Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

High quality tread, they should do well in the rain, mud and snow.

Needed a spare for a heavy duty trailer I bought this is a great price and FREE shipping! The wheel pattern or design is a perfect match, I'm a happy camper!

I ordered 4 tires on rims. Received promptly but noticed wrong valve stems installed. Called and etrailer sent correct ones and gave credit to get them installed. Took tires for valve stem installation and had tires balanced. 3 were fine but 1 rim had 2 inch runout/wobbled. etrailer made it good by sending a replacement. Etrailer treated me right but 2 different problems with one order will keep me from ordering from them again. If I had installed tires without the balance/problem discovery if would have tore my trailer up.

- AM35099

We just received two tires for our trailer. We have not used them yet to see how they will hold up to our load. I am hoping they will do well. If so we will be ordering again if we aren't in a hurry for them. The only think I'm not satisfied with is how long it took for them to ship. We placed our order, on a Monday morning May 23rd and they were not shipped out until, Friday the 27th. We finally received them on Wednesday, June 01st. Most of the time when you order something online it is shipped out within a day or two not four days later. It took a little over a week to receive the order that I feel like we should have had no later than the 27th instead it was just being shipped that day. If you are in a hurry needing tires you better go to your local tire store.

Good quality, excellent value!

I am looking to upgrade my trailer wheels and tires from 6 lugs to 8 lugs to a st23585 16 14ply tire and I need to have the tire to move out from the springs about 1/4 of an inch. can this be done. Thanks, Paul
-- comment by: Paul F - 08/01/2013

It in part depends on the spindle. There may not be 8 lug hubs available for the spindle used with your axle. If there are hubs available, then the next step may be to add a 1/4 inch wheel spacer to get you the extra room. The best source for those would be wheel and tire shops. The first step is still to ID spindle. To do that, we need to take some measurements of the spindle. See the link below to the R40484 spindle. All measurements need to be taken with a dial caliper to the 1/100th. Once we ID the spindle, we can then determine the bearing kit and the hubs available for it. The other option is to order custom axles specd to the length and hub desired.

I just wanted to double check on the size of studs these wheels AM35099 can accommodate. The literature says 12 studs, but Im hoping theyll work with 9/16 studs?
-- comment by: Will - 08/25/2013

According to Dexstar, the manufacturer of the wheel, it will accommodate both 1/2-20 and 9/16-18 studs.

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Will Going to a Higher Load Range Tire Prevent Blowouts on a 5th Wheel Trailer
First, regarding inflation, trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum pressure as indicated on the tire. If you do this when they are cold (always inflate tires cold) there is no need to let any air out after they have warmed up. The slight pressure increase will not cause any problems, even in the desert. If the tires are inflated to the max and they are blowing out it could mean the trailer is overloaded. But based on what you have said the trailer was going to and from...

  • Do Wheel and Tire Assemblies Come Pre-Balanced
All of our wheel/tire combos like the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" White Wheel part # AM35099 come pre-balanced to an extent. The heavy spot on the wheel is aligned with the light spot on the tire to create a balance that is sufficient for use on trailers. They are not completely balanced and will need to be taken to a reputable shop to be zeroed out should you choose but the light/heavy spot method will be more than sufficient for most trailers.

  • Question About 16 Inch Radial Trailer Tire Mounted On White Steel Rim
The ST235/85R16 tire/wheel combo we offer that is a load range F, is a Karrier tire, mounted on a white powder coated steel rim with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern. This combo part number is # AM35099. This combo has a pilot diameter of 4.90 inches and has a zero offset. This is a 12 ply tire and has a maximum capacity load of 3,960 lbs at 95 psi. • Do Trailer Wheel and Tire Combos Come Balanced
Trailer wheel and combinations that we sell do not come balanced with weights like what you see on vehicle wheels. They do line the heavy spot of the rim up with the lighter side of the tire to somewhat balance it. One reason people do not balance trailer tires is that the balance weights have a tendency to bounce off when the trailer is unloaded and being towed. The light load of the trailer can sometimes cause the trailer to bounce as it travels down the road which causes the weights...

  • Can ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires be Replaced with ST235/85R16 Trailer Tires
The tires that you have now, ST225/75R15, are 28.4 inches tall and 8 inches wide. The larger ST235/85R16 are 31.6 inches tall and 9.25 inches wide. You would need enough space all around the existing tires to use the larger size. Only half of the difference is applied towards the trailer from the sidewall and above the tire tread to a fender or trailer body. That means that you would need more than 1.6 inches above the tread and more than 0.625 inches between the sidewalls and the trailer...

  • What Info Is Needed to Upgrade a 15 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire to a 16 inch Wheel and Tire
Assuming you have the clearance for a slightly larger wheel and tire on your cattle trailer all you really need to know is the bolt pattern of the wheels you currently have so that you can get a wheel that will bolt right up. If you are unsure of the bolt pattern you have on your wheels check out the FAQ article I attached that shows how to determine this. • Should I Upgrade the Tires on my Fifth Wheel Trailer to a Higher Load Range/Size
There is no way to use a tire designed to fit a 16 inch rim on a 15 inch rim. Your best option will be to determine the total weight of your trailer when it is loaded and ready to tow and then pick a wheel/tire combination that has enough capacity. The part # AM10303 is the same size as what you have in a Load Range E and it has a 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. If that has enough capacity for your trailer then that would be all that you need. If you need more capacity you will need to upgrade...

  • What are the Tire Pressure Ratings for ST235/85-16 Trailer Tires?
The ST235/85-16 tires that we provide all have maximum psi ratings of 80, 95 or 110 dependent on the load rating. For example, the load-range G Provider Radial Trailer Tire, # TTWPRG235R16, has a maximum load rating of 4,080 lbs at 110 psi while the load-range E Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire, # AM32743B, has a max load rating of 3,640 lbs at 80 psi. You should go with the maximum psi that your tire's manufacturer felt was appropriate for your tire.

  • Differences Between Tire Load Ranges for Trailers
Differences in Load Ranges mean different weight capacities for the tire. In the tire size of 235/85-16 that you referenced a Load Range F means 3,960-lb maximum load at 110 psi capacity and Load Range G means 4,080-lb max load at 95 psi. Kenda is the parent company. They are made by "themselves".

  • Higher Capacity Trailer Tires and Wheels to Replace 235/80-16 Trailer Tires
You will want to go by the lowest rated component so if the tire is rated for 3,960 pounds and the wheel is rated 3,750 pounds then you would need to go by the 3,750 pounds. If you have the trailer loaded to the max gross vehicle weight rating then it would exceed the capacity of 4 tires rated for 3,520 pounds each. So a higher capacity tire is a good idea. If using the same wheels rated for 3,750 pounds then 4 higher capacity tires would have a combined capacity of 15,000 pounds....

Usually when a trailer or RV is blowing tires it is because they are not properly inflated. You mentioned inflating the tires to 80 psi. If that is the maximum pressure indicated on the tires then that is not likely the issue. If the tires require a higher or lower pressure make sure to reach that figure. It is possible that the tire size used on the trailer is either barely enough for the weight of the trailer or not enough. The sudden shock of a bump could cause a failure in that situation. Going...
