Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Subaru Ascent

Today on our 2019 Subaru Ascent, we're gonna be installing Draw-Tite's class three, two inch trailer hitch receiver. And this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. Now you might be asking yourself, "Well, I don't see any hitch"Well, that's because it's hidden behind the panel right here in the center. So whenever you want to use it, simply pull that off, and you're ready to hook up and go. When you're not using it, the panel simply slides back in, pushes in place, and no one is the wiser you have a hitch installed. This is a class three, two inch by two inch receiver, so it's gonna be great for all of your towing needs. From bike racks, to cargo carriers, to trailers, it's gonna handle just about everything. It uses a 5/8 inch hitch pinning clip. Now one doesn't come with the hitch, but you can pick one up here at etrailer.com.And, just here, to the rear of the hole, you're gonna see another smaller hole, and this is for a J pin.

A J pin works similarly to your hitch pin except it curves around and part of it goes inside this little hole here and presses against whatever is in the receiver. This keeps everything nice and tight and acts as an anti-rattle device. It features plate style safety chain loops. These are gonna be at the top, and they do have a fairly large opening, so it should accommodate just about every shape and style of safety chain. The hitch features a 750 lb tongue weight, that's the force going down on top of the receiver, and a 5000 lb gross towing capacity. And that's how much it can pull behind it.If you're using a weight distribution system with this hitch, the measurements stay the same. You do want to verify in your vehicles owners manual to ensure you don't exceed any of its towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories.

From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube it measures about 24 inches. This is important when determining if you need to drop, rise, or raise shank in any of your accessories. And from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it measures about 2 1/2 inches. This is important when determining if any of your folding accessories can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle with our lift gate open. We're gonna remove both the plastic trim panels here, just to the side of our taillight assemblies. Those remove easily by putting your fingers up at the top here, and just pulling outward. We'll remover the bolt that's located at the bottom, below that panel we just removed. We're gonna use a 10mm socket.

There's one on the other side that we need to remove as well.At the top of your wheel well, on both sides your gonna find a pin there we need to remove. Use a screwdriver to push in the center of the pin, once you've pushed the center in, the pin can now be released. So we're gonna use a flat bladed screwdriver to get behind it, and pull it out. We'll do that on the other side as well.Next we'll need to remove the pins from the bottom of our fascia. There's some that run all the way across, you're gonna have two on each side.

Take those out first. We use our flat bladed screwdriver to pop out the center first, and then the rest you can just pull out.On the bottom center of our fascia you're gonna have four push pins to remove, two on each side of your spare tire. These are removed exactly the same way. We're now ready to remove our fascia, you'll want to start at one corner, pull outward releasing the tabs, work your way around, and once you get to the center in the back here, this is where I like to stop and go to the other side and release that side. You can then come here to the middle, and finish releasing it. Once you've got it released, you want to check for any electrical connectors that may be present. We've got one here. So, you'll want to press the release tab, and pull outward. We'll now set our fascia aside where it won't get damaged. We'll now make sure to remove any wirings connected to our bumper being here, so you can use a trim panel tool, flat bladed screwdriver. If you don't have a trim panel tool, I like to use a pair of side cutters, because a flat bladed screwdriver's a little clunky. So what you can do is get underneath of it, and just pop it up. You don't want to cut it, you're just using those side cutters to help pry it off.And we're gonna get the one on the other side as well, you want to make sure you check all the way around because depending on the options that come with your vehicle, you may have more or less connectors than we have here. We'll now remove our bumper beam. There's three bolts and one nut on each side. We're gonna remove those with 17mm socket.I actually like to leave the nut just a little bit on there so when I take the other side off it'll hold it on, preventing it from falling. Now with them all loose, support your bumper beam, remove those two nuts you we're using as safety nuts just to keep it from falling, we will be reusing the nuts, but not the bolts. We can now set this off, and set it aside as we won't be reinstalling it. We'll now take our hitch, we're gonna slide it over the studs where our bumper beam was, and then use the factory nuts we removed to keep those in place. We'll now take the bolts that come in our kit, we're gonna place a conical tooth washer on 'em with the teeth facing away from the head of the bolt, and we're gonna thread those into the factory well nuts on our vehicle. There'll be three of these on each side. We'll again take a 17mm socket, and tighten down all of our hardware. We can then go back and torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions. We can now put our wiring back in place using the holes that are open on the top of our hitch here, just push those in. And do the other side as well.We can now put our fascia back on. In the reverse order of how we took it off. Make sure you plug your electrical connector back in before snapping it back on.After you reinstall your bolts, put your trim panels back up over 'em, and these just simply push back into place. In order to get your pins back in here, and keep them tight, you need push the center pin here out. Then you can put the pin in, and push it until it's flush. And that completes our installation of Draw-Tite's class three, two inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Subaru Ascent.

The hitch installed easily and fit well. It took me about an hour to install... Removing the bumper fascia wan't as intimidating as I though it would be, and it clicked back into place easier than expected. One note to keep as a back up... the torc on the 4 bolts that attached to the Ascent frame was a little much and it stripped one of the threads (I was using a torc wrench). There luckily was enough bolt purchase from the inside of the bumper to allow for a high-grade nut to be placed on it. I ended up snugging 4 more nuts on the others just in case. Very quick and easy installation without help if you watch the video (A must!)! Fits perfectly and doesn't require special panel tools or any cutting or breaking! Price is very reasonable and shipping was fast and free! If you have an Ascent with rear splash guards it's slightly more difficult because there is one more panel pin to pop out that is under the guard. I was able to get it by loosening one of the screws in the wheel well and just twisting the guard, then using a flat head screw driver to reach in and pop it out. Getting it back in was a little more difficult, but all in all, still far easier than the previous few hitches I've installed. Another note, like another review mentions, is that there are two tabs that slightly protrude. You can bend these back a little by hand, or just tighten the hitch and it will push them in. Mine arrived with a handful of chips out of the protective black paint coating, but I'm not too worried about it since it sits up high and is partially protected. 615358

Excellent value. Very easy to install once bumper/fender was removed, which wasn't difficult after watching video instructions for my particular car. Price was reasonable and better than competition. 611524

Shipment arrived in perfect condition. The instruction included were not as comprehensive as the online one so go with the online instructions. Install was easy less than 45 minutes and I was able to do it without a second set of hands. There are two angles on the car frame that protrude out preventing the hitch to sit flush, however as you tighten the bolts the hitch will push them inwards and eventually sit flush, from the looks of it the angles are light guage and can be bent back in place should you decide to remove the hitch. 595982

Got this hitch for my 2019 Subaru Ascent. It shouldn't have been listed as a 10/10 difficulty for install. I followed the excellent video by etrailer and got it done in about an hour. After installing at least 4 hitches myself in the past, I would say that this was probably the easiest job because of not having to crawl underneath and bench pressing the hitch up while trying to fish the bolt through. Great design for both the car and hitch! 654970

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches for 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring
  • The benefits of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76253 that fits your 2019 Subaru Ascent Touring are that it has a concealed crosstube and also that it has a 750 lb tongue weight, which is the highest capacity tongue weight for any hitch that fits your vehicle. That said, the tongue weight will not come into play when you are using your bike rack and it is unlikely to be a factor for a tent trailer. The Curt Trailer Hitch # C13400, which will also fit a Touring model of '19 Ascent, has...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for 2019 Subaru Ascent for Hitch Bike Rack
  • Between the Draw-Tite hitch # 76253 and the EcoHitch # 306-X7381 that both fit your 2019 Subaru Ascent if it were my money I would get the Draw-Tite. Both hitches will take about the same time for installation (2+ hours) but because the Draw-Tite has a much higher tongue weight (TW) rating of 750-lbs versus 500-lbs for the EcoHitch, and because it costs a good bit less, I would go that route. Tongue weight capacity is what matters most for using a bike rack. But if you prefer a USA-made...

  • 2019 Subaru Ascent 4-Way and Brake Controller Install Kit
  • Your 2019 Subaru Ascent should have came with a 7-way installed at the rear of it if it came with the factory towing package. Since you are having a hitch installed currently and looking at wiring you most likely do not have the towing package and would need to install the correct wiring. You have to start with a 4-way for this like the # 118790 as this will be the base for the 7-way conversion needed to install and use the brake controller. Since normally this 4-way kit stores in the rear...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2019 Subaru Ascent
  • Yes, for your 2019 Subaru Ascent the Draw Tite hitch part # 76253 is a confirmed fit and would work well for you. It is a 2 inch hitch which is the most popular size and has plenty of towing capacity at 7,500 lb trailer weight. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118790.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2019 Subaru Ascent and Should Weight Distribution be Used
  • If the manufacturer of the vehicles states that you can't use a weight distribution system then you should not use it. They designed the frame of the vehicle and are the authority on whether or not it could handle the additional stress of a the system. I'd recommend finding a trailer that is under the towing capacity of your 2019 Subaru Ascent and then installing the Draw Tite hitch part # 76253 you referenced which would give you a 2 inch hitch that fits behind the rear bumper panel. • Best Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2019 Subaru Ascent
  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76253 is the best option for your 2019 Subaru Ascent in my opinion. This 2 inch receiver has a hidden cross bar that allows you to have a very clean and factory look to your Ascent. This hitch itself is rated for up to 750 lbs tongue weight and 5,000 lbs towing so it is a heavy duty hitch. It will fit right behind the factory panel so you can simply remove the panel when you want to use it or trim that panel if you want it exposed....

  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76253 and the OEM Subaru Trailer Hitch Receiver L101SXC002 actually install using most of the same holes on the vehicle. I looked through the instructions you were referencing to confirm this. The OEM option is a three piece hitch which is why it looks like it installs differently but I can promise you that it replaces the bumper beam just like the Draw-Tite option, it's just rather hard to tell from the instructions. At this time (October 2018) we are still waiting on a hitch fit to be released for the 2019 Forester. • Yes, both the Draw-Tite hitch part # 76253 and EcoHitch part # 306-X7381 require removal of the impact structure. Since both the Draw-Tite and EcoHitch are concealed cross tube designs the impact structure must be removed to make room for the cross member of the hitch. Curt hitch part # C13400 for the 2019 Subaru Ascent does not require removal of the impact structure because it is installed below the bumper. You will need some additional items to tow your pop up camper. I took a look at the online version of your owner's manual and it states that your Ascent is only capable of towing a trailer up to 1,000 lbs if it doesn't have brakes.
