Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Jeep Compass - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2016 Jeep Compass, we're going to be taking a look at and also showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver offering the 2" by 2" opening. Its part number is 75712. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on the vehicle. It gives us a really clean look. We've got our crosstube that's going to be completely hidden behind our rear fascia here. See our receiver tube, it's going to come out to the 2" by 2" opening.

Nice rounded reinforcement collar around the end there. You're going to do a minor trim on the panel itself here to allow that receiver tube to fit in there. Not a big deal, pretty easy to do. You'll see for safety chain connection points we've got a rounded steel stock-style connection. Plenty of room there on each side to get chains connected.

For attaching our accessories we want to use the larger pinhole that's closer to the front of the vehicle. It's 5/8" in diameter. Class three accessories are we want to use to secure our items. We should have plenty of room to use just about any type that we'd want, whether it's a locking hitch pin, regular hitch pin, or anti-rattle device. The second smaller pinhole will come in play when you use the j-pin stabilization system.

It's just one of many stabilizers out there. Now the hitch is going to offer us a 525 pound tongue weight rating. That will be the maximum downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening. It gives us a 3,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's the total weight of our trailer and anything that we might load up on it. Of course we do want to check our owners manual.

We want to see what the Compass is rated for, and we can go off of whichever of those numbers are the lowest. The hitch is not rated for use with weight distribution. Now a few measurements that are going to be helpful in selecting your ball mounts, bike racks, or hitch cargo carriers will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we've got about 15-1/4". Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 6. Now to begin our installation we need to get an area cut out here on the rear fascia. As you can see, there was a hitch previously installed. It was a class two hitch. Customers decided to upgrade to a class three. With the particular class three we're using, we'll have to enlarge this slightly. Now if you're starting from square one, it's really easy to set it up. We measure from this push fastener to this push fastener. Outside to outside, it's 14". We want to mark the center at 7". Then from that center mark, you measure out each way 1-3/8". Make your mark. That's going to be your outside lines. Now for this particular installation we need to measure up about 3-1/2". You can see where that's going to hit, about right there. We're going to use a dry erase marker, get that marked on both sides. Get that there. Now at this point you would just trim up. I like to use the aviation shears or our sheet metal shears, because this stuff cuts really easily. You just want to cut up, follow that line all the way up. Then we'll want to cut straight across our line there. Then just look it over, square it up if you need to. You can see my line . I need to trim that little corner off. Now we've got our whole cut out here. It's time to lower this exhaust down to give us a little bit of room to work. I like to use a strap just to give it some support here. That way it's just not resting on the hangers up front. Then we've got two hangers to remove. One's going to be right up here on this front corner on the driver side. Then it's going to be at the rear corner up here on the passenger side. It's a good idea to hit it with a little bit of spray lubricant. That will generally make it fairly easy to slide off just by using a pry bar, going in from that backside just like that. Same thing on the passenger side here. Now I'm going to let a little slack out of my strap and allow that to come down just slightly. Now we're going to grab a ratchet and a 10mm socket. We need to remove the four nuts holding our heat shield in place. We've got one, two, three, and then right up here is the fourth. Now in each of our frame rails, like this is our passenger side tire, if we come just inside our frame rail runs along. This is that exhaust hanger we separated. Right behind that you can see two holes that come through our frame. We're going to take one of our bolts and we want to place it through each of those holes. Then we're going to press it back until it's flush. We're going to do that for all four attachment points. We're going to have two on each side. They're going to be in the exact same location. Now we'll get our hitch raised up into position. Start our driver side there and then work it in. If we pull down on that exhaust a little bit, it will slide over the top. Now we want to move it up and back to line up the holes with our sides plates. Once we have the side plates line up with our bolts, just going to push those through. now for our forward attachment point we need to place on one of the conical tooth washers. We want the teeth to face toward our hitch. We're going to thread on one of the hex nuts. For the rear mounting location we need to slide on one of the split ring lock washers and then follow that up with a hex nut. We'll do the same thing over there on the driver side. Now we'll want to snug down our hardware. To do that we're going to be using a 22m socket and wrench. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench. We want to look in the instructions. There we're going to find the torque specifications. We need to get all of our fasteners torqued down appropriately. Now we'll slide our heat shield back up into position. We're just going to resecure it with the nuts we removed earlier. Now we're ready to get the exhaust put back up into position. These hangers should just slide on by hand. If they give you any trouble, just hit them with a little more spray lubricant. There we go, nice and secure. You can see it's not hitting anything. It's always a good idea to check that. Now we'll pull our strap down and ready to start using that hitch. That's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite custom fit class three trailer hitch receiver, part number 75712, on our 2016 Jeep Compass.

Ive had it on for a year now. I haven't towed anything but I have used it with a rack. It carried about 250lbs for about 10 hrs no problem. It doesn't show any sign of rust. I had to cut the bumper to install. If I had to buy again I would probably buy this same model. 716973

This hitch wasn't quite as easy to install as in the video without the car up on a rack. The video was helpful. The hitch requires some jockeying around to get both bolts to go in. I used a couple of jacks to make it happen. The brackets were a little narrow for my 2014 Jeep Compass so I used a few 1/8 inch washers on one side to avoid stressing the welds too much on tightening. In the end the install came out good and the hitch seems solid. 563575

Ive been using the hitch to attach a bike carrier. It has worked great for that and seems very strong.

I received my trailer hitch for my 2014 Jeep Patriot very fast and it arrived in great condition. The 2014 Jeep Patriot video on your web site was fantastic! It was clear and easy to follow. I did everything shown in the video in the order presented and everything went together just fine with absolutely no surprises. One thing to keep in mind is that a second person is a must when installing the hitch up against the frame rails (impossible for one person to do) but my obliging wife was nearby so she was able to hold up the drivers side of the hitch while I fitted the passenger side and in just a couple minutes I had my bolts in and was able to take over the other side from my wife, all that was left to do was to tighten and torque things up, it was really just that easy, and in the end it looks as good as the installation in the video. 397810

Product was well made for the most part. The tabs were about 3/8" short on fitting rail to rail on a 2017 Jeep Patriot. What concerned me the most was the trim ring around the tube end was COVERED in weld splatter as is the bottom of the tube. It was totally wrapped in plastic so I didn't see it till I was installing it. By then I had to have it for the next day. Otherwise I most certainly would have returned it. While this doesn't compromise the strength ... it looks bad for a new hitch. Very disappointed. 548541

The hitch arrived in a nice box that has hand holes in it for easy handling. The hitch could use some sort of dense foam padding inside the box, especially on the flange tabs that attach to the car frame, as the shipper was less than careful and those we're sticking out of the box. The bag containing the parts was ripped and there were 2 loose washers floating around in the box (luckily they didn't fall out of the holes). The instructions were easy enough to follow, although there need to be some corrections/additions made to them. First is the depth dimension for the cutout in the rear fascia, as it wasn't even close, instead of 2" it turned out to be 4 1/2" up from the bottom. Second would be the addition of the socket/wrench size needed to tighten down the nuts and bolts, as the only place I saw that was in the reference video and you had to be watching closely because they don't mention the size in the video. I only bring this up because a lot of socket sets don't have a 7/8" socket or wrench (like mine) and you will have to make a trip to buy one (like me). It is very helpful to have someone help you get the hitch into position to finish the installation. Overall the hitch is a good bargain, well made and very sturdy, I would definitely recommend it. 134653

Great instructions. Recommend watching the video as it adds more to the "how to" than just the print. If you have a 2017 Patriot Sport, the bumpr wraps farther under than the video shows and you will need to cut away more material to get the hitch in place. If you have the factory tow hook and want to re-use it, find a machine shop to drill the holes out to 5/8". Don't waste your time or money on drill bits. This thing is HARD. My machine shop had to sharpen his bit 3 times just to complete the 2 holes. I went through 4 bits and didn't even begin to drill it out. Also be aware that the clip that the bumper bolt goes into for the hook is only set in place and will want to come out inside the frame. It is a pain in the butt to get back in place. Hitch fit great, was actually alittle "loose" making it easy to fit between the frame rails. However, it came right over when the bolts were tightened. Wiring harness is great item. Really plug and play. Other reviews say not enough zip ties. I had a bunch left over. You can run the wire through the frame for a long strech. Be surte to use the "flat" holes as there are a couple with an upward lip that would rub on the wire. Highly recommend this set up. 481944

Jeep Liberty

Bought the 2” receiver to mount bike carrier and hitch tray that I use to transport garbage cans. (Liberty can only tow 1,000 lbs) so a class III is overkill. Hitch fit really well and the video from eTrailer was very helpful and described the process extremely well. The one thing lacking in the written description and video was the height dimension of the cut out of the valance for the receiver. This resulted in trial and error and added significant time for installation. A template for the cut out would make the fitting and installation WAY easier. Overall 8/10. Provide the template and it would be a 10/10. 514724

Comments
The installation instructions indicate the measurements needed for install on a 2011 and later Jeep Patriot. For this vehicle trimming the fascia is about 3 inches wide, and 5 inches subtracted from the height of the vehicle frame to the ground.

1999 Jeep Patriot

Etrailer is Top Shelf! My hitch with harness delivered in 2 days for free. Installation was another story. The hitch wasnt the problem, it was the Tow hook on the Patriot. That hardness on that hook had to be a Rockwell 99. Lol. It dulled the hss drill so i took out a carbide bur tool. After an hour of cutting and grinding i had reemed the holes just large enough for the bolts to go through. Then i went back to installing the hitch. The bolts were fully threaded. They only need to be threaded the last inch or so. The next day i ran the Hot wire all the way back to the taillights wire tying it to the brake lines. Completing the rest of the connections was simple. I extended the ground wire. Off the control box the black wire was used for the + lead (instructions said Red wire, is there no parity in instructions)to the battery. All connections were soldered and shrink wrapped.wire tyed the rest. Tested the brakes/turn sigs and running lights on the trailer. Off to the lake with the sea kayaks. Thanks again for the speedy delivery. etrailer Rocks! 386633

Package arrived way earlier than expected! All hardware, and materials were there, and in tact. I put this on my 2016 Jeep Patriot, and it fit perfectly. I mostly installed this hitch to use with my Thule bike rack, and occasionally pull a small motorcycle trailer. **NOTE : Those of you Patriot owners who wish to keep your factory rear tow hook on the driver's side: You must remove this hook to install, however you can reinstall the hook with the hitch, but you must press out the factory bolts in the hook ( they are press fit into the hook itself) , and drill out their holes to 5/8" to accept the larger/ load bearing bolts that come with the hitch. Not a chore, or big deal at all, just letting everyone know ahead of time for driveway installs like mine. Great hitch, and happy purchase! 268699

2014 Jeep Patriot

The one sheet install directions were wanting . The hitch fit well once we figured out to get it up. On the driver's side the Patriot has a plastic box that makes it hard to set the hitch. We found the bumper needed to be cut before the hitch could get in back of this box (some type of converter). We set the forward bolt on the right side of the hitch. This allowed us the line up the receiver on the bumper and we scribbed a mark on both sides. We cut the slot out with a soldering iron (pictured) and later a multi tool. After the slot was in we could tilt the hitch up which allowed us get the driver's side behind the plastic box. Again setting the forward bolt first. Then it was just a matter getting the rear bolts lined up. (A better description on marking the slot would have helped.) We continued to trim the slot with the multi tool until we could line up the bolts with the hitch. We did drop the muffer which was easy enough. It's odd the Jeep would have holes to receive a hitch and not have socket the wiring to plug in the wiring for the trailer. The wiring took as long as the hitch. (No fault of E-Trailer) 524891

The hitch came well packaged, and on time. Shipping was faster than the same product from that big box website named after the river! I watched the video from etrailer.com and it helped immensely. I had to trim the heat shield a bit that wasn't in the video but it took about 30sec with a pair of tin snips. Everything else was just like the video explained. Total installation time was about 2hrs. I really appreciate the way the hitch sits so that it doesn't lessen ground clearance, which was a concern for me. Emails from etrailer.com were Johnny on the spot. I'll definitely be doing business with them and recommending them to friends. 671696

Only had ONE issue; On the passenger side I had to machine up 2) 1/2 inch thick spacers 1 1/4" OD, 14 mm ID to properly accommodate the mount bolt gap between the hitch and the frame . I see where others stacked a bunch of washers etc. but I'm able to make the proper spacers and fumbling in this area to stack washers was not a viable option. Also, I added two thick washers under the head of each bolt, I feel these should be included to help stabilize/spread load from the bolt head to the sheet metal "frame". Recommend lock-tite on the nuts for peace of mind. Using this for a hitch mounted motorcycle rack only, no towing anticipated with this vehicle but its available. Please note the 525 lb. rated Draw-Tite unit seems to be (by pictures on website) constructed of heavier gauge material than the other competitor that has a 400 (?) lb. rating. Why not just buy a better, heavier duty hitch for the same $$? No reason to skimp in this area. 671909

  • Trailer Hitch, Brake Controller, and Wiring Recommendation for 2017 Jeep Patriot
First you'll want to start with the Draw Tite Hitch part # 75712 which is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Jeep Patriot and would work well. I attached an install video for this for you to check out too. It's a 2 inch hitch which will have higher towing capacities. You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118552. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will...

We haven't had a chance to install Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75712 on a 2014 Jeep Patriot but the measurement should be around 6-1/2 inches like on the 2011 model in the video I have linked to the right. We have installed Curt hitch # C13081 on a 2014 Patriot and it measured 6-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole back to clear the rear bumper. I have linked the video for this hitch as well. If you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for 2008 Jeep Compass
For trailer wiring for your 2008 Jeep Compass you'd want the Tekonsha kit part # 118428 which is a confirmed fit. This is designed to attach to your separate turn signals and combine them so that it can control the standard trailer wiring setup which is combined. Basically if you plan to tow a trailer with a 4-way it would have combined signals like what this kit is designed to work with.

  • Solution for Installing Hitch on 2017 Jeep Patriot that Seems Slightly Too Short
Sometimes the mounting flanges of trailer hitches like the Draw Tite part # 75712 that you have can bend in shipping. Your friend is right and you can keep torquing the hitch down and it will be fine. As long as you don't see any paint flaking or metal creasing the hitch is fine.

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2016 Jeep Patriot with a 500lb Capacity Cargo Carrier
You are correct, I would not recommend the Curt hitch # C13081 because it has a tongue weight capacity of below 500lbs. If you plan on fully loading your cargo carrier to the limit you will want to go with the Draw-Tite # 75712 because of the higher tongue weight rating. Now it's important to calculate the weight of your carrier into the tongue weight capacity as well as the cargo to be sure you don't go over capacity. Another very important thing to check is your owners manual because...

  • Best Way Carry Dirt Bike With 2008 Jeep Compass
Although the Draw-Tite Class III # 75712 has a 525 lb tongue weight capacity, the capabilities of the hitch will be limited by the capabilities of the vehicle its installed on. If the vehicle manufacturers stated tongue weight capacity is lower than that of the hitch, you will need to abide by the lower rating. I cannot recommend exceeding Jeep's stated tongue weight capacity, as exceeding it could cause the attachment points between the vehicle and the hitch to fail. A better solution...

  • Max Tongue Weight For 2016 Compass Latitude
Depending on your engine and transmission package per page 439 of the owners manual, the maximum tongue weight is 150-300lbs. Specifically the 2.4L Auto/Man with Trailer Tow Prep Package (AHC) and 2.4L Auto With Freedom Drive II Off Road Package (AWL) models have a 300lb maximum tongue weight and could narrowly accommodate what you're trying to accomplish here but otherwise the mobility carrier is not going to be an option. We generally see many customers use those carriers on full...

  • Towing Capacity and Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with 2016 Jeep Compass 2.4L
With the 2.4L you could have the Trailer Tow package or the Off Road package which makes your towing capacity 2,000 pounds according to what I've found. If you don't have either of those packages then you're limited to only 1,000 pounds. The parts I recommend for your Jeep are the Draw-Tite hitch, part # 75712, and Tekonsha wiring harness, part # 118539. The hitch has the highest capacity among the selection that fits your Compass so you'll get the strongest available and this wiring...

  • Trailer Hitch Compatibility with 2014 Jeep Patriot
We offer several hitch options for the 2014 Jeep Patriot, all shown on the linked page, that install with certain requirements. These installation requirements may include some trimming of plastic fascia parts, temporary removal of the exhaust heat shield and/or tow hooks, and temporary lowering of the exhaust, just to provide easier access to the mounting points on the frame. I have never heard of a hitch installation on a standard passenger vehicle being affected by the location of...

  • Fit and Compatibility of 2 Inch Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Jeep Compass Equipped w/1-1/4 Factory Hitch
I have good news for you! You are correct the 2 inch trailer hitch will use the factory already drilled bolt holes on your 2014 Jeep Compass to install the hitch. I highly recommend the Draw-Tite # 75712, because you will not need to use a support strap # 18050 with any non-trailer load like you will with the Curt hitch. It's important to note that you will need to remove the 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch before you can install the 2 inch hitch. Also the manufacture does require fascia...

  • Why Do Some Trailer Hitches Not Want to Fit Perfectly to Vehicle
Typically the fit issues you described aren't actually problems with the hitch design. More often than not the issue is that the hitch go bent in shipping and would need to be bent back to fit the correct original spec. Or on some vehicles we have found that the vehicle itself just has some variation in the dimensions the rear structure. 99% of the time though the issue is just a hitch bent in shipping that needs to just be bent back. As long as you don't see any creasing, paint flaking...

This Class III hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and has a 3,500 pound towing weight capacity. I also recommend checking the towing capacity of the Jeep itself, as this will likely be the limiting factor. This information can be found in your copy of the vehicle's owner's manual. Then you will need to drill out the holes to 5/8 of an inch. Use the hardware that comes with the hitch to attach the tow hook to the outside of the driver side frame. • What Does Lowest-Rated Component Mean for 2016 Jeep Compass
Put simply, the lowest-rated component for towing with your 2016 Jeep Compass means whatever is rated lower - the Jeep itself or the equipment you are towing with. For example, the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75712 is rated for 3,500 lbs towing and 525 lbs tongue weight.
