Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2015 Ford Edge - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2015 Ford Edge, we're going to be taking a look at and installing the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver. It's a class III hitch, part number 75234. This is what the hitch looks like once it's installed on your vehicle. Pretty easy install, it simply bolts into place. There's no drilling or welding required. A nice black power coat finish, with a base e-coat for superior rust and corrosion protection. It comes with a max tongue weight rating of six hundred seventy five pounds, and that's both with and without weight distribution system.

It's max trailer weight rating is forty-five hundred pounds. Again both with and without a weight distribution system. You want to be sure to check to see what your vehicle is rated for. Go with whichever is lowest. This hitch is going to be perfect for all of your Class III accessories. As we can see here, we've got a five eighths inch hitch pin hole, along with your half inch hole here that's perfect for j-pin stabilization system.

Something that you'll see on this one that's a little bit different from the other hitches, the connection for your safety chains, it actually comes down a little bit, and drops in order for you to hook them in, instead of coming straight out to the side. This vehicle comes with the feature of being able to wave your foot underneath the rear bumper to open the tailgate if you have things in your hands. With this hitch in place, that will still work. We'll go ahead and show you that now. I wave my foot underneath. You can see it'll still open with the remote in my pocket. Next we'll give you some measurement which should help with choosing hitch-mounted accessories such as bike racks, cargo carriers or ball mounts.

The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most part of the rear bumper is about four and three quarter inches. The distance from the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is about twelve and a half inches. Also the ground clearance to the bottom of the safety chain loops is about eight and half inches. Now let's show you how to install it on your vehicle. To begin our install, the first thing we'll need to do is remove these two ten millimeter nuts. Then we'll repeat that on the other side.

We'll go around and take these little five point five millimeter bolts out. We're going do to that all the way around, including on the heat shield along the back. Once we've got all our fasteners removed, we can take our little covers up in here and just pull them down out of the way. Once we've done that on both sides, we can get ready to drop our exhaust down. Now in order to take our exhaust hangers off, we're just going to spray a little bit of lubricant on there, just to help it slide off a lite bit easier. What I'm going to use, I'm going to take a pair of channel locks, and with this end you up it on the very end of the hanger, then the other end you put it on the bushing there and just push it through as far as you can with these. I've already gone ahead and done the other side. I'll pull this off, and I'm using the strap to support the exhaust so it doesn't hang too low. There's one ten millimeter nut straight up there that we need to remove. Once that's down, we'll be able to take this out of the way. Then we'll set it aside for re-installing later. The next thing, is we're going to fish wire in our carriage bolt and spacers, using these fish wires here. They're going to go through those two holes, and then the two round holes here on the bottom. I'm going to fish this end through the hole I need it to come out, and this is going to be our access hole here, so pull it out there. I'm going to start with this one that's towards the rear of the vehicle. In order to help me guide it back through, I'm going to put a little bit of bend in it at about the length I need between those holes, so then I can feed it in, work it down that way. I can use my finger to just help find it, just guide it out here. There we go. Then I can grab a carriage bolt and spacer. Need the spacer on first, then thread our carriage bolt into place. Then I'll be able to hold this other end of the fish wire, feed that spacer through there, then the carriage bolt, and pull them through so that they're lined up at the hole we need. Then I'll do that same thing with these other three on this side. Then we'll repeat that exact same process or the other side. The cross frame for the hitch is going to come right across here. In order for it to be tucked up as much as possible, we're going to have to cut this little stud out of the way. In order to do that, if you have die grinder, you can use that, or if you have some sort of rotary tool such as a Dremel or Milwaukee you can use that as well with a cut off wheel. You want to be sure to grab some safety glasses. You want to try to get that cut off as flush as possible. You want to grab a second set of hands. You also want to pay attention to which fish wire goes where. You need to get them started through the hitch. As for these outside ones, make sure you go from the inside out. Once you got it set up into place, take one of the conical teeth washers, with the teeth facing upwards, get the nut threaded on, and just run that up until it's hand tight and it'll allow you to hold your hitch in place, so you can get the rest of them set. These ones on the side, you'll have to pull back through. We'll carefully take those off, making sure not to push them back through into the frame rail. We can get our conical tooth washers and nuts started on those as well. You can get those tightened down by hand. Then finally you do that on the fourth ones as well. Then we'll go to the other side and put the rest of our hardware on. We'll be sure to tighten them down. Once you got them all tight, you want to be sure to torque them to what's specified in the instruction manual. We'll do that to all of them. Now up here, you're not going to be able to reinstall the fascia that was right here because of your hitch, so we'll go ahead and reinstall our exhaust into the hangers. We'll put those back in on both sides. With our exhaust reinstalled, we'll make sure to remove the strap that we used to support it. Then we can reinstall our panels on either side here. That's going to complete our look at the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, which is a Class III hitch, part number 75234 on our 2015 Ford Edge.

I have owned this product for a year and have been extremely happy with it. It looks great on my 2017 Ford Edge. It is excellent quality. It looks good too, the bar is completely hidden. The only part visible is the receiver. The customer service was exceptional. Any questions I had were answered quickly and professionally. I would highly recommend this product and company! 591188

Great service, received it in 3 days. Great product, had one on my 2016 edge sport and it worked very well. I pull a 5 x 10 enclosed motorcycle trailer, never had any issues. Took about 2 hrs to install at home by myself. Got the same hitch for my ‘17 edge sport. 498687

Product just great, perfect fit. Found that inserting pull wire through finish hole threads first, without bolt installed then installing bolt, it was easier to thread the wire through and made installing the bolt easier and faster. Printing on instructions less than clear, quality wise, blurry. The video is great and easy to follow. 528087

Thanks again to e-trailer for making my life a little easier with my new trailer hitch. It was once again easy to install and it looks great. The instructions and being able to watch the video makes it easy to install and in no time ready to use. This is the second hitch I have bought and I will definitely recommend this product. Thanks again George. Now I can take my power chair and get more shopping done. The hitch is almost invisible. 525420

Perfect fit. Had installed in about 2 hours working alone (will need jacks to hold in place). I do bodywork on cars so this wasn't a big deal installing. Also bought wiring harness which also installing was easy. The only draw back will have to move sensor for hands free liftgate. Excellent product and would buy again. 459627

Comments

Dale,it is possible that the hitch will partially block the liftgate sensors on the bottom of the vehicle near where the hitch is installed. The hitch should not affect the other liftgate sensors so there should not be a need for relocation. The feature should still work. Some customers do not have any issues with the sensors at all because the sensors are not positioned in the same place on all of the vehicles.

Product well made. One odd, mis sized washer in parts package. Written instructions that come with unit horrible. Best to watch installation video. Was able to install on the ground in a couple of hours. A little concerned about removal of muffler/rear bumper heat guard. As long as the rear bumper doesn't melt off the car I'm satisfied! 380155

Received this hitch in only a few days after it was ordered and the order arrived complete. Between the written directions and an available video I was able to install it in less than hour by myself. The only downside was/is that it sits a bit lower than an OEM hitch and as such will occasionally cause it to drag when entering/exiting a driveway. Nothing you can't live with, but just be aware it can happen. I also ordered the wiring harness at the same time for the Edge and it also came promptly and within a few days. This was a bit more challenging to install, but again the directions and an available video made it a DIY install. Removing the tail light assembly without scratching the paint or breaking something was the fun part. They don't just "pop out" so be persistent! 480775

Was not exactly sure which product I needed for my vehicle but with the product information that was provided on the website I was able to order the exact product needed. There is more than adequate information available to install the hitch, and all the parts needed to make the installation were included. This is a nice product and would highly recommend it. It was shipped the same day as ordered and reached my destination in a timely order and in good condition. 474284

The installation was relatively easy. Hint for 2015-2016 Ford Edge Sport models, you have to remove the exhaust trim from the rear bumper to help with removing the exhaust system. Took an hour and a half to install this hitch. 328352

thank you for following up with me. The Draw Tite trailer hitch is great and I have no complaints. I solely use it to attach my bicycle rack and it is perfect. I love it!

This is my 2nd trailer hitch that I've installed - both bought from eTrailer. I installed the class III hitch on my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium. It took me a little over 2 hours to install. I jacked my car up in the garage. I'm sure it would be a lot easier on a lift. Overall - I'm very happy with the product. It's exactly what I expected. The box that it was shipped in was a little beat up. They need to use more packing material in the boxes. I used a Sawzall to cut off the stud because I don't have a dremel. Once you lower the exhaust down you'll have enough room to get the sawzall in there. 523027

Everything was included and worked as expected. The hitch and light kit on a 2017 Lincoln MKX took just over 4 hours working by myself (My help had to cancel at the last minute). The instruction videos were helpful, however I made a couple of changes. I did have to remove the back bumper panel, but I did not lower the muffler and exhaust. There was just enough room to slip the hitch over the tail pipes and position and mount the hitch. I supported the hitch with jack stands until I could get the first couple of nuts secured. Before re-installing the bumper, I mounted the plastic fender panels. Made it much easier to do first. The trickiest part of the wiring was finding where to mount the adapter box. Would up putting it right on the rear just below and to the left of the curve in the trunk opening. I then used a wire running kit from Harbor Freight (65326) to route the power wire through the frame. I used the same access hole used to thread the bolts for the hitch and found an exit hole just forward of the rear wheel. From there I found a debris cover to just under the firewall. Made running the power wire a snap. Parts wise, you will want to have some extra ty-wraps around. The ones included are barely enough and very short. 473165

Here is a summary of my personal experience of installing the Draw-Tite model 75234 onto my 2015 Ford Edge Sport. 1. I backed the car onto two 9” ramps. This gave me plenty of room to work 2. The kit instructions say to have 10mm and 5.5mm sockets available. This is a must as the bumper fascia is attached with 5.5mm sheet metal screws of which two are recessed. Do visit Home Depot and purchase the 5.5mm socket for $1.98. Will save you lots of headaches 3. Another important instruction is to secure the exhaust pipes well before unfastening the muffler. The pipes are quite heavy so secure accordingly. You don’t want them dropping to the ground. 4. If you back your car onto ramps, the height to lift the hitch into place for bolting is quite high. I used a jack for one side while muscling the other in place. The hitch is quite heavy so better to have a friend to help. 5. After removing the heat shield, the bumper fascia is not very secure. There are 6 unused sheet metal screws available to help secure the plastic fascia. I used two strips of plumber tape wrapped around the hitch crossbar and fastened to the fascia to firm up the plastic. Worked well. All in all I am pleased with the 75234 hitch. I like that the crossbar is hidden but am not real pleased with the safety chain loops. They are too low for my taste. Since I will only be using the hitch for my bike rack, I may end up cutting the loops off. 561048

I like this hitch. It tucks up underneath nicely. It is installed on a 2015 ford edge sport. Only thing i wish this kit had some sort of replacement brace for the lower valance. You have to remove the muffler heat shield as a result of installation. I feel it would crack over time in the wind. Had to file the hole to fit the rectangular pieces thru when feeding bolts thru frame which i felt was pretty minor. The vehicle specific wire harness is awesome also! Easy to follow instructions too! 515809

Great product. Four stars rather than five because I wish they made a version where the receiver is several inches higher. All you would have to do is trim the rear bumper pan a little bit and it would be much higher off the ground (i.e. near factory receiver height). You already have to trim a stud under there to make it fit so who cares about some minor plastic panel trimming? You will need to reinforce the rear body panel a little bit due to the trim piece that is removed to make room for the hitch. I cut four pieces of plumbing pipe strap. I pulled four of the factory nut clips off of the removed panel and stuck one to each of the plumbing straps. I was then able to run the straps from the factory holes in the bottom of the trim panel diagonally up to the studs above the muffler. The rear trim panel is now way more rigid than it was from the factory. I screwed a seven-pin electrical receptacle to the side of the hitch. The rear of the receptacle is a bit close to the muffler so I ran the wiring through a spark plug boot insulator and zip-tied it as far away from the muffler as possible. Make sure you run all trailer wiring through split conduit or similar to make sure the wires don't cut from vibration against the vehicle undercarriage! Do not skip the conduit - it is cheap and easy and will protect your wiring. Overall, installation is easy and the hitch feels really solid. I'm very happy with it. 574742

My son & I were able to install the hitch and wiring harness in about 3 hours. The videos to install gave me the confidence I needed to do the job correctly and safely. Good job! Due to the bumper fascia of the 2016 Lincoln MKX, I did not want to fasten the mounting bracket for the 4-pole connecter on the fascia itself. So I ordered the no-drill long bracket (#18136) and bent the strait end 90° to form a shape of a long [. I was then able to attach the long bracket on the hitch and bolt the mounting bracket on the other end of the long bracket. The 4-pole connecter is now just below the bumper facial and easy to get at. Very clean look and sturdy! 372624

Good product.. As an FYI from the installation video, a 5.5mm socket is the same as a 7/32" socket. As far as how I did my hitch installation: 1) I put anti-seize on the threads of the 8 mounting bolts, just in case I needed to remove the hitch later. 2) When I was reinstalling those plastic covers behind each wheel, I installed a couple thick fender washers on each of the forward mounting studs so that the plastic cover would not be bent or in a bind. With the hitch installed, the rearward stud passes thru the hitch bracket but the forward stud does not. 3) That rearward heat shield/plastic piece is removed and cannot be reused with this hitch. I noticed that in addition to being a heat shield, that plastic piece also functions to help stabilize the rear bumper cover. With it removed, that whole rear portion of the bumper cover moved easily and I became concerned about it moving excessively at highway speeds. To address the issue, I fabricated a couple of brackets from some light-gauge steel flat stock. I installed one bracket to each side of the hitch using the existing holes in the bumper cover. I used 1/4" push-pin fasteners to attach the bracket to the bumper cover, which allows it to have just a little movement, much like it had with the heat shield in place. I attached the other end of the bracket to a stud used for the heat shield directly above the muffler. 429618

The fit is as advertised and it looks custom. It took less than an hour to install crawling on my garage floor by myself, so if you have a lift and a friend it's fun and easy. hook it up to my 5x8 landscaping trailer and all the lights worked perfectly with the wiring kit. highly recommend this hitch receiver. 323943

Great value very nice Quality hitch. Anyone installing you MUST watch the Video's its is so nice to see how it all should go with out fumbling thru the Damn instructions and understanding something wrong. Love the fish wires, what a great idea! Only Negative is .....Nowhere does it state that the Factory Heat Shield gets left off above the muffler at the rear Valance, I was not real crazy about leaving it off, but there really is no way to re-install with the hitch installed. They need to drop the hitch about 1 1/2" to accommodate the factory heat shield, also this shield provides support for the rear bumper lower valance area. All in all though- very happy with the hitch. Great price! 404890

Quite happy with product. Was quite surprised how quick it was processed, shipped and on my doorstep. However packaging could be improved. The edges of hitch should be protected inside the box so they don't blow holes in the shipping box. I sent an email about the damage caused by poor packaging but never received a reply. I had to call to get answers, the fact that they gave me a touch up paint "rebate" shows I'm not the only one with this issue. 615084

2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Had purchased hitch and wiring for 2013 Chevy equinox. It was perfect and the videos make it easy to install. Looked at video for my Ford edge and expect the same. Also very quick service. Hitch came in two days with no shipping. Great job 608836

Order and shipping are easy and fast. Very disappointed in shipping/packaging. The product arrived, box is torn open due to heavy nature of the product and the product is scratched. I now have to paint over the bare metal so I do not have rust issues. Better packaging is need for this product for shipment. I cant rate the product as I have not yet installed it. The rating of stars is poor packaging of a heavy product. 607213

I would recommend buying from Etrailer to a friend or family. They seemed competitively priced, placing an order was easy and delivery was quick. Installation was exactly like the video, all as promised. I am 63, slightly impaired from a stroke and did the entire installation myself. Very pleased. 600481

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Does Heat Shield Get Removed to Install Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Ford Edge
  • The instructions for Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75234 for the 2017 Ford Edge state "for Edge Sport and MKX AWD model, remove (6) bolts and (1) flange nut attached on center plastic panel with heat shields, see Figure 3, and then remove the panel. Return to owner." See instructions linked for reference. This means that on the affected models the heat shield would not be reinstalled. The hitch itself can act as a heat sink though so nothing is really lost with the removal. I have linked...

  • Which Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Ford Edge has the Best Ground Clearance
  • Curt trailer hitch # C13234 and Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75214, which is the comparable hitch, have the receiver and cross tube in basically the same place so they will have nearly identical ground clearances once installed. If anything the Draw-Tite hitch is a bit tighter to the bottom fascia. The bottoms of the hitches will be approximately 1-1/2 inches or so lower than the bottoms of the exhaust tips. If you are looking at Draw-Tite hitch # 75234 only the receiver will be visible....

  • Best Hitch Size for 2018 Ford Edge
  • Any time a vehicle has both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches available for it we tend to recommend the larger 2-inch size. There are several good reasons. Typically there is not much increase in cost, but there is usually a substantial increase in weight capacity. For example, the 1-1/4-inch hitches like Curt # C12140 usually have a tongue weight (TW) rating of no more than 350-lbs, but the 2-inch Class III hitches like Draw-Tite # 75234 and Curt # C13234 have TW ratings that are roughly...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for 2018 Ford Edge
  • Yes, the Draw Tite hitch part # 75234 that you referenced fits the 2018 Ford Edge SE/SEL, Sport, and Titanium models so this would fit and work well for you.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch for 2018 Ford Edge Sport Allow Hands Free Liftgate to Open
  • For your 2018 Ford Edge Sport the Draw Tite hitch part # 75234 is a confirmed fit and will still allow your hands free liftgate sensors to function properly. You'll just have to kick to the sides of the hitch opening. For your vehicle trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118677. You will also need a ball mount to tow a trailer. I recommend the etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs # 989900. This kit will...

  • Which Hitch for 2019 Lincoln Nautilus is Most Hidden
  • Sorry for the confusion! Only the hitch opening of the Draw Tite part # # 75234 hangs below the rear bumper of the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus whereas the Curt # C13262 the crosstube hangs down below as well. I attached a couple pictures to show you the difference. The red vehicle is the Draw Tite and the other picture is Curt.

  • Trailer Hitch Fit for 2019 Ford Edge Titanium Recommendation
  • I checked with Draw Tite and the hitch part # 75234 is a confirmed fit for your 2019 Ford Edge Titanium. It does fit under the rear bumper and does not require any fascia/bumper trimming. I attached a picture of what it looks like installed.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver Compatible With Hands Free Tailgate On 2017 Ford Edge Titanium
  • On your 2017 Ford Edge Titanium, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75234 trailer hitch receiver. With all your hitch options, the Hands-free Liftgate sensor areas will be limited to areas away from the center where hitch receiver opening is located. This system will still work on the areas away from the center of the receiver so you won't lose that functionality and feature. For your vehicle trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford Edge Sport with Hands Free Liftgate
  • For your 2015 Ford Edge Sport the Draw Tite Hitch part # 75234 would be your best option. It has a hidden crosstube which means visibility of the hitch would be reduced and because it has also been tested to still allow the hands free lift gate to function. Draw Tite states: "Hands-free Liftgate sensor areas will be limited to areas away from the center where hitch receiver opening is located." So basically you just have to kick to either side of the hitch tube. For trailer wiring...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ford Edge Sport
  • For your 2016 Ford Edge Sport I recommend the 2-inch Class III hitch option over the 1-1/4-inch Class II since it will give you a better safety margin for handling the weight of your chosen bike rack and bikes. For that you would want the part # 75234. Plus a 2-inch hitch will be able to work with more accessory items, such as a cargo carrier like # C18153, in case that is ever in your future plans. Considering the small price difference, a Class III hitch like # 75234 is usually the...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2015 Ford Edge SEL
  • The hitch receiver tube you are referring to on the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75234 is welded to the hitch and not removable. This feature is designed to accommodate the sport models of the 2015 Ford Edge. The sport models have an enlarged rear bumper that requires the drop tube in order to clear the fascia. Since you have an SEL, I recommending the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75214. The Draw-Tite Hitch (Part # 75214) is a Class III trailer...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Lincoln MKX
  • For your 2018 Lincoln MKX the best hitch option is the Draw Tite part # 75234 as it has the best weight capacities and the best price. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Trailer Hitch Comparison and Recommendation for 2019 Lincoln Nautilus
  • For your 2019 Lincoln Nautilus we have the Draw Tite hitch part # 75234 and the Curt # C13262. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Comparing Installation of Class III Trailer Hitches for 2017 Ford Edge SEL
  • The three 2-inch Class III trailer hitches available for your 2017 Ford Edge SEL, shown on the linked page, do not differ much in their installation processes, but one among them, Draw-Tite # 75234, will offer a more discrete appearance since it has a concealed cross tube while the others have a cross tube that will remain visible after installation. This particular hitch also offer slightly higher weight capacities than the others. None of the hitches requires you to do any drilling...

  • Where to Mount 4-Way Bracket on Draw Tite Hitch 75234
  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 75214 does have a bracket welded to the cross tube, but if you wanted to use the more hidden Draw Tite # 75234 we do have an option for mounting a trailer wiring bracket. A great solution for mounting a 4-pole wiring harness like Tekonsha # 118669 without having to drill into your bumper is to use a no-drill bracket like # C57202. The no-drill brackets include a ring clamp that secures to your hitch tube.
