packaged very well as always great service and quick response. Will be buying from E-trailer again.
Was able to find a replacement connector for my Hayes brake controller.
Thank you keep up the good service.

by: Dylan 04/10/2021

Works well. I like the delayed brake activation, it seems to be a smoother transition. The custom harness makes installing this controller easy and FAST. Love buying Made in the USA products and etrailer.com has a lot of them.

by: Larry 07/28/2023

Looks good!

by: Frank 11/16/2019

easy to install. Brakes tested good to trailer. I used self taping screws to mount brackets, rather than the bolts and nuts that it came with.It was to difficult to get my hands in position to use bolts and nuts (no big deal).

by: Bob P.04/10/2016

Made the installation a breeze and allows for the plug and play of the controller when I need it as opposed to the permanent installation of a brake controller in my other pickup.

by: Dave 2018 ram 1500 eco 04/07/2019

Installed in 10mins in 2018 ram 1500 ecodiesel, have not used with trailer yet. Seems good for price, mounting bracket could be made a little better. Good service from e trailer

Fit perfectly. Followed instructions and it works as it should. Great product at a great price.

by: Gary03/19/2015

Good controller at a good price. Works as expected. Fast shipping at standard rate. This controller was installed in an 08
Sprinter camper with the help of the on line video from etrailer.
Thanks,

This is the 2nd one of these I’ve bought. I like the time delay application to the brakes. Always will try to buy products made in the USA. The price went up since I bought this same controller 1 1/2 years ago.

by: Nicholas09/22/2020

It took a while to figure out which wire to tap into for the brake signal, but we eventually figured it out. It takes some awkward body positioning to locate the wires above the brake pedal.
