Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Nautic Side Loading Kayak Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rhino Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier, part number RR580. As you can see here, our side loading Kayak carrier is equipped with nice flexible Santo Prem pads, these are 6mm thick, they're really good at gripping the bottom of our Kayak but very abrasion resistant so we're not going to have to worry about scratches and stuff like that on our hole. There's a triple hinge system, one that allows it to rock side to side and then the two here and here allow our pad to flex and conform to the bottom of our hole. Now these are made using UV resistant, glass reinforced nylon. They're going to hold up for a long time, all the hardware is stainless steel so you've got minimal risk of corrosion and things like that effecting the looks. Now here on the very end, we have the secure core key system. What we can do is unlock our cover that's going to pop out and allow us to remove it.

That gives us the room we need to get right in and tighten down our knob, get it positioned where we want it and then we'll replace our cover and look it with our secure core key preventing anyone from gaining access to that and removing it from our vehicle. This kayak carrier is designed to fit on any current bar system that has the T-slot or the channel on top because you can see here on the bottom, we've got the groove tab and also the large black locking tab. Now to get to that, we'll remove our cap and then we're going to loosen the large black knob. You can see as we do that, that allows the locking or the catch tab to come down, we'll slide this right into place, find the appropriate position that we want to mount it and then it's easy as tightening this right back down, replacing our cap. As you can see, we've got it installed. As you can see, our T-slot is still open, there's typically with all bar systems, there's going to be a rubber filler strip that will go in here. It is advisable to replace that to reduce any wind noise or any audible hints that you might pick up if that's not in there.

For our demo purposes today, we're going to leave ours off but then once we've got it in place, we're just going to replace our cap or our strips as we would in any other situation and get us back on the road. You can trim yours to fit around the system if you'd like. Now that we've got all four of our pads in place, let's go ahead and grab our kayak, this is a side load design so we'll just place it on from the side of our vehicle. You can see as we place our kayak up and on, our pads are going to come up around the bottom of it nicely, matching all the contours and giving us a good secure fit. Now let's get our straps and tighten it down. Our straps are going to go around the underside of the bar system that we're using and then it will be pulled just like this, we'll make the same loop going down and around and back over on our other side there. The straps themselves have a nice protective cover that are going to go the full length on the underside here.

Even the cam buckle itself, as you can see, it's in a nice protective sleeve there that why if the wind happens to roll on it, it's not something we're going to have to worry about any damage being done to our equipment. We'll just place the strap into the end of our cam buckle there, pull it right up, as you can see, nice and snug. Our sleeve will slide right back up over that for us, small tag in there, let's just secure that. Just like that. Now let's take care of doing the rear. Now's the time to get our bow and stern secured.

Rhino Rack has also supplied us with the straps that we're going to need to do that, take it through our front connection point on our kayak and bring it up and around. Now you'll want the metal portion to be away from the paint on your car, it doesn't have a sleeve or anything around it like that so you don't want it to be resting up against anything. Just feed it through the connection point that we can find on our bottom side here, we'll feed it through the cam buckle and then we can secure any excess that we've got. Now let's do the same thing on the rear. Now while we're here at the rear, as you can see, we have our antenna cleared without issue. When opening the rear hatch, it looks like it does want to make a little bit of connect but depending on the vehicle and the setup you have, you really shouldn't have any issues because we can adjust this both forward and rear to match up. Now to secure the rear, just like the front, we're going to go through our rear connection point on our kayak, go down and around the metal connection point and then we can go, just like the front, through that cam buckle. Cinch that down, tidy up the extra strap and then we can go out and hit the road. Now we're going to go out through our test course. We're going to start by going through the slalom. It's going to show you the side to side movement just like if we we're changing lanes or doing some evasive maneuvers or something of that nature. Once we go around the corner that starts the series of the alternating speed bumps, that shows us the twisting and torquing action of the rack, just like hitting a pothole or a curb might cause. Then we'll get into the solid speed bumps which shows the up and down movement, just like going in and out of a parking lot, a parking garage or maybe a driveway. That will complete today's look at the Rhino Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier, part number RR580. .

These go on very easy with my rhino roof rack. They are made of hard plastic type material with metal fasteners and they came with 4 straps and 2 keys. I did not find any shifting on the crossbar on my first 400mile trip with a 50lb kayak although there was minor shifting (rolling) of the kayak on the saddles. I recommend them. 561435

Great product with easy to install instructions. Only took 45mins to install and is exactly what I was looking for. Definitely recommend this product! 501813

I have used a "J" type kayak carrier in the past (thinking I needed the space on the roof rack)... but decided to go with the 'saddle' type because it is easier to load (you don't have to lift the boat as high). These Rhino Rack side loading saddles are great. They take up less space on the rack AND fit into the t-slots AND have a smaller cross section (i.e. less wind resistance) than my old J style carrier. The rack comes with a quality set of straps for securing the boat to the rack and straps for bow/stern tie-down. I have been buying from etrailer for years. Always great prices, always great service. 433533

I paired this side-loading rack with Thule Aeroblade bars and Rapid Traverse Feet to carry a 14.5' poly kayak on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT (with panoramic sunroof, so my options were limited). This review is based on one 400 mile weekend trip at interstate speeds with some head- and crosswinds. The saddle construction seems solid and locks into the aero bars' C-channels. The key locking feature is nice. The bumper tie-down straps are maybe not as rugged as I would have expected, so I will keep watch for any abrasion from wind vibration, but the cinching mechanism seems more than capable. Wind noise and a ~5mpg decrease in gas mileage are obviously going to be noticeable, but I found that installing the rubber strip in the aerobars' channel did the most to eliminate any annoying whistling. I chose the side-loading model over the rear-loading RR581 model because I felt the extra pair of rubber pads would grip a little better for side-to-side motion. Depending on your kayak's hullform, the pads likely won't make full contact, but everything still seems solid for my setup. Installation takes a little trial and error but is no more difficult than installing bars. Solo loading/unloading my 60lb kayak isn't too strenuous on my mid-height hatchback. Once it's up there, you can "walk it" into place. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and I would recommend Rhino to any other first time buyer without an unlimited budget. 316131

product arrived before anticipated. The rack installed easily and appears to be well constructed. I was concerned about additional wind noise once the rack was installed per some of the other reviews however once all the plastic strips were installed I have noticed very little. 184206

Haven't installed yet but the rack looks good to go. The seat protector looks very good and will get installed for trip next week. Came quickly and etrailer is so efficient and thoughtful! Saved me over $25 on alternate hitch stabilizer. 163722

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Kayak Carrier and Roof Rack for a 2017 Nissan Rogue
  • For carrying a Kayak on almost any vehicle, I recommend aero style bars, as their width is a better platform for the shape of the kayak. For a rack kit, I recommend the RhinoRack Vortex Aero kit, consisting of: Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars, 49 inches long, Silver, part # RRVA126S-2, or Black, part # RRVA126B-2 Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs for Vortex bars, part # RRRLKVA DK Fit Kit for 2500 Legs, part # DK396 This provides you with a solid rack for your vehicle. • Kayak Carrier Recommendation for Fitting TracRac Ladder Rack Crossbars
  • The best way to carry kayaks on a TracRac ladder rack is using the Rhino Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier # RR580 which fits in the top channel of a TracRac SR ladder rack like what you have. The foam block solution part # MPG159 also fits the bars too but the Nautic will give a more secure solution. This also comes with the needed straps to secure the kayak as well. I also attached a review video link for more info as well.

  • Recommended Roof Rack And Kayak Carrier For 2015 Jeep Cherokee Sport
  • The roof rack I recommend for your 2015 Cherokee Sport is the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero roof rack. This roof rack has aluminum aerodynamic crossbars that has Vortex strips that help reduce wind noise. To get this roof rack you will need part # RRVA137B-2, part # RRRLKVA, and part # DK398. The kayak carrier I recommend is the Rhino Rack Nautic 581 part # RR581. This carrier has spring loaded felt pads on the rear that helps when you are loading the kayak from the back of your Jeep. • Kayak Carrier Recommendation to Fit in Channels of TracRac Ladder Rack Bars
  • The Rhino Rack Nautic 580 Side Loading Kayak Carrier # RR580 does fit in the top channel of a TracRac SR ladder rack like what you have. Most kayak carrier solutions aren't going to fit around the thicker bars of the TracRac but we know the Rhino Rack Nautic does. There are no Thule options for that ladder rack.

  • Stripped C-Clamp Bolts on the TracRac TracONE Truck Bed Ladder Rack
  • The TracRac TracONE Truck Bed Ladder Rack part # TH27000XT-EX would be the correct fit for your 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. The bolts used in the c-clamps that hold the mounting feet to the trucks bed rails are a 3/8-16 x 2-1/2" long button head cap screw. I've seen some of the reviews about them being easily stripped and contacted the manufacturer. The design of the bolts has not been changed (January 2018) and since the issue still seems relevant, I recommend replacing them with 3/8-16...

  • Best Way To Carry 2 12 Foot Long Sit-On Style Kayaks on a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe
  • Since you have 12' long kayaks, the use of a j-style carrier is not recommend as the max length of most j-style kayak carriers is 10' long. I spoke to my contact at Rhino-Rack and they informed me that the best way to carry two wide based 12' long sit-on style kayaks is with a set of saddles like part # RR580. These saddles actually mount to your Vortex Aero Crossbars in the channels which should allow you to position them far enough apart to fit both kayaks. I also recommend using two...

  • Quickly Adjusting the Security Bolts on the Rhino Rack Nautic System
  • I have a solution for you, but if you've already purchased the Clamp-On Nautic system, part # RR570, there's no good way to replace the security bolts and it still fit correctly on your Thule bars. However, the C-Channel Nautic, part # RR580 does fit in the channels of the Thule AeroBlade, and uses optional locking covers over a hand knob to tighten the carrier into the channel. You can leave the carrier's cover off for easy access to the hand knob, and quickly move the carrier left...

  • Ladder Rack and Kayak Carrier that Fits 2017 Nissan Titan with Utili Track
  • There's only one combination of ladder rack and tonneau cover we can guarantee will work together on a truck and that's a Thule TracRac SR ladder rack like the part # TH43002XT-606 which fits your 2017 Nissan Titan if it has a 5-1/2 foot bed and the BAK Revolver X4 part # BAK79525.
