Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.
Determining the Bolt Pattern
The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.
To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)
On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)
Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look together at this Triangle ST235/85R16 Load Range G Heavy-Duty Radial Trailer Tire with the 16-inch Dexstar Black Steel Mod Wheel with an 8 on 6-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Now, this tire and wheel assembly is going to be great for your stock trailers, utility trailers, and campers. This special trailer tire, or ST tire, has sturdy sidewalls so that it can handle heavy loads. Now, this tire is created specifically for trailers, and it's not intended for use on other vehicles.
This heavy-duty radial tire is great for highway use. It is constructed with all-steel belts that will enhance the durability and extend the tread life of the tire. And the computer-generated tread design and premium rubber compounds materials are gonna give you superior traction in wet or dry conditions. So as I mentioned at the beginning of our time together and as we have stamped here on our tire, this is an ST235/85R16. This is a load range G, meaning it has a 14-ply rating.
The maximum load is 4,400 pounds at 110 PSI. And this has a speed rating of L, indicating a maximum speed of 75 miles per hour. Now, this has a sturdy steel Dexstar wheel. And as you can see, it does feature a modular design. And this features a black powder coat finish over an e-coat primer, so this is going to be rust resistant.
And the wheel does use beveled stud holes, which are going to help keep your wheel securely in place on your trailer hub. That's going to eliminate the need for constant retightening of the lug nuts. And the dimensions of our wheel, beginning with the diameter, measuring bead seat to bead seat, it's 16 inches in diameter, and the width of our wheel is going to be 6 inches wide. This has a bolt pattern of 8 on 6-1/2 inches. And in case you don't know, the first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes, and then the second number is the diameter in inches of the circle on which our bolt holes sit.
So to determine the bolt circle diameter on wheels with an even number of bolt holes, as we have here, you're simply going to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the bolt hole directly across from it. The wheel capacity is 4,400 pounds. The wheel stud size is 1/2 inch by 20 or 9/16 inch by 18. The center cap is sold separately, but if you pick one up, you just wanna make sure that it fits the pilot diameter of 4.9 inches. Now, this tire and wheel assembly does meet the Department of Transportation specifications. This tire has a one-year worry-free guarantee, so if within the first 12 months the tire is damaged in any way, Triangle will replace it at no charge to you. Well, that's gonna wrap up our brief look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
