Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Fast ship and great value

Quick shipping, looks like a good spare tire at a good price

Needed a spare for a heavy duty trailer I bought this is a great price and FREE shipping! The wheel pattern or design is a perfect match, I'm a happy camper!

Dave M.

Still happier than a man living with a woman should be.

I ordered 4 tires on rims. Received promptly but noticed wrong valve stems installed. Called and etrailer sent correct ones and gave credit to get them installed. Took tires for valve stem installation and had tires balanced. 3 were fine but 1 rim had 2 inch runout/wobbled. etrailer made it good by sending a replacement. Etrailer treated me right but 2 different problems with one order will keep me from ordering from them again. If I had installed tires without the balance/problem discovery if would have tore my trailer up.

We just received two tires for our trailer. We have not used them yet to see how they will hold up to our load. I am hoping they will do well. If so we will be ordering again if we aren't in a hurry for them. The only think I'm not satisfied with is how long it took for them to ship. We placed our order, on a Monday morning May 23rd and they were not shipped out until, Friday the 27th. We finally received them on Wednesday, June 01st. Most of the time when you order something online it is shipped out within a day or two not four days later. It took a little over a week to receive the order that I feel like we should have had no later than the 27th instead it was just being shipped that day. If you are in a hurry needing tires you better go to your local tire store.

High quality tread, they should do well in the rain, mud and snow.

Excellant service. Very timely delivery. Tires look great. Haven't put enough miles on them yet. Will let you know.

Good quality, excellent value!

I am looking to upgrade my trailer wheels and tires from 6 lugs to 8 lugs to a st23585 16 14ply tire and I need to have the tire to move out from the springs about 1/4 of an inch. can this be done. Thanks, Paul

I just wanted to double check on the size of studs these wheels AM35099 can accommodate. The literature says 12 studs, but Im hoping theyll work with 9/16 studs?

Patrick B.

According to Dexstar, the manufacturer of the wheel, it will accommodate both 1/2-20 and 9/16-18 studs.

Wheels were exactly as described. Excellent Load F tire!! Made by Karrier, were marked with the Load Star name.

  • Do Trailer Wheel and Tire Combos Come Balanced
Trailer wheel and combinations that we sell do not come balanced with weights like what you see on vehicle wheels. They do line the heavy spot of the rim up with the lighter side of the tire to somewhat balance it. One reason people do not balance trailer tires is that the balance weights have a tendency to bounce off when the trailer is unloaded and being towed. The light load of the trailer can sometimes cause the trailer to bounce as it travels down the road which causes the weights...

  • Availability of Trailer Wheel and Tire with Tire Size ST235/85-16 with Bolt Pattern 8 on 6-1/2 inch
We have wheel and tire combos that have the correct size and bolt pattern you need like the # AM35099 which is a ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" White Wheel but nothing we offer has more than a zero offset since basically all trailer wheel setups require a zero offset. This tire has a capacity of 3,960 lbs at 95 psi and a speed rating of 81 mph which is higher than most trailer tires.

  • Do Wheel and Tire Assemblies Come Pre-Balanced
All of our wheel/tire combos like the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 16" White Wheel part # AM35099 come pre-balanced to an extent. The heavy spot on the wheel is aligned with the light spot on the tire to create a balance that is sufficient for use on trailers. They are not completely balanced and will need to be taken to a reputable shop to be zeroed out should you choose but the light/heavy spot method will be more than sufficient for most trailers.

  • Option to Determine How to Replace 6.00-16 Tire & Wheel
We do not have a tire that is going to be able to fit the wheel your 6.00-16 tire is on now as those tires fit much narrower wheels than what modern 16 inch tires are designed to fit. So you'd have to go with a new tire and wheel combined. If you aren't sure what your wheel bolt pattern is I have linked a help article below which describes how to measure to find it. You also need to know the load range you need, which should meet or exceed your trailer's GVWR. For example, if you had...

  • Will Going to a Higher Load Range Tire Prevent Blowouts on a 5th Wheel Trailer
First, regarding inflation, trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum pressure as indicated on the tire. If you do this when they are cold (always inflate tires cold) there is no need to let any air out after they have warmed up. The slight pressure increase will not cause any problems, even in the desert. If the tires are inflated to the max and they are blowing out it could mean the trailer is overloaded. But based on what you have said the trailer was going to and from...

This tire will fit but it will stretch out the tire because an 8 inch rim is not a standard size. Currently, we have rims with a 7-inch width that will fit 235/85-16 tires. • Differences Between Tire Load Ranges for Trailers
Differences in Load Ranges mean different weight capacities for the tire. In the tire size of 235/85-16 that you referenced a Load Range F means 3,960-lb maximum load at 110 psi capacity and Load Range G means 4,080-lb max load at 95 psi. Kenda is the parent company. • Trailer Tires for a 2012 Heartland Bighorn 3610 5th Wheel Trailer with ST235/80-16 Tires
Usually when a trailer or RV is blowing tires it is because they are not properly inflated. You mentioned inflating the tires to 80 psi. If that is the maximum pressure indicated on the tires then that is not likely the issue. If the tires require a higher or lower pressure make sure to reach that figure. It is possible that the tire size used on the trailer is either barely enough for the weight of the trailer or not enough. The sudden shock of a bump could cause a failure in that situation. Going...

The tires that you have now, ST225/75R15, are 28.4 inches tall and 8 inches wide. The larger ST235/85R16 are 31.6 inches tall and 9.25 inches wide. You would need enough space all around the existing tires to use the larger size. Only half of the difference is applied towards the trailer from the sidewall and above the tire tread to a fender or trailer body. That means that you would need more than 1.6 inches above the tread and more than 0.625 inches between the sidewalls and the trailer...
