Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

2018 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Excellent service and fast shipping from etrailer.com. The craftsmanship of the product itself though has a lot to be desired to be great, according to my OCD standards. It will probably do the job and handle the weight it's rated for but it looks like someone was learning how to weld on the unit I received and Draw-Tite's quality control is not that good. The welded pieces of the receiver were not aligned that well. Check out the pictures. 595072

2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

Got it installed in my 2019 golf sportwagen awd in only 45 mins, it fits perfectly. My only regret is that before looking on etrailer, I wasted 2 hours at [trailer rental place] only for them to order the wrong hitch, and then waste a morning trying to install it. Etrailer was definitely the better option! 667812

Wanted to wait until I had actually installed (or at least tried to install) the hitch before writing a review. Well, it's done, and I'm overall very happy. I was putting it on a 2018 Golf Sportwagen, just a month out of the dealer, so I was very hesitant to do it myself, even though the videos I saw made it look easy. After staring at it for a couple of day, I finally gave it a go. Went smoother than expected. Don't think I broke anything, except for a slight break on the lights connector (pull red tag out, then squeeze tab). Also, don't look for the appearance panel they talk about it the instructions; gone on the 2018. Otherwise, I think it went well. I think part of it was luck though; the opportunity IS there to screw up. Went well for me though. Hitch seems to be of good quality. Just planning on using it for bikes. Thanks. 525569

2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

I installed the bumper yesterday on my 2015 sportwagen tdi SEL/Highline. There is a good youtube video for this car that shows what to take off and how, so long as you can fill in the blanks with common sense. First time doing this kind of thing, I took my time and it took me 3 hours. I did it by myself. Build quality of the hitch looks good. Is made in Mexico. Fitment of the hitch between the body and crash bar is also good, I didn't have to adjust anything or hammer any tabs flat on the body. Between the instructions and youtube, taking off the bumper and putting it back on is doable by anyone who has the mindset to do it. Torque specs of the mounting bolts are in the instructions, it's important not to overtighten, I used some loctite as well. Instructions for cutting into the bumper is accurate, don't need to cut more than what they say too. Just make sure you are measuring from the correct side (you have a 50/50 chance otherwise :D). You don't need to cut extra for the chain loops, there is an oem hole in the bumper that you can get the loops through, and then the loops sit in front of the bumper. I purchased this hitch because it is somewhat concealed, and because it sits in the bumper rather than below (better ground clearance). So far it has delivered, will see how it goes when I use it after the car's break in period. 389005

2016 Volkswagen Golf

The hitch was well made and relatively easy to install. I installed it on a 2016 Golf Sportwagen LE. I can confirm that as others have stated that I did NOT need to trim the bumper fascia (as the instructions said I would need to). I separated the black, lower part of the fascia from the top part before reinstalling the main fascia. I was then able to snap the lower part on after fitting it around the hitch chain loops. A couple of other notes: the LE has the rear cross traffic alert. The sensors are bolted on each side of the bumper. I thought with the additional thickness of the sensors that the bolts might not be long enough but they fit fine. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the torx screws in the wheel wells have very little clearance. I highly recommend getting a torx racquet set. I bought one at a hardware store for about $20 (Kobalt 24-Piece Standard (SAE) and Metric Mechanic's Tool Set with Hard Case). This makes the removal of those screws straight-forward. 417306

All components seem of good quality, however I have 2 complaints. One is the instructions don’t really specify if you should run the power wire to the battery inside or outside of the car. I ran mine inside. You have to peel back a few pieces of trim and it got a bit difficult going thru the firewall. Depending what features your car has (I have an Alltrack SE), you can run the power wire thru an extra gasket right below where the main wire loom goes thru. My other issue is the connector they give you to hook up to the battery requires you to completely take the nut off the bolt that clamps onto the battery post. This nut is designed to never come off completely (I forget the type of nut it is) so you’ll need a new nut and bolt to get the battery all connected again. I have the areas where I ran the power wire and power inverter in red on my pics. Hope these help! 441044

It works great, I have bumped around on your site looking for an extension with some kind of expandable mechanism. I mostly use the hitch for a bike rack and unfortunately, the tiny bit of clearance between the bike rack and the hitch turns into a real shaky bike rack. This has nothing to do with the hitch, the hitch is great and it was super easy to install. I saw someone with a bike rack that had this mechanism and it worked great. Not sure if you know what I am talking about.

I have included the anti-rattle devices that we offer, and there are a couple that are expandable but those depend on the style of the stinger on your bike rack. My recommendation would be the Roadmaster Quite Hitch # RM-061-125
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

The hitch works great on my 2017 VW Alltrack. I use it all the time to pull smaller [rental] trailers. I really like where the hitch fits on the Alltrack, it looks like it was designed to fit in the gap under the bumper. The instructions were pretty easy to follow and the job only took a few hours to complete once I'd gathered up the necessary tools. A few quick notes, the screw in the wheel well has very little space between it and the tire, so you will need a torx bit that can work in the small space (or grip a small bit with a wrench, or jack up the car to let the wheel hang a bit lower.) Some of the pictures may be from a European model, so some of the screws appear to be in a different spot, but it's not to tricky to figure out where they are. The most difficult part of the installation wasn't the hitch, but figuring out how to run power to the trailer light adapter, I ended up running the power through the spare wheel compartment and outside the car (underneath). So far that is working fine. 575266

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

The hitch was a breeze to install. It took me right at two hours but I took some extra time to clean the dirt and crud off of the inside of my bumper and fender wells. I didn’t need a second person to help. I have a 2017 Alltrack and it went on just great. Some other users have mentioned disassembling the second piece of fascia at the bottom of the bumper and reinstalling it afterward rather than cutting the trim. That’s what I did and it worked perfectly. A couple of notes. 1. The video says there are three t25 screws under each side. On the alltrack there are two. 2. I bought $6 auto trim tools online and they helped with all the clips. Nothing got broken or scratched. 3. I did not lift the car or remove the wheels. The torx screws in the fender were probably the most challenging. I used a 1/4” socket and ratchet for the three upper ones but the lowest one had no clearance for even the normal socket, so I used a 1/4” wrench and a t25 bit. It worked perfectly but took a little extra dexterity. The rubber etrailer cover makes it look 100x better. Invest in one. 565214

Ford Flex

Decent product but didn't meet my needs. I purchased this hitch mainly to carry a bike rack and with two bikes on the rack there was quite a bit of movement due to flex in the hitch. It was enough movement that I wasn't sure about the long term durability of the hitch. Ended up purchasing a version with a 2 inch receiver, and that one is much better. 596349

As others have mentioned, you need to take the bumper fascia completely off to install the Hitch. I have a Golf AllTrack which is slightly different than the SportWagen shown in the video. There the amount of hardware attaching the fascia was not the same. Also my car has sensors built into the fascia and one on the bumper itself. They are attached by 2 cable fittings which were not difficult to separate for removal, just don't forget to re-attach them before re-installing the fascia as access would be difficult or impossible with the fascia in place. I did this by myself and it took about 3 hours! That said it would be quicker with 2 people (or at least a helping hand to get the hitch and bumper in place) and I can be extremely...umm..thorough. I watched the video from the etrailer site, and therefore found the printed instructions lacking information, additionally the measurements listed for cutting the hole for the receiver did not apply to my car. The fascia on my car has an additional trim piece which I removed to cut the hole, then I had to cut the trim to get it to fit around the receiver. This was pretty straight forward and I liked knowing if I messed up, the trim would cover my mistakes! I am very impressed with how it turned out, I am happy there is no drilling involved and the end result looks like it was installed by the manufacturer. Removing and re-installing the fascia was the most difficult part, the job would be much easier if you have access to a lift (Like they do in the video) instead of crawling around on the ground. However if you have access to a lift, you are either a professional mechanic, or rich enough to have someone else install this hitch for you, in either case you are not reading my review! 547337

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

I installed one of these hitches on my 2018 VW Alltrack last year and the quality was good. However, the product quality seems to have gone downhill as I just received a new hitch for my 2019 VW Alltrack and the chain link welding is way out of alignment. See the pictures. I'm considering returning this and looking at other options. 644572

Installed on 2019 VW Golf Alltrack. I went really slowly with the install out of fear of breaking fascia tabs, but I didn't break any and it fit perfectly. I installed it single-handedly and had no real trouble. BONUS POINTS - you do NOT need to trim your fascia on a 2019 Golf Alltrack (I can't speak for any other); it fit perfectly with just a little nudging. Very pleased! 883644

I purchased this hitch and installed it myself about a year ago. So far it has been perfect for what I needed - attaching my hitch mounted bike rack to my 2018 VW Alltrack. The install definitely gave me a lot of stress. I am normally a pretty handy guy, but something about removing the bumper cover on a brand new car made me feel very uneasy. My recommendation for any one in a similar situation would be to 1) read every tutorial you can find on the internet and watch every video on the subject at least 400 times. 2) Make sure you have all the tools you need to reach all of the screws holding the bumper cover on, panel removing tools and a torque wrench (you can usually rent one of these from AutoZone). 3) Have a helper or 2 on hand to help with removing and installing both the bumper cover and the hitch. If you do all this I'm sure you will find the installation a breeze. 847526

One year in having this hitch and I've got no regrets. The finish is holding up quite well with no rust or discoloration. It remains unobtrusive when there's nothing in it as well. No scraping on bumps/ramps, no skinned shins, etc. Highly recommended if you need a hitch for light duty use on your SportWagen. 793599

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Good product. The online video was much more helpful than the paper instructions. The receiver piece was not welded on 90 deg to the bumper..didn't notice until I had installed it. But it installed fairly easily. I have a 2017 Alltrack. The setup is slightly different than a Sportwagen. The video says to push the red tab on the taillight harness release. You PULL the red tab, then push down on the release tab on the plug. Also, on the Alltrack, you don't need to remove the bottom, innermost screws on the wheelwheel insert. (See my picture) Also, no cutting of the fascia is necessary. I ended up taking the silver section off the bumper, but that was a lot of work. I was able to push it over the receiver and it popped into place. 770990

We are so happy with our hitch, it was very easy to install once the rear body panel was removed. After that hurdle everything was very straight forward. We sweated over getting the larger 2” hitch but we have never needed it so this worked out great. We use the bike rack every week, and we also use the roof rack for kayaks every week hence the need for a secondary rack system. We could not be happier every time we use it makes us smile. As the wise one once told me (the wife) that rack doesn’t owe us a penny it was a great investment. 729074

  • Hidden Trailer Hitch for a 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI

Once either of these hitches is installed only the receiver will be visible. These are both 1-1/4 inch Class I trailer hitches. If you want a 2 inch hitch then I recommend # 306-X7309. The area on the 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen that needs to be trimmed to install Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24949 is covered in the instructions which I have linked. I also included a picture showing this step from the instructions. Any trusted mechanic or RV dealer with a service center can install the hitch. I recommend calling around to see what different places charge for labor. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to...

  • Recommended Towing Components for 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen TDI with DSG Transmission
For your 2015 VW Golf TDI, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24949. Then for a ball mount I recommend the Draw-Tite # 3590 which comes with the pin and clip included. For your hitch ball, I recommend # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch diameter or # 19258 for a 2 inch ball. For your trailer wiring, I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C59236. This will require splicing into your factory wiring with quick splice connectors...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
Trailer hitch # 24949 is a fit for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. It also is listed for all models of the 2017 Golf Sportwagen. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you. If you plan on doing some towing the recommended ball mount is # 3590. For a 1-7/8 inch ball use # 19257 and for a 2 inch ball use # 19258. And for trailer wiring you can use # 118730 to add a 4-Way flat to the rear of the vehicle. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI
For your 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI, there are two hitches available. They offer the same amount of clearance but I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24949 for 2 reasons. The first reason is that it does not have a reinforced collar on the receiver opening which will give you a very slight clearance advantage when backing up at the lip of the receiver. The second reason is that Curt requires a stabilization strap # 18050 for...

  • Class I Trailer Hitch for 2010 Volkswagen Golf-SportWagen
Draw-Tite Hitch # 24949 is a confirmed fit on later model year Volkswagen Golf SportWagens but not on your 2010 model year. For your 2010 Golf Wagon you'll use Draw-Tite's Class I hitch # 24866 which installs without drilling. I confirmed that with my contact at Draw-Tite that this is the correct fit for your car. For a matching ball mount you can use part # 3593 along with 1-7/8-inch hitch ball # 19256 or 2-inch ball # 19258. For a wiring harness use part # C59236 which is shown in...

  • Trailer Hitch Availability that Fits 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
Draw Tite offers a hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack. For that you would want the part # 24949. This happens to also fit the non-Alltrack 2017 Golf as well. For a compatible cargo carrier we have the # C18110 which is our most popular option.

  • 2011 VW Golf Sportwagon Trailer Hitch Recommendation
For your 2011 Volkswagen Golf TDI Sportwagen you would want the Draw Tite hitch part # 24866 which is a confirmed fit and would work well. I prefer Draw Tite over Curt as Draw Tite does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a bike rack like Curt does. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks and this one showed up...

  • Draw-Tite or Curt Trailer Hitch for 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI
The Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch # 24949 weighs 20-1/4 pounds and the Curt # C11422 weighs just a tad more at 22 pounds. Both Class I hitches are confirmed to fit your 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI and they feature just about identical dimensions and brackets so they will install the same on your vehicle. Both will have about a 2 inch hitch pin hole to bumper clearance measurement and a 14-1/2 inch ground clearance dimension when mounted. Both have the same 2,000 pound towing and 200...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and 2-Bike Rack for 2016 VW Golf SportWagen
I'd be happy to get you the best setup for your 2016 VW Golf SportWagen. To start, I recommend using Draw-Tite # 24949 which is a Class I hitch that has a 1-1/4 inch receiver and a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. For a bike rack you will need to stick with a Class I rack that fits a 1-1/4 inch receiver and a great option would be the Swagman XC # S64650. This rack offers a 4 inch rise for ground clearance and measures 10-1/2 inches from hitch pin hole to the wheel loop and a weight...

  • Will Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Block Drive Assist Sensors or Camera on 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen
Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24949 will not interfere with any of the sensors at the back of your 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen. The hitch itself would not interfere with a backup camera but if you have something in the hitch such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then that could partially block the view. Any trusted mechanic or RV dealer with a service center can install the hitch. I would call around to see what different places charge in labor. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2020 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
For your 2020 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack we have the Draw Tite hitch part # 24949 that I recommend highly. When it is installed only the hitch opening hangs below the rear bumper which makes it mostly hidden as well as helps with ground clearance. For trailer wiring then we have the ZCI part # 119250KIT which installs without requiring any splicing as well. Then for a ball mount you'd want the part # 3590 and hitch ball part # 19256.
