Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I received the order on time. The tires were not damaged. I took the tires to get them balanced and things balanced out well. The tires were as described. My first impression was that the tread wasn’t very deep. The old tires I removed had deeper tread. The old tires were light truck tires and the new tires were trailer tires so that may explain why there is a difference. The trailer has been on a couple trips and we haven’t had any problems yet. I put them on my fifth wheel and it is around 12k dry and loaded around 14k. From what I can tell, these are an affordable replacement if you have old tires and rims and need a replacement.

Everything is still working out great! No troubles to speak of...

The trailer tire and wheel was ordered two days ago...and shows up today just as promised. It is a spare for my boat and trailer package so hopefully it never gets used but I can say the Karrier tire looks better than the ones on the trailer now. The new tire is above the old trailer spare...what a beast of a tire the new trailer has!

Fifth wheel trailers seem to be a mystery to the people that sell them. I had a lot of questions about the tires that are on my trailer and I never got an answer until I found etrailer. The tire and wheel I bought from etrailer is a spare that I hope to never have to use, but the information I have gleaned from their website has been invaluable.
My product was easy to order , was delivered quickly and at a fair price. "I'll be back" thank you

by:

excellent trailer tires and wheels

by:

Real happy what's the tired I will be buying more thank you

by:

As ordered. Received with some scuffs oh the wheel from shipping. Not a big issue as this is a spare. Tire itself appears to be good quality. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase and the service I received. I'm sure I will be back in the future.

by:

I’m very happy with the quality of this product. Fit and finish are exceptional. etrailer delivers again with quality and price.

by:

Excellent service, rapid delivery!

by:

Great service products that I purchased are good quality and installation was easy

by:

tires and wheels are satisfactory. The only problem i did have was they do not come balanced.

Comments
Most trailer tires arent balanced! If that was your only problem...you could of been decent enough to give these folks more stars! And, for the 100bucks a wheel you saved....you could of taken them to a tire shop or service station and, had em balanced for 5-10bucks ea.!

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

If you're on the fence, just buy them! I got these to replace the bias 4.80-12 tires that came with the trailer. These are light years better. They have a modern automotive style tread, plus they are M speed (81MPH) rated! The gloss black wheels look cool too. They have a much wider and flatter contact pattern with the ground, and while slightly larger diameter, they fit the stock 12" wheel fender perfectly. I've got a lot more peace of mind towing my utility trailer at highway speeds now.

Comments
One year later, and these are still great tires. Super smooth and straight at high speeds on the highway. No complaints!

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

After a recent tire blow out on my Jayco pop-up camper, I realized the rubber on the original tires had deteriorated. I researched for replacement tires and wheels and found etrailer.com! Good price for tires mounted on new wheels.

Great ordering communication. Solid specifications to match for correct ordering. Prompt and accurate shipping. Arrived and installed! Thank you, We’re back on the road for our fall trip!

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Original tires were cracked pretty good, didn’t feel safe. Decided on the black wheels and radial. Original tires were bias belted. Website was GREAT explaining how to order correct bolt pattern and describing the difference between radial and bias belted. Picked radial because most of my use is longer trips (a few 550 mile round trips in my near future. . Decided to get wheels with the tires to refresh the look and now I can throw in a spare - just in case.

Delivery via UPS was quick and as promised. The product looked flawless. I have purchased here before and have never been disappointed.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Finally found a good tire package for my car hauler. Most sites had low value and not the proper size I had been looking for. This package met all my expectations and I did not realize how fast the service was. It is now on my front door! Delivery was beyond my expectations to have two tire and wheels delivered so quickly. Thank You for a great delivery time and what looks to be a great package for my hauler.

Review from a similar Karrier Steel in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Quick shipping, everything looked great, got what I expected which is nice. 5x8 utility trailer rolled so much better with these radials, a huge difference compared to the old bias plys that were original equipment. I like the black wheel, though realistic about the life of the steel in northeast salt. I coated inside of wheel with rust spray coating. Overall pleased.

  • What is the Correct Inflation for Karrier Trailer Tire # AM32739 and is it Mounted and Balanced
The tire, # AM32739, should be inflated to 95 psi regardless of load size. The problem is that under inflating a trailer tire will lead to degradation of the tire. On trailer tires, the side walls are thicker than on car tires so they can handle more vertical load. An under inflated tires side walls will heat up more often and quicker and will lead to early wear and possible failure of the tire. The tire and wheel combinations, like the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16 inch...

The Kenda Karrier 235/85-16 Load Range E radial tire mounted on a 16 x 6 white spoke wheel, part # AM32739 that you'd looked at would have plenty of capacity to cover the GVWR of your trailer. I've linked to a product description video that you might find helpful.

  • Recommended Tires and Wheels to Replace 8.75 x 16.5 Trailer Tires
To replace the 8.75 x 16.5 tires on your trailer, I recommend going with an ST235/85R16 size, which will be the closest to what you have but on a 16 inch wheel. The lowest load rating we have available for this size is a Load Range E. If the hubs on your trailer have an 8 on 6-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I recommend the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with 16 Inch White Wheel # AM32739. If your hubs instead have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, then you will want the Kenda Karrier tire and...

The Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire with 16" White Wheel part # AM32739 has a 0 offset. The vast majority of trailer wheels have a 0 offset but if you do need an offset please just let me know what that is and I will see if we have options for you. • Choosing Appropriate Tires for 5th Wheel Camper Based On Weight
You are correct that when choosing a tire, the load capacity of the tires are added together for the total capacity. For a trailer like you mentioned with a total weight of 13,000 pounds, you will want each tire to have at least 3,250 pound weight capacity. There is not a specific percentage of extra capacity that needs to be taken into consideration. You can certainly use a tire with a larger weight capacity to have some breathing room. The hitch weight is placed on the tow vehicle,...

  • How to Raise a 5th Wheel Trailer to Ride Level with New Truck
Raising a trailer by increasing the tire and wheel size isn't the most effective method. Your current tires are about 28.3 inches in diameter. Larger ST235/85 R16 size tires have a diameter of about 31.7 inches. Almost 3-1/2 inches difference. However, they aren't going to raise your trailer anymore than maybe an 1-1/2 inches or so at the most. First of all only half of the diameter will make a difference on how far the center of the hub sits above the ground. Then you'll also likely...

These will also use the 8 on 6 1/2 bolt pattern for the wheels.
