Video Transcript for Checking Out the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the Americana Metal bolt-in valve stem. So, here's what our valve stem is gonna look like when we have it installed on our wheel here. Now, the main difference between this valve stem and the other ones you're gonna see on the market is that this one's metal and most of the other ones are rubber, because they're more cost effective. So, you may be wondering why you would want a metal valve stem. Well, this is pretty simple. In regards to trailer wheels, the metal valve stems actually have a much higher pressure rating.

This one here is rated for over 100 PSI. Now, granted, they don't give a max PSI, but you'll be comfortable to go over 100 without any issues, and most trailer wheels aren't gonna go too much over that. So, one of the most common questions we get here at etrailer is people want to upgrade the tires on their trailer, that's usually the first thing they do when they get a trailer, they wanna upgrade to a higher load range or a higher-ply tire so they have more room for air and they can load more in their trailer. So, when doing this, they're concerned about the PSI rating. So, obviously the trailer tire you're gonna be using is gonna have a new PSI rating, usually higher than the one that we're replacing it with.

Therefore they're worrying about the wheel being a weak point. Well, that's a really good question, but the trailer wheels actually don't have a PSI rating. The PSI rating comes from the valve stem itself. So, a lot of the rubber valve stems that come installed in your wheels from the factory, now I can't speak for all of them, but I would say a good rule of thumb is those usually limit themselves to about 65 PSI. So if you go with a higher load range tire that requires more PSI in the tire and wheel, you will need to upgrade the valve stem, and that's where this metal bolt-in valve stem comes into play.

In regards to compatibility, you're really not gonna have any issues here with this valve stem, it's gonna fit pretty much any trailer wheel option on the market. Now we'll go into this a little bit more further in the video, but basically, there's two standard valve stem hole sizes. If you have a 16 inch and up wheel, it's gonna use a larger size. And if you have anything under that, it's gonna use the smaller size and no matter which you have, this is gonna work with both. So if you guys are using any TPMS sensors with your trailer wheels, they're gonna work just fine with these valve stems.

You're not gonna have any issues at all. So to start our installation today, we're gonna take our wheel here and we're gonna locate the valve stem hole. For our particular wheel, it's gonna be located down here. Now this could change, depending on the orientation of your wheel. So what we need to do is we can do one of two things. So we can either measure that valve stem hole with a set of calipers, or we could just simply note the diameter of our wheel. So this is a 15-inch-diameter wheel. And I know the 15-inch-diameter wheel uses that smaller valve stem, because there's actually two standard sizes. We have a smaller one, then we have a larger one. So the larger ones are gonna be on your 16 and up inch wheel. So if you have a wheel that's 16 inches in diameter or larger, you're gonna be using the larger grommet. Whereas if you have a wheel that's 15 or smaller, you're gonna be using the smaller grommet. Now what I mean by that is if we take our valve stem here, we take a closer look at it. I'm gonna take off the cap here. And then we're gonna have a nut here along with a washer. There's actually two grommets that are on this valve stem already. We got the smaller one up front here, and we have this larger one in the back. So we don't want to install it with both of those grommets in place. You do wanna remove them, because we're gonna be using this one, which is the smaller one. So go ahead and take that larger grommet off there. You can clearly see they're two different sizes and one of them is quite larger than the other. So because we have a 15-inch-wheel, we're gonna be using the smaller one here. Just go ahead and slip that into position, just like so. So now we'll take our partially-assembled valve stem and we'll place that up through the hole in our wheel. I'm gonna place on that retaining ring there. And then I'm going to take our little jam nut here, snug it up. Now to tighten this down, we're gonna take a 5 1/2 millimeter Allen key and there's actually gonna be an Allen head on the bottom of the valve stem there that this should go into, and then we're gonna use that to hold it, and then we're gonna tighten our nut on top with a 14 millimeter socket. Now there isn't any sort of torque spec for this, you're just gonna be tightening it by feel. You don't need to go completely overboard, but it does need to be pretty snug. So just use your common sense here. You should be fine. Now go ahead and put some air in your tires there. We always recommend here at etrailer to fill the tires to the maximum PSI listed on the side wall and that's while the tire is cold, then you'll go ahead and just screw on the valve caps and that's gonna do it for your installation. So we've got one of our wheels done here. Now we just need to repeat those same few steps on the other wheels for our trailer. But once we do, that's gonna do it today for our look and installation of the Americana Metal bolt-in valve stem..

Bolt-in, metal valve stem is 1-1/4" long and fits through 0.453" and 0.625" diameter rim holes on trailer wheels.

by:

Good solid valve stem.

by:

What can I say, a valve stem.

by:

Good quality product. Makes for a clean look on an aluminum wheel.

by:

This spare wheel for my trailer was all it was adverttised to be at an EXCELLENT price, shipping included !! Service and delivery time was outstanding!

by:

The quality of these valve stems is the best, however there was no information provided as to how much torque to put on the nut during install. You can tighten them until they squash out of shape on the inside surface of the rim, (the rubber grommet) and you do not know how much torque is needed for a good seal. I guess it is a judgement call. Any info there would have been helpful. That is why I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

by:

I had to give an average rating because of the difficulty of installation. Installer had a hard time getting these valves to seat without leaking around rubber graumets at wheel. He did finally manage to get them to stop leaking. I plan on getting pass through tire pressure sensors installed later so time will tell if I made a good purchase

by:

Great product, just didn’t fit the Liger 16x6 wheels. Returned but not an indictment on etrailer. Super fast shipping, great communication.

by:

I replaced the rubber valve stems on my 5th wheel RV with these metal valve stems. I did this because I have Tireminder pressure sensors and wanted a firm valve stem to attach them to. It works perfect and I don't have to worry about the rubber valve stem failing from the added weight on the end of the valve stem.

Sounds like a good peace of mind upgrade, Don. Have you been able to take it for a test run yet with the Tireminder?

by:

Put these on the wheels on my Airstream. Love the look and think the lot support my TPMS better than the rubber stems.

by:

Very nice stems that match the rims I got perfectly. Regrettably they don’t fit said aluminum sendal 15” 5x4.5” rims. The stem fits the hole but the washer is too large. I had the tires and rims installed by a professional mechanic and he’s the one who showed me the issue.

by:

I used these on a camper trailer with a TPMS for 6 years with no issues. Just put on new tires and a new set of the same stems.

by:

All metal valve stems are the way to go.

by:

Haven’t put these on yet, but they look strong and heavy duty for my heavy duty wheels.

by:

I added these stainless steel valve stems to my American Racing Torq-Thrust II polished aluminum rims on my 1968 C10 pickup. They are a big appearance improvement over the old metal + rubber stems. And they add more reliability too! The next step is to add them to the rims on my double axle trailer.

by:

The metal valve stems are outstanding. I would rate them a 5. However, one of mine arrived missing the nut and washer. I had to wait longer but was glad etrailer sent a replacement valve stem.

by:

Still working great after a year! Installed these on my 1-ton truck and 36ft 5th wheel RV rims in order to provide rigid support for stem-mounted Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors.

by:

Well built, definitely worth it.

by:

Well made and fit great

by:

The products are just what I wanted. The problem is that you have too many choices. So I had to search a lot just to find exactly what I needed.

These valve stems have worked great! They hold the TPMS sensor tighter to the wheel and more securely than the factory rubber ones. No leaks great product after a year!

by:

Great trailer tire!

by:

I purchased these valve stems for my camper. I was concerned I may not be able to tighten them up because there is not a lot of room around where the stem comes through the rim I watched the video they had about them and they did not say the socket size so I called and was informed a 7/16 or 1/2 socket I checked a 1/2 socket and it fit so I ordered them when they arrived it takes a 9/16 socket. So a 9/16 socket will not fit. So no way to instill them. They look like they are made nice and of quality. I just wish they had of told me the right size or showed it in there video.

Fit my new rim perfectly

  • 235/8516R Load Range G Tire That Fits 16" x 6" Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel
Hello Martin, Unfortunately not; I googled the Hercules website and they say their 235/8516R requires a wheel that is 6-1/2" wide at minimum or 7" wide at maximum, and the # AM20744 is a 6" wide rim. We do have a 235/8516R load range G tire that fits the # AM20744, however; which is the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16. This is a 14-ply tire like the Hercules, and the only other thing to keep in mind is for the wheel you'd need Valve Stem # AM20906. As for the...

  • What Is The Max PSI The Lionshead Aluminum Liger Trailer Wheel LH49FR Can Handle?
Hi again, Shawn! Trailer wheels typically do not have psi ratings as that refers more to the tire and valve stem. With the Lionshead Liger # LH49FR having a rubber valve stem like the # AM20907, it is currently rated to 100 psi and under. If you wanted to get a tire that runs a higher psi rating, you will need the Americana # AM20906. This will be rated for anything over 100 psi. You will not be able to put a tire on this that will cause the wheel to fail before the valve stem or tire. Was...

  • Can I Use Load Range G Tires On a Wheel with Load Range E Tires
The "J" that you are referring to has nothing to do with the load range but rather the shape of the bead on the trailer wheel. The main issues you are going to run into when upgrading to load range G tires is wheel capacity, not psi. The majority of 16x6 wheels with a 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern will be rated for enough to hold a load range G tire but if you instead have a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern then we no not carry any wheels rated for enough to hold a load range G tire so I doubt yours...

  • Can I Determine the psi Rating of a Wheel
Since wheels will be able to withstand the psi rating of any of the tires that are meant to fit it you will need to look at the valve stem as that is the deciding factor. If your valve stem has the rubber all the way up to the threads, like part # AM20903, then it will be rated around 65 psi. If there is some reinforcement between the rubber and the threads, like part # AM20904 or # AM20907, then your valve stem can be rated between 80 and 100 psi. The only valve stems that are rated for...

  • What Is The Max PSI Rating For The Aluminum Eagle Trailer Wheel LH48VR?
Hello Phillip, thanks for reaching out. Trailer rims like the Aluminum Eagle Trailer Wheel # LH48VR do not have a PSI rating. They can handle the PSI of any 16" trailer tire. The actual PSI rating is determined by the valve stem, which for the # LH48VR wheel is a rubber valve stem rated for up to 80 PSI. If your tires go higher than 80 PSI, replace the rubber valve stems with the metal valve stem part # AM20906 which are rated for over 200 PSI.

As far as tires go I would definitely keep them the same size. People ask all the time about upgrading to a larger tire and it almost never works out because of clearance. The difference between 235/80R16 and 235/85R16 isn't massive but I don't think you're going to gain anything by switching. I don't really think it is necessary but, if...

  • Will Going to a Tire with Higher Ply Rating Prevent Blow Outs on a Livestock Trailer
The main reasons why trailer tires blow out is heat generated from under inflated tires and overloading the tires. Trailer tires should be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire.
