Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2009 Ford Taurus X

Today we are going to be working on a 2009 Ford Taurus X. We will be installing Curt hitch part number 75299. Here are a couple of measurements that will assist you when ing accessories for your new hitch, such as a draw bar, bike rack or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most point of the bumper is 3 inches. And from the top of the receiver tube to the ground is 14-1/2 inches. Now let us go ahead with the installation. 0:28

Our first step is going to be to remove the two existing fasteners that hold on the metal exhaust bracket. While we are here at this exhaust bracket, we are going to go ahead and actually remove the metal hanger from the rubber insulator. Before I do that I want to hit it with a little bit of penetrant or lubricant for ease of removal and reinstallation later. So for the ease of the installation of this hitch, I am going to chose to go ahead and remove this exhaust hanger also. Before I do that, I want to put a safety strap across my exhaust just to make sure it does not fall too far. Now that we have that out of the way, it will allow us to lower the exhaust as needed to get our hitch in place. 1:13

Our next step is going to be to get a fastener through this oblong hole here in the subframe. In order to do that, we are going to run our bolt leader, which is provided in the kit, up through the access hole and out of the oblong hole in the subframe. Start here at the oblong hole. Come out through our access hole so we can pull our block and bolt through. We will go ahead and feed on our 1 inch by 3 inch block. And then we will thread on our bolt. We are just going to push them up into our access hole. Then we are going to pull them down through our attachment point. Once we have them in place, we can go ahead and remove our bolt leader. You can see here that there is another hole in the subframe. This is going to be a side attachment point. What we are going to do here is put our bolt leader in place. You will see here our shorter 1 inch by 2 inch block. We are going to feed it on to our bolt leader and the thread on our bolt. However, we are not actually going to pull the bolt through until after we have our hitch in position. 2:29

Here on the passenger side, our attachment points are going to be here on the side of the subframe and these two on the bottom of the subframe. These holes are not threaded so we will be using the self-threading bolts to make threads in these three attaching points. I am going to go ahead and do that now before we put our hitch into position. Now that we have the passenger side prepped and ready for the install, we can go ahead and put our hitch in position. I am going to go ahead and start on the passenger side. We are going to use the same bolts that we used to create threads and conical tooth washers. The teeth of the washer will face the hitch. It is finger tight at this time until we get all of our fasteners in place. That will hold the passenger side for now. Let us go over to the driver side. Here on the driver side we are going to go ahead and push our hitch into position, being careful not to lose our bolt and block. We want to come back here to the side fastener and pull our bolt and block through. We will go ahead and take our bolt leader off now. We will go ahead and slide on our conical tooth washer. Install our nut. 3:43

What we need to do is remove the angle off of our exhaust bracket. I am going to go ahead and set this up in a vice and cut off the angle. Now we will go ahead and reinstall it onto the rubber insulator. Then what we are going to do is take this 1 by 2 inch block. It is actually going to get smashed in between the metal exhaust hanger and the hitch. Now that we have our exhaust hangers finger tight, we are going to go ahead and take this opportunity to run all of our fasteners down. Now that we have all of our fasteners tightened, we can go ahead and torque to specifications. I am going to go ahead and reinstall that forward exhaust hanger that we took down earlier. And that will complete the installation of Curt hitch part number 75299 on a 2009 Ford Taurus X.

I really thought this would be a difficult job. Was I ever wrong! I jacked the car up (both wheels due to my girth size). Each will was about 2-3 inches off the ground. I ran the fish wires through and ran the bolts in as directed. I taped the wires off so as not to lose anything! Had the wife hold the one end up while she moved a 5 gal bucket under it so all I had to do was hold the drivers end. She kind of stabilized the passenger end so it would not fall off the bucket while I attached the drivers side. Note, the wire fish is hard to remove while holding up the hitch and one handing the bolts. Since there are only two, it is best to have a guy help - hold the hitch while you unthread the wire fish and place the nuts on. I used the hitch weight to pinch the bolts while getting the washer and nuts on. Once the drivers side is done, the rest falls in place. The hitch fit perfect and I spent more time jacking the car up / down and putting tools away than doing the install. 564957

I was going to install it put paid my nephew to do it. He needed money for college. Ive been so busy using it I forgot to review it. Hope the car lasts a long time so I dont lose out. I use it on my ford five hundred and tow a small trailer for leaves and my snowblower. I also use to seasonally put in and take out my 17ft searay boat. Highly recommend this product. Nephew said threading that one bolt was a little challenging but fun once he got it, his father did help him. Money well spent. 315205

Video of the installation procedure was great! Watching it will save you time! The two driver side bolts went easily through the hitch and I got the nuts started. Passenger side holes did not line up well between the frame and the hitch. It took extra time to resolve this problem. This is the first time I encountered a problem on any hitch installation. This hitch will be used primarily for carrying a bike rack. 226317

Installed this on my 2008 Ford Taurus X SEL AWD for a tow from Illinois to Arizona, and it was excellent. Installation was easy, and we had no issues what-so-ever. I placed my order over the phone, and each person I came in contact with was extremely pleasant to talk to, I will DEFINITELY return and purchase any additional necessary items through etrailer.com. 153063

I did the installation by myself in my garage. Had to work on the floor, however, the carton that the hitch came in made a great padded floor covering to use. I also had a small floor jack and several jack stands to hold the hitch while lining up the bolts. The instruction video was spot on for this hitch and my 2009 Ford Taurus. It took me about 1.5 hours to install it, but that included clean up after it was completed. Great hitch and great installation video. 149117

2009 Ford Edge

This is a great product and great experience from etrailer. There was one issue that no M12 bolts is in the kit shipped to me, which is needed for my 2009 Taurus X. After talking to the customer service a new set of bolts was shipped to me fairly soon, in couple of weeks. Thanks for the great video, installation is smooth. I got the muffler hanger hook cut at a local muffler shop. I was able to mount it on my own. The tip is to screw one bolt halfway onto the horizonal weldnut on passenger side, then use some metal wire to hang the end of hitch on the bolt through the bolt hole on the hitch. I used hanging wire for big picture frame and it worked really well. Then a jack stand can support it quite well. Fishing the bolts was quite easy to me. Most of time was spent on aligning it and the muffler hanger bracket, and tightening the bolts to spec. I didn't need to jack the car up and was lying on ground when doing it. After installed, I found that the rubber muffler hanger is in contact with the hitch and squeezed a little bit. Hopefully it is just fine. Also the soft edge of bumper is pressed under the hitch as shown on the picture here. Again not a problem to me. For tools, a 19" deep wall socket is needed to tighten up the bolts, besides others. Quite stadard one. 147305

Tow bar installed exactly as described on my 2008 Taurus X, but the receiver arrived damaged despite being in a box with lots of packaging. I suspect it was damaged before being shipped although I am not sure. Specified torque for passenger side bolts stripped out the horizontal one, but my torque wrench hasn't been calibrated probably since I was born. Muffler hanger basically sits right against the bar. So far I haven't noticed any noise. 146128

Wow!!! Unbelievabl;e that a 80 year old man could install item#75299 on his 2007 Ford Freestyle.....by imself. Yes!!! But it took me aprx 6 hours on my back in my garage...no lift involved. Followed the video and paper instructions. Removed the muffler bracket as instructed, but the muffler didn't lower enough to allow for the hitch to go over top. Had to angel, tug, pull...etc., used several wooden blocks to elevate, plus my floor jack. The fishing wires worked great....but one think that I didn't like was the self-threading bolts on the passenger side. I used the two on thebottom railing, but on the side I drilled out and used one of the bolts/washer etc. Makes for a more safter installation. All in all, I needless to say....sleep very sould after finishing this project. Next comes the light installation...piece of cake. 144759

Great product! Just taking our time. My buddy and I put it on in about an hour. We backed the 2008 Ford Taurus X up on ramps in the driveway. We had an ipad to watch the video on how to install the trailer hitch off the etrailer.com website. Having the right tools made it a breeze. Was a little tricky putting exhaust back on, but that goes back to having the right tools and in that case a car lift would have been nice.. Lol. Once again Great product and will suggest to anyone that needs a trailer hitch to get it from etrailer.. Thanks etrailer.com! 82172

I don't have a hoist, so I backed my car up onto 2 steel ramps, and that was more than enough clearance. I referred only to the video during the install, and everything went smoothly. I took my time with everything, and even without a second person, I was still finished in about 2 hours. If you were to do it again, it would probably only take an hour. Also, delivery and followup by eTrailer was fantastic. I highly recommend them! 81309

Seems to be a great hitch for the price. Very sturdy, good welds, and coated well. Time will tell but I am optimistic. I'm from Wisconsin so winter can be tough on just about anything taken on roads. Instructions were good, but the video and pictures provided on the website made it so easy to install. I took about 1 and a half hours start to finish...I think most of the time was taken fishing those bolts. Thank goodness for those fish wires! Also, I highly recommend a helper. If like me and you don't have a helper, I found that a floor jack also works very well. I would definitely recommend to others. 68650

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2008 Ford Taurus X for Towing a Pop Up Camper
  • If you plan to do some towing with your 2008 Ford Taurus X I would recommend going with a Class III hitch like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75299, which has been confirmed to fit your vehicle. Class III hitches have more capacity than Class II hitches and have more options for future hitch accessories like bike racks or cargo carrier. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount...

The most bikes a trunk-mount carrier that we offer can carry is 3, however if you are able to still fit one bike inside the vehicle, this may be your best option. You should check your vehicle owner manual and make sure that the gross trailer weight and the tongue weight of the boat, loaded and ready to tow, are within the vehicle limits. We have the Draw-Tite Max-Frame, # 75299, which has a 3,500 pound weight carrying capacity and would be plenty of hitch to tow the boat you mentioned, as long as the vehicle ratings are high enough. • The 1000 pound towing weight limit for your 2005 Ford 500, and the 2000 pound rating for your 1996 Thunderbird I was able to confirm online. Vehicle tow ratings are determined by the manufacturer, in part based on horsepower, but may also be a function of the extent to which there is access to the frame rails for mounting a hitch. If a particular vehicle design limits access to the strongest frame members, then the tow rating will be lower than it otherwise might be. However, there...

  • Is There a Class III Hitch Available for a 2008 Ford Taurus X
  • There are Class III hitches available for your 2008 Ford Taurus X. You would want a Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75299. Curt is a good hitch manufacturer. We strive to only sell quality products, and Curt is a quality company. With that being, said there there are no Curt hitches available for your 2008 Ford Taurus X. To determine what the towing capacity of your vehicle you will want to consult the owners manual of your vehicle. The weight capacity will be listed there. The # 75299 is...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2008 Ford Taurus
  • There are hitches available that would fit either your 2011 Hyundai Santa fe or 2008 Ford Taurus, but the Draw Tite Hitch part # 36309 that you referenced will not fit either. For your Santa Fe you would want the Draw-Tite part # 75684. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118415. For your Taurus you would want the Draw-Tite part # 75299. For trailer wiring you would want the part # 118447. For a ball mount, hitch ball, and pin and clip, I would recommend the etrailer Ball...

  • Towing Capacity of Class III Trailer Hitch When Installed on 2007 Ford Freestyle
  • Having a hitch with a higher capacity than the vehicle itself is a common occurrence. From my online research, I found that the Ford Freestyle does indeed have a 2000 lb towing capacity. As you correctly stated, the Class III hitches available for the vehicle have a 3500 lb towing capacity. Because the overall capacity of the towing system will be limited to the capacity of its lowest rated component, you'd be limited to the 2000 lb capacity of the vehicle. Even if a hitch has a higher...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2008 Ford Taurus X to Tow a Horse Trailer
  • Your 2008 Ford Taurus X has a gross trailer weight capacity of 2,000 pounds. As long as the combined weight of the trailer and the horse is less than that then you could tow the horse and trailer. Going with a single horse trailer made of aluminum will keep the weight down. So it is possible depending on the horse. Since the vehicle is rated for a max of 2,000 pounds you can save some money by going with a Class II hitch, # 36360. It is rated for more than the vehicle but you are still...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2005 Ford Five Hundred
  • There are numerous trailer hitches available for the 2005 Ford Five Hundred. I recommend going with a class III trailer hitch because it will have a 2 inch receiver that will afford you more options in terms of accessories. You can go with one such as the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75299. I have included a link to the installation instructions and a video showing installation on a similar vehicle. I would not say that this is an overly difficult hitch installation provided that you have all...

  • Towing Capacity and Parts Needed to Tow with a 2009 Ford Taurus X
  • I looked up the online version of the owner's manual for your 2009 Ford Taurus X and on page 248 it states that your vehicle is rated to tow a trailer weighing up to 2,000 lbs with a max tongue weight of 200 lbs. Even if you install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75299 which has a trailer rating of 3,500 lbs and tongue weight of 350 lbs you will be limited by the least rated component which is your Taurus. If you have a small trailer to tow then you also need the recommended...

  • Hitch Recommendation for Bike Rack on 2006 Ford Freestyle
  • I would recommend that you get a Class 3 hitch with a 2 inch receiver for your vehicle. The Class 3 hitch will provide the most versatility and options for towing and hauling. You will have a wider selection of all accessories, bike racks included, with the 2 inch receiver hitch. It will also give you the best options if your towing or hauling needs should change in the future. The Draw-Tite Class 3 Trailer Hitch, item # 75299 would be an excellent choice and installs easily with no...

  • Can I use the Curt Dual Receiver Tube Adapter # D-192 with a Cargo Carrier
  • You can use the Curt Dual Receiver Tube Adapter, # D-192, as long as the Class II trailer hitch on your Ford Five Hundred has a 2 inch x 2 inch receiver. Class II receivers can have either a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening or a 2-inch receiver opening. If you have a 1-1/4 hitch opening on your Ford 500, I would consider upgrading your hitch to a 2-inch receiver opening like the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75299, which will work well with a cargo carrier and scooter.
