How to Install the Hayes Syncronizer Trailer Brake Controller on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to install the Hayes Synchronizer trailer brake controller for one to two axles, part number HA81725, and we'll be doing this in conjunction with the Hayes custom wiring adapter, part number HA81796-HBC. To begin the install we'll first go ahead and locate the manufacturer's brake controller tow port. The port is located near the firewall behind the parking brake pedal. If we look at the top of the carpeting where we see the manufacturer's wiring harness we can locate the gray tow port plug. Then we can take our direct fit wiring harness and plug into the tow port. Then once we plug into the port we'll go ahead and take our pigtail and route it over to where we're going to be mounting our brake controller. Now when routing your wire, best to stay away from any moving components such as the steering or brake assemblies like the parking brake pedal. Once I have it routed we'll go ahead and secure as necessary.

Now with the pigtail routed and secured we'll go ahead and mount the brake controller bracket. Our bracket is also supplied with some self-tapping screws to secure it. For the the mounting location we've chosen a plastic strip here just underneath the dash. Now once we have the bracket installed we'll go ahead and mount the brake controller. To mount the brake controller we'll also use the same style self-tapping screw. For this application they supply a total of four fasteners, but from our purpose we're only going to need two to get a good sturdy hold of the bracket mounting our controller.

As you can see, with both fasteners secured we've got a good hold of the mount, and the mount's got a good fastening point. Next we'll go ahead and take the pigtail from the brake controller and match it up with the plug from the wiring harness, plugging the two together. Then we'll go ahead, take the remaining portion of the harness and pigtail and secure it up behind the dash. To secure we'll simply use some zip ties. Now once we have it secured, cut off the excess from our zip ties to clean up the install look. With our brake controller mounted we'll go ahead and plug in our trailer connector and we go ahead and hit the brakes lighting up the LED light indicating that we have power going to our trailer braking. Then we have the thumb wheel here where we can turn up the gain or power going to the trailer brakes, or turn it down like if the trailer was empty and we didn't have a load on it.

This will help prevent wheel lockup. Now in emergency applications we can also use the slide to apply the trailer brakes without applying the vehicle brakes. There you have it for the install and operation of the Hayes Synchronizer trailer brake controller for one to two axles, part number HA81725, in conjunction with the Hayes custom wiring adapter or pigtail harness, part number HA81796-HBC, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .
