How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Maintenance-free, corrosion-resistant jack is made for marine, recreational and utility trailers. Features aluminum alloy construction, adjustable mount and swivel system and twin-track wheels that roll independently to aid in maneuverability.

This is a great jack. My previous jack(rated to 1200lbs.) was bent after raising the back end of the boat trailer to replace broken leaf springs and that's why I ordered a heavier duty jack. I really like the piece that keeps the crank from rotating while trailering and the dual wheels make it much easier to push/reposition the boat while it's being stored inside. The previous jack was a weld on mount so the installation was more involved. I didn't go with another weld on jack because none of the available weld on type jacks matched the hole positions on the existing weld on plate and I didn't want to deal with getting a welder to install/weld a new plate to the trailer frame. I ground off the plate from the trailer frame and smoothed the surface where the weld beads were. The u bolts that came with the new jack were too small to fit around the trailer frame so I drilled holes through the frame and was able to easily mount the jack with the u bolts provided. The jack works like a charm and looks great too. It was an excellent choice.

The jack has performed excellently since I installed it. I am very pleased with it and it just feels so much sturdier than the original jack. The extra cost to purchase a heavier duty jack wasnt a whole lot more and I really like the confidence it gives me knowing it is stronger. It also cranks smoother with less effort. Couldnt be happier with my purchase. Thanks Rachael.

Great purchase! Very happy , strong so far and definitely goes up straight no lean , my boat is a 24 grady white, eith fuel vlose to 8000, jacks no problem, i put the boat off the trailer in winter and this jack did its job no problem! U wont be disappointed

Very disappointed. The wheels would not roll or rotate. Immediately took it off. And expensive piece of scrap metal.

Sorry to hear this Charles. This type of trailer jackmeaning the double wheels needs to be mounted so that equal pressure is on both wheels. If one side gets more than the other it can cause issues like binding up or not wanting to roll. Also I would make sure that the trailer is loaded properly and you dont have to much weight on the tongue.

The trailer jack f2 arrived in perfect shape at a very competitive price. The quality of the product was surpassed only by the fabulous customer service. I teach sales training and customer training and I have a new example of excellent customer service to present to my classes. More purchases to follow. The jack is installed on an all aluminum diamond plate show trailer for my Canam Spyder F3 trailer. The style of the all aluminum jack compliments the trailer.

It’s working fabulously. Best feature is the locking wheel which really stops the trailer without a chock. Classy appearance compliments my all aluminum trailer

High quality and easy install. I use it for my 26’ enclosed trailer. It’s a winner!

This Jack was on my Tricker Trailer when new. Broke the gear inside and replaced it with a cheaper jack..... you get what you pay for. Looks good, works good and now that I found I can order parts as needed. Etrailer has great Customer assisantant and follow up was exceptional.

Easy install! Supports trailer while rolling! Works great!

Awesome customer service!

Wow. I cringed on the price but what a great tongue wheel. The double wheels roll very smooth and it looks on my custom trailer

I haven’t put your trailer jack on my boat trailer yet, but I know you have an awesome product compared to the cheapy ones I’ve been using in the past

Overall a very good product so far. I have only used it for a little under a year, but have had no mechanical issues with it. The crank works well, the wheels roll ok for holding up a 23' fiberglass Hurricane. The only minor design change that I would make would be to the placement of the unlocking pin. Being that it is tight to the inside of the trailer tongue makes it harder to grab and can become a knuckle scraper.

I installed this jack on a 22' boat trailer due to having 2 previously installed jacks fail. No such problems with this jack. It really is heavy duty. I can now maneuver the boat tongue around without the jack collapsing. Great product and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

OK, so its been a year now with the Fulton Jack and I still think it is the best one I have ever owned.

Fast shipping and great service. Thank you!

I've used Fulton trailer jacks for over 40 years. The F2 1600 lbs rated jack is the finest one they've designed to date. It lifted my trailer with a 3 ton boat with ease. It does jack up and lower faster than my old Fulton. I'm very pleased with this one, plus it was offered by at a much more reasonable price than West Marine.

I bought two of these Great trailer jacks and both boats couldnt be happier. Good construction. Jacking is faster than my old ones. Couldnt be more pleased. Thank you for offering a good quality product. And better price the West Martine.
Mako 2 - 06/11/2016

What a great jack! Smooth operation and lots of inquiries as to where I purchased it. Thanks to my wife, I am the only one at the boat ramp, but that will probably change soon!

just received my trailer winch and jack. outside temperature was -1o F this am so no chance to mount or use yet but wanted to say how please with prompt service and delivery
Will use again

Both winch and jack performed as expected with issues and easy to install.

Fulton F2 jack and F2 winch Came today! on trailer and ready to go to the river on Wednesday. Easy to assemble A Big Thanks to George at E-trailer, will order again. Thanks Dave.

Right now it's too cold to work on the trailer, January in NY. This is my second order with etrailer and ther were no problems I got what I ordered on time and have no qualms recommending them.
Thank You

Everything is working well. The parts were used on a Trailor for my smoker.
Tore - 01/08/2019

Best trailer jack for salt water use I ever bought! And I have bought plenty! Until this one, most other brands rust out and lock in a little as a year. This one is worth the money! Only thing I wish the plastic wheels would be a little bit more robust.
George from etrailer is awesome when it comes to customer service and ensuring customer satisfaction. etrailer exceeded my expectations. THANK YOU George!

Excellent trailer jack. Dual wheels lock to prevent movement. Square lift tube prevents wheels from spinning when not in contact with ground. Swing mechanism works well. Very heavy duty construction. Handle is plastic but must be lexan or something similar because it's incredibly strong. Worth every dollar.

They kept me informed on this part that was on back order . They also sent emails on items available in case I wasn’t willing to wait, this was helpful. When the part was on its way they promptly informed me of the shipment and ETA of that item.
This was the kind of information anyone making a purchase would want…they did a fantastic job

I have 7 trailers and this jack is the most adaptable to any application that it may be used for. The bolt-on F2 jack is adaptable to either a 3" or 4" frame also has a vertical adjustment to get the most out of jack travel. It appears to be marine grade, I am using it on my 25' pontoon boat trailer. It has a easy locking wheel piece that keeps the easy rolling dual wheels from moving. It is one of the best engineered jacks on the market I feel.

I just installed this tongue jack on my snowmobile trailer. It is definitely a well engineered burly product - heavier than I expected. The installation was straight forward with no surprises. Everything need was provided. The trailer is in storage until next season, so I can't offer any further information at this time. I will probably buy another one for my boat trailer. These are absolutely better than the cheap light weight jacks on most trailers.

Just got the trailer jack, fast service and shipping. Haven't got it mounted yet.

Still a great product, thanks
Robby - 03/05/2018

I bought it because I needed to have a low mount and this one is adjustable. It bolted on fine but as for operation I have a few concerns. The locking pin does not snap into place when you rotate it to the locking position. You have to wiggle the lock pin and assembly at the same time to get it to lock. The double wheel does not swivel into the right direction like a caster should. You have to kick it into the direction first. Otherwise it looks like it is well constructed just lousy operation.

  • Can the Fulton F2 Swing-Up Trailer Jack Be Mounted to an I-Beam Aluminum Boat Trailer
First, the closer you get to the axle on the trailer, the heavier that part of the trailer is going to be. That is important because where you mount the jack could determine if it is over or under capacity. You would need to box out the frame so that it is square or rectangle and not an I so the jack can be safely attached. Usually to do this, you would weld on a couple of steel plates. However, welding to aluminum is tricky and requires a very skilled welder with experience. This is probably...

  • Troubleshooting Fulton F2 Trailer Jack with Dual Wheels that Will Not Roll Straight
There's a few things that could be going on here. The most likely is that you need some weight on the trailer. With the dual wheels when the trailer is being moved the wheels have such a tight connection to the tube that it only takes an extremely slight bump in the road to disrupt them. Weight on the trailer will prevent this because the downward force keeps the wheels on the ground. Another possibility is the mounting of the jack. If the plate is not 100 percent vertical (which isn't...

I don't see this being a problem at all. As you can see in the video the Fulton Jack part # F1413020134 below it mounts to the outside of the frame and the handle is a long way from any part of the trailer. They may be talking about the swing up release being pretty tight to the trailer as seen in the photo below. That release is fixed however so there again wouldn't be any issue with ramming your hand into the trailer.
