Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Toyota Highlander - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2013 Toyota Highlander, we'll be installing the Draw-tite Hitch, part number 75726. Before we begin our install, here's what the hitch looks like when it's installed on the vehicle. We'll next give you some measurements that will help you in selecting accessories such as a ball mount, bike rack or cargo carrier. The center of the hitch pin hole is even with the outermost edge of the rear bumper. From the top of the receiver tube to the ground will be 13 3/4 inches. Now we'll go ahead with our install. To begin our install, we'll first need to remove the lower body panels on each side. To remove each body panel, there are multiple fasteners.

We'll have some screw fasteners and push pin fasteners. To remove the push pin fasteners, we'll use a flat blade screw driver, pry out the center of the fastener and then remove it completely. Now with the fasteners removed, we can pull the panels down and set them aside. Note, on the driver's side, the panel will be removed and will not be re-installed in most cases. Here on the passenger side, we'll remove the panel, slightly modify it and we'll be able to re-install it after the hitch is in place. Next we'll remove the tow hooks.

There are two tow hooks, on on each frame rail. We'll remove both fasteners to remove the tow hook. With the panels and tow hooks out of the way, we can point out the attachment points. We'll have a total of nine attachment points, five here on the driver's side, all five will be weld nuts, built into the frame. Three of them will be here at the bottom of the frame rail.

The forward attachment point is currently covered up with a plug that we'll remove. To remove it, we'll just take our flat blade screw driver, get underneath the plug and remove it. There are two more attachment points on the outside of the frame rail. They both have plugs in them also that we'll need to remove. Now over time, these weld nuts can build up with rust, dust, dirt and debris, so we'll thoroughly clean them out before we attempt to install the new hardware. To clean them out, we're going to use a spray lubricant and a half inch nylon tube brush, part number 814092.

We'll thoroughly clean the threads out. Once we have the threads cleaned out we can take one of the new bolts, thread it into the weld nut to make sure they go nice and easily. With my first one cleaned out, I'll repeat the same process for the other two here on this side. We will not need to clean out the ones where we removed fasteners for our tow hook. Next, we'll move over to the passenger side. Our attachment points in the bottom of the frame are already uncovered as we'll be reusing the attachment points from our tow hook, however the two in the side of the frame, we'll need to remove the weld nut plugs. Once we remove the plug, we can clean out the threads and then we're ready to install our hitch. Our new hardware supplied with the install kit will be a 10 millimeter bolt and conical tooth washer. The teeth of the washer are going to face the hitch. We're now ready to install the hitch. We're going to take our hitch and feed up over the exhaust on the passenger side first, then bring the driver's side up to the frame. Once I have the driver's side in place, I can install one of the bolts into the weld nut to hold it in position. As we install our fasteners, we'll install each one finger tight until we have them all in place. Now with all our fasteners in place, we'll tighten them down. Once we have our fasteners tightened down, we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. With all our fasteners tightened down and torqued to specifications, we'll re-install the panel on the passenger side. Using a paint marker, we'll mark out the section that will need to be trimmed. Then using a rotary tool or a hand saw, we'll cut out this section. With our hitch secured and torqued to specifications and everything re-installed, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our Draw-tite Hitch, part number 75726 on our 2013 Toyota Highlander. .

I got my delivery in the mail the other day. Pretty fast too. So this morning I decided to tackle the install. I'm not exactly Mr. Goodwrench, but this isn't a job that requires mechanical knowledge. I watched the install video and then set down with my ratchet set and had at it. The hardest part of the install was getting the existing tow points off. The bolts were pretty well frozen. A quick blast with the brazing torch to heat them up and they came loose. The disassembly of the panels and tow points took a half hour or so. The hitch needed to be manhandled into place a bit though. It would have been easier with a lift and a second set of hands but I was working in my garage alone. A handy floor jack helped lift the hitch into place while the bolts when on. Maybe 15 -20 minutes total. Then shaving down the panels and installing them took another 25 minutes. So It took my amateur self an hour and fifteen minutes including putting my tools away. The hitch is well finished, and solid as can be. Also, the design is flawless. Every bolt hole lined up with precision. Toyota wanted $700ish for their hitch installed. This was a third that cost with free shipping. A second hand and this would have been on in less than an hour. Top notch craftsmanship, stellar engineering, and a great instructional video. Thanks. 174765

Bought the Draw-Tite trailer hits together with the Swagman XTC4 4-bike rack. Bought based on reviews on e-trailer and other sites that this is a sturdy and good-working combination for carrying 4 bikes. * Delivery: Fast (<5 days) * Packaging: Package had holes, which is not unusual as the box with the hitch has a lot of empty spaces. Others had same issue, but nothing to worry about. The hitch cannot really break easily and the hardware is safely stored in the 2inch receiver. * Installation: Very nice video instructions on etrailer. Installation really can use two people, but it's fairly easy with two people. Had some problems with one of the nine screws to bite although I did a try run before mounting the hitch. Worked after some minutes of wiggling the hitch so that the screw got the correct angle to bite. * Usage: Installed the day of delivery and used it the next day. It's the first time I used a trailer hitch and for sure the first time I used to carry 4 bikes. Stopped looking in the rear-view mirror after 1 minutes seeing that it's barely moving at all. So with a limited use so far I can confirm other's reviews of this combination and I think it works great. Recommended. 357848

My 13 year old son and I installed this in a little under two hours. Delivery was quick but the box was banged up. But who cares! It is a hitch. This hitch is solid and well built. Very nice finish. It is heavy and we had to use a box to help prop up my son's side during the install. I could barely lift my side for that matter but we figured it out. The installation video was spot on. We did have some rust in a couple of the bolt holes on the frame. I was glad we ordered the brush to help clean them out. Ended up having to use the wrench to drive one of the bolts through the rust so that we could then do the install. I have a another hitch on my other car and it started to rust nearly immediately. This is much higher quality and 1/2 the price. 433921

Absolutely love the trailer hitch that I purchased. It is in great shape compared to the POS [trailer rental location] one I put on my other car years ago. :. I did have one problem though.

2009 Toyota Highlander

Research has brought me to etrailer.com to find the best hitch for my vehicle. I own a 2009 toyota highlander which is the hybrid limited model. I choose this hitch particularly because of the added tongue weight. 750 or 500 lbs... you decide which is better. This hitch has extra mounting tabs, so it doesn't just mount to the bottom of the frame but also the sides of the frame. It took 2 days to receive and less time to install. 45 minutes with 2 people. Do note that if you have mud guards than they must come off. I didn't remove the tail pipe to install, just man handled the hitch over it. Also, there is a tab on the back side of the facia in front of the exaust tip that has to go under the hitch. The bolts included with the hitch were a different size than what the manual says. They aren't 17mmm, they are 16mm. Overall the install went well so don't be intimidated by it if your not mechanicly inclinded. The wiring was really easy to install and as you can see in the picture I ran it through a hole in the body. I cut a small slit in the grommet and gently pushed the small end through so that any water won't come through. Worked like a charm. This was an aawesome experience! 203137

2019 Toyota Highlander

I bought this to put on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport. It's a very nice, well built hitch. It fit perfectly, even with my full size, 19 inch, spare tire. The only complaint I had about it was the packaging. The box arrived via the brown truck and was torn at both ends by the edges of the hitch, which caused the hitch to have a few nicks and scratches to the paint. The delivery driver even apologized for it. I contacted etrailer.com via email. Their customer service was great, responding in just a few hours. We worked out a solution. This hitch is very well made. It's welded together and the bolt holes lined up perfectly with my Highlander's. It's heavy and awkward, so I do recommend two people to put it on. Installation was easy...my 13 year old nephew helped me. You could probably put it on by yourself, but two people make it easier as you have to lift it over the exhaust pipe. The video tutorial was definitely a plus! One thing I had to do that the video didn't show was to remove the cover on the tip of the exhaust pipe. I know not all models have one, but the sport models do. It's easy to remove by loosening the bolted on clamp. I didn't have to lift the rear of the Highlander up, either. There is plenty of room to get underneath the vehicle to work and do this (I'm a big guy). The hitch also has a plate welded onto it near the receiver so you can attach a mounting bracket for the wire harness if you want to run it to the outside of your vehicle. I used the mounting bracket (Item 18144) here: . It comes with locking screws and fits perfectly. Overall, this is a solid hitch that is priced well and looks great! I had thought about buying the OEM from Toyota, but I'm glad I didn't. This one is just as good (if not better) at only a quarter of the cost and I didn't have to pay anyone to install it. I will definitely be doing more business with etrailer.com! Great prices and customer service you can't beat! P.S. Sorry, but it was raining a little when I took the pics. 499583

Etrailer has everything one needs for most people to safely start towing by offering great products (hitches, wiring, draw bars, etc) as well as the information via document, video, and/or advisors to get the job done. I have purchased 2 trailer hitch receivers and wiring harnesses for my vehicles over the past few years and I have been very satisfied and I have saved money. I would definitely use etrailer again if I needed get towing with a different vehicle. 374429

Our trailer hitch has worked out well. We do not do really heavy duty towing with it but I very much appreciate being to find a product that I can manage to fit my needs and also allows me to manage to save some money.

Product works well for me towing trailers, holding bike rack, and holding large tray. One thing to consider ... mounting this under the bumper makes it a bit low, close to the ground. If you have any existing hitches to use with this receiver, you might need to convert them to raise up the ball higher. I have a bike rack I used on an older jeep where the hitch had a 2" drop, and this caused it to scrape on my driveway using this. That complaint is not specific to this product ... any similar product would have the same issue. Just be aware. Otherwise, I like the hitch, it installed pretty easily with the included directions, and after 1 year going through rain/snow/salt it only has some tiny rust ... I think it will last a long time with periodic cleaning. 674246

The bolts that come with the kit don’t fit the threads on the side mounts where you remove the plugs. 643843

Comments

The bolts should be M10-1.25 X 30, which is a 10mm diameter, 1.25 threads per mm by 30 mm long. If you didnt receive the correct bolts, please let us know. Well send you the correct ones right away.

I bought a hitch for a bike rack. I appreciated the fact that I could look up products for the specific year, make, and model of my car. Once I found hitches, the video explaining the three hitches that would fit my car helped me make my final decision as to which one to buy. I had the hitch installed by a teacher/students in the Auto Collision shop of the Tech school where I teach. The teacher said it was very easy to install and a good learning experience for the students. It looks great on my car. And the price was very reasonable compared to what the dealership quoted. Thank you etrailer.com! 641826

Excellent fit. I chose this Draw tite hitch because the reviews of the Curt brand model noted the bolt holes did not always line up. Also this one has the steel bar going above the muffler so it does not hang below it. I saw the excellent install videos by etrailer. I was able to install the hitch by myself using wood blocking at each end. The hitch came unscratched by UPS delivery. The order arrived 3 days after my web site order. I did have some difficulty removing the somewhat rusty 8 year old tow hooks prior starting this installation. 639538

Product installed great, but we haven’t actually used it yet, I highly recommend getting some spray paint, we chose flat black, to paint the device before you install it as there were some scratches on the hitch that exposed bare metal. We inquired with customer service about the damage, however this was their recommendation rather than replacing. Understandable as the cost of shipping for a few small scratches would be unreasonable. Great customer service!!! 615525

Worked out well. Good price & fast delivery. Very good quality. My problem was install. Overall instructions good, plus you can follow video or call customer svc for direct help. However, specific instructions for a 2013 Highlander vary. You have to cut plastic under panels for proper fit & instructions do not cover this very well. No pattern to follow. ( If you ever remove to sell/trade, you will have to replace the entire cover panel) just saying...other wise holding up well/ looks ok. This is my second hitch from ETrl & happy. As always, pls consider buying vehicle with hitch to begin with. 609400

I got the product extremely quick and installed it the day after I got it. I was supposed to get it on Thursday and received it on Tuesday. This is the 3rd trailer hitch I have bought from etrailer. I will continue to purchase from etrailer and I am very happy with their products. 585960

Received my hitch and wiring package very promptly. The installation video was very helpful. Installation was relatively easy, although the weight of the hitch makes it a little harder for a solo install. It can be done by one person, though. Fit was good, and the holes lined up well. The hitch looks good on the vehicle, and I am a satisfied customer. 573974

This hitch was as described and has become an essential accessory to our Highlander. We use it to tow utility trailer, small boat trailer, bicycle rack and extra luggage shelf. This hitch is not symmetrical, it has to go up and over the exhaust on one side, but I believe this hitch was very well engineered to fit this vehicle! Installation was easy for a mechanically inclined person, might be a challenge for someone not used to working with tools, but doable. Specifically, there is a small section of the plastic trim under the bumper that needs to be cut and trimmed in order for the hitch to fit in. You can be a perfectionist and make it look like it was done at the factory, or rough cut it. This cut is, after all, under the bumper and not terribly noticeable. 563235

installed with no issues took and hour and half, (had my morning coffee at the same time.) I little bit hard for one person but I managed, balanced on side on my knees once you get a bolt started it is a piece of cake to finish. now on to the wiring. I have the tow prep package so I should not have to install the converter. I was able to install the under body panels with minor trimming. 540939

Finally, the hitch mount is installed on my 2013 Toyota Highlander, you would need 10mm, 14mm, and 16mm, and 6" socket extender. In the manual, it said you need, 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm. Installation was easy, only 9 bolts, two persons makes job easier but i did the installation by myself. It took one hour or less. The hitch fits my vehicle steel frame bolts patterns perfectly so no issue with the install. 525806

Paint on hitch was damaged (scraped completely off to bare metal in places) upon arrival, box appeared to have been heavily damaged in transit and taped up. It was still pretty beat up with portions of the hitch protruding from the box when it arrived. Hitch fit well and installed easily with 2 people. The lateral plastic under carriage protectors must be modified to be reattached. The complete job took less than 2 hours on my 2013 Highlander. Despite the cosmetic damage all the parts were there, the installation went off without a hitch (no pun intended) and it functions well. I'm happy with it, go for it! 518041

It wasn't too difficult to install this on my 2009 Toyota Highlander Sport I had 2 issues: 1. I had to release the Exhaust screws and push the Exhaust down to fit it in. I probably would have to do it with any hitch that has Exhaust bridge from above . That was simple to do. 2. I wasn't happy that the screws delivered in the package where not galvanized. I prefer galvanized screw on car. Over all I did all the installation by myself in 2 - 3 hours with no help. The Drew-Tite Max-E-Loader is very good Hitch receiver. I really like the way it connects to the frame with weight distributions. I feel it is much better then the other hitch on my older Toyota highlander 2003 The build quality of this product is very good. 515325

After balking at the cost to have an auto-shop add a trailer to our Toyota Highlander, we found etrailer.com and decided to take a chance. The "how to" videos factored considerably in our decision to buy ... they made it look so easy! And surprise! It really -WAS- that easy. We used standard block-type ramps (the kind you can buy for $40 ) to get the SUV up off the ground high enough to get underneath to do the work. Everything came off as easy as it was showed in the videos. Other than the fact this bar is a heavy so we had our teen daughter help hold it steady while we bolted it into place (i.e., get help for when you go to lift it), it went super smooth. Thanks for saving us $280 over the cost the car dealer quoted us! P.S. - be sure to watch the linked videos so you get the right trailer lighting attachment and ball hitch for your new hitch. 510288

We are very happy with our trailer hitch, and all the accoutrements that we purchased with it. Your videos were enormously helpful, the hitch went on easily with a bit of help from our teenage daughter to lift it up into place, and we recommend your business to friends when they express an interest in getting a camper.

This is a nicely built hitch that fitted up to the car perfectly. My 16 year old grandson and I installed it in an hour with the car up on ramps and using only a few hand tools. Your installation video helped us know what we needed to do. I do have one complaint but it's about the packaging and shipping, not the hitch. The UPS gorillas easily overcame the packaging (wrapped in heavy plastic and taped) and ground the hitch down to bare steel in several locations. This happened to the last hitch I bought from etrailer also. The packaging and shipping department needs to find a way to protect these things from the brutes at UPS. I touched it up heavily with rustoleum but expect the hitch will start to rust in a few years. Sigh. Once a powder coated steel object starts to rust at a penetration in the coating, the rust spreads under the powder coat and then the coating falls off in sheets. That is what happened to the previous hitch, it still works great but is an ugly rusty mess after ten years on the back of the car. 498353

Comments

Update a year later. The hitch has worked nicely. Mostly we tow a little utility trailer but now and then a big rental or borrowed trailer gets hooked up. No hassles with any load. The areas where the UPS goons damaged the finish are indeed starting to rust. Sigh. etrailer needs to find a better way of shipping or else find a way to protect their merchandise from their chosen shipper. Half these reviews talk about how the UPS brutes easily overcame the etrailer packaging and damaged the powder coating. Also - several folks commented about needing to the exhaust pipe a bit - you can avoid that by just removing the shiney metal exhast tip. Without the cosmentic tip in place, the hitch slides over the exhaust pipe just fine. Then reinstall the shiny tip. Less effort than taking down the exhaust pipe, in my opinion. Nice product!

I got the hitch with wiring harness and all hardware. It bolted up perfectly and the installation video was exactly as it shows. The only problem I had is that the box did not protect the hitch very well. My hitch has some chips of paint gone and it is on the front of the hitch where it shows. 493916

I really like this hitch when I'm towing. Even though it's mounted on my Toyota Highlander, the ball isn't too low to the ground. The hitch provides excellent stability, and I was able to install it myself simply by watching etrailer's video on their website. But I really LOVE this hitch when I'm not towing. I'm a professional who often transports clients in my vehicle. I really love that the hitch is sleek and almost hidden when I'm not towing. 486480

This is all about shipping. As VP of Logistics for a $350mm company, shipping an oversized, overweight product via the "Brown Truck" is just asking for trouble. Sure enough, package was at my front door when I got home, delivery was timely. Closer inspection shows the shipping container has several large holes (larger than a man size fist) , taped up sections where its torn on both long side ends in a number of areas and the overall integrity of the container left the finish on the hitch scraped and chipped. in places. Not happy. 484863

There are a three things that really stood out for me. First, the installation instructions were easy to follow and involved little "trial and error". Although having three people guide the hitch into place for initial attachment is recommended. The wiring harness was easy-peasy! Second, I use this hitch mostly for pulling light loads around town, but, the week after installation I pulled a 12' tandem-wheel cargo trailer full of furniture over 800 miles through three mountain passes without a problem. Third, and more service related, the self-help tips on etrailer's website are invaluable. 478010

Very easy install. The directions and videos were an awesome help! My 2 young sons and I (more easily than I anticipated) simply lifted the hitch into place (after the prep) and bolted it in. Everything lined up exactly and threaded right into the factory-mounted nuts. Now... we're ready to tackle the wiring. 468445

This is not a review of the product but of Etrailers shipping. Ordered the hitch it arrived in a mangled box. The hitch tore the box up because the box was too light. Etrailer needed to use a heavy duty box to put it in but did not. Have not put the hitch on yet, just hope it didn't get bent because the box did nothing to help protect it during shipping. I am not happy about this. 450797

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Trailer Towing Setup for a 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited to Tow 2 Jet Skis
  • For your 2012 Toyota Highlander Limited, you'll need a hitch, the wiring, a brake controller and an anti-sway system. Based on my research, it looks like Toyota recommends both a braking and a sway control device on a trailer at this weight on your vehicle. Prior to installing a hitch and towing a trailer, you'll want to verify your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and tongue weight rating (TWR) on the sticker inside the driver's side door jamb to ensure that you are aware...

  • Tow Package Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Highlander
  • We have everything that you need to set up your 2011 Toyota Highlander for towing. First, if you don't already have a trailer hitch, I recommend installing the Draw-Tite Max Frame Class III Trailer Hitch # 75726 because it has more than enough capacity for your vehicle and it is rated for use with a weight distribution system if necessary. Next, if you don't already have a tail light wiring harness with a 4-pin connector like part # 118449, then you will want to install this item as...

  • How to Determine if a 2013 Toyota Highlander Limited Can Tow a Trailer with a 5,250 lb GVWR
  • If you have a 5,000 lb trailer towing weight capacity for your 2013 Toyota Highlander Limited and you will not be filling your tanks before traveling then you should be okay. The difference between your dry trailer weight and the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is 2,685 lbs. Since the GVWR is the max weight that your 2007 Fleetwood Pegasus Ultralite can weigh that means you have to take a lot of cargo with you. Be sure to check your owner's manual to ensure that you do have a trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Toyota Highlander
  • All of the available trailer hitches for a 2011 Toyota Highlander (see link) will have a cross tube that will be visible beneath the rear fascia of the vehicle. There is currently no after market design that has the cross tube hidden and the receiver through a cut out in the rear fascia. It is possible that Toyota has a hitch that installs in this manner but none of the manufacturers we carry have an option like this. If you decide to go with the Draw-Tite hitch # 75726, and plan to...

  • Recommendation And Installation Of Trailer Hitch For 2011 Toyota Highlander
  • The Curt Hitch that is designed to fit your Highlander is part # 13534. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. Hitches can at times suffer a little when being shipped but typically result in being a minor problem. Most of the problems are the mounting brackets on the hitch do not line up with the holes on the vehicle frame. Our installers use a 'cheater bar' that looks like a long tapered screwdriver with no blade on the end. They place the bar in one hole to...

  • Installing 7-way Blade Trailer Connector on 2013 Toyota Highlander
  • To wire your 2013 Highlander with a 7-way and 4 pole connector, you'd first need a functional 4-pole trailer connector. If your Highlander doesn't already have one, you can install it using part # 118449. With the 4-pole in place, there's two different alternatives, depending on if your trailer with the 7-way has brakes. If it does NOT, you can use the Hopkins # 37185 (same as the 47185 you mentioned). The 37185 would plug directly into the 4-pole, with 4 remaining wires. The white wire...

DrawTite part # 75726 is a hitch for your Highlander that does include a mounting location for the trailer connector braceket, and this hitch also mounts above your passenger side exhaust. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2011 Toyota Highlander that Allows Use of Full Size Spare
  • For your 2011 Toyota Highlander, the Draw Tite hitch part # 75726 that you referenced will be your best option. It allows you to keep your full sized spare and it does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. I attached an install video. For trailer wiring you then would want the part # 118449 which is a confirmed fit. This harness stows inside the rear hatch area of the vehicle so a mounting bracket would not be needed.
