After putting up with foam blocks for too long I met a fellow sea kayaker who had these. They look great, not bulky and would fit in my TracRac channels. My boats are sea kayaks, 18' long, 22" wide. These saddles adapt great to the hull shapes and are very secure. There is enough slip that pushing the boats up onto them is not a problem. The locking mechanism works, I've never had to reset them (except when I goofed up once and whacked one really hard). Also, the straps are very high quality. The one issue I had was with the pegs in the channels. They were supposed to fit but not quite. A little work with the grinder and all is well. This may not be an issue for newer racks, I don't know. Oh, and no wind singing on the road. In any case I love these things.

Still great, wouldn’t change.

by:

These are great. I had trouble finding a system I really liked but then on a trip one of our friends had these and loved them. They are simple, secure and low profile. I use them with 18’ sea kayaks. The pads flex to fit the hulls just right, the boats are super secure, no wondering around and you don’t have to strangle them into the saddles. I was worried maybe the boats wouldn’t slide easily onto them when loading but it’s no problem. One note, the slugs were just a shade too big to fit in my older TracRac slot. It took just a little work with the grinder, no big deal. Very happy.

by:

Easily adjustable. Very happy with them after 1 year. I carry 10ft and a 12ft kayaks.

by:

Great product, only thing I found was that the rails on the Canadian tire bed rack I bought where slightly narrower than the blocks that slide into the track, however with an angle grinder I was able to get round the problem

I paired this side-loading rack with Thule Aeroblade bars and Rapid Traverse Feet to carry a 14.5' poly kayak on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT (with panoramic sunroof, so my options were limited). This review is based on one 400 mile weekend trip at interstate speeds with some head- and crosswinds.

The saddle construction seems solid and locks into the aero bars' C-channels. The key locking feature is nice. The bumper tie-down straps are maybe not as rugged as I would have expected, so I will keep watch for any abrasion from wind vibration, but the cinching mechanism seems more than capable. Wind noise and a ~5mpg decrease in gas mileage are obviously going to be noticeable, but I found that installing the rubber strip in the aerobars' channel did the most to eliminate any annoying whistling.

I chose the side-loading model over the rear-loading RR581 model because I felt the extra pair of rubber pads would grip a little better for side-to-side motion. Depending on your kayak's hullform, the pads likely won't make full contact, but everything still seems solid for my setup. Installation takes a little trial and error but is no more difficult than installing bars. Solo loading/unloading my 60lb kayak isn't too strenuous on my mid-height hatchback. Once it's up there, you can "walk it" into place.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend Rhino to any other first time buyer without an unlimited budget.

by:

These go on very easy with my rhino roof rack. They are made of hard plastic type material with metal fasteners and they came with 4 straps and 2 keys. I did not find any shifting on the crossbar on my first 400mile trip with a 50lb kayak although there was minor shifting (rolling) of the kayak on the saddles. I recommend them.

by:

Love these. Much more stable and easier to use than big box J racks. I use two of these to carry kayaks, and it comes with high quality straps including bow and stern tie downs. A little vibe due to wind, but nothing you can really do about that.

by:

Looks great got em on today, rock solid. I put them on an adarac ladder rack system. With light modification, they slide into the track. Very nice they include sooo many straps too. etrailer fast shipping and always great information. Thanks!

by:

As usual, great quick shipping from etrailer. Everything I needed was in stock. These 24" C-channel from Rhino Rack are of typical excellent quality. I ordered these with the kayak hull saddles (side load, #580). All the right hardware was included, mounted easily to the Pioneer platform on my jeep. Very happy with everything. These channels have multiple uses for different mounting options (watersports, skiing, bikes etc..).

by:

Holds Kayaks nice and secure

by:

I have used a "J" type kayak carrier in the past (thinking I needed the space on the roof rack)... but decided to go with the 'saddle' type because it is easier to load (you don't have to lift the boat as high). These Rhino Rack side loading saddles are great. They take up less space on the rack AND fit into the t-slots AND have a smaller cross section (i.e. less wind resistance) than my old J style carrier. The rack comes with a quality set of straps for securing the boat to the rack and straps for bow/stern tie-down. I have been buying from etrailer for years. Always great prices, always great service.

by:

Haven't installed yet but the rack looks good to go. The seat protector looks very good and will get installed for trip next week.

Came quickly and etrailer is so efficient and thoughtful! Saved me over $25 on alternate hitch stabilizer.

by:

Haven't used it yet, and looks a little short for a kayak, but like I said I haven't used it yet. But it looks well made, and the fact that you can lock the pads on the rack is a very big plus for me.

by:

15,000 plus miles carrying a hobie outfitter no problems

by:

product arrived before anticipated.
The
rack installed easily and appears to be well constructed.
I was concerned about additional wind noise once the rack was installed per some of the other reviews however once all the plastic strips were installed I have noticed very little.

by:

great product

  • Recommended Roof Rack Carrier for 2 Stand Up Paddleboards SUPs
We do have carriers that will easily handle your 2 SUPs but the Rhino-Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier # RR580 is not ideal for transporting two SUPs since it is primarily intended for use with one kayak. If you want a load-assisted carrier you can use the Yakima ShowDown SUP Carrier and Lift Assist, part # Y04081, which includes tie-downs. This carrier works on all roof rack bar shapes and so long as the roof rack is not the type that mounts to the vehicle door jambs. It also...
