Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2016 Mazda 6 - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2016 Mazda 6 we're going to be taking a look at the and also showing how to install the Draw-Tite sports frame custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver. This offers the 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening. Its part number is 24908. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like installed. We've got our rounded crosstube. It's going to go from side plate to side plate. Here in the middle we've got our receiver tube opening.

Now this is a class one so it's 1-1/4" by 1-1/4". This is going to work out well for very small trailer applications, smaller cargo carriers, or maybe two bike racks. That's really where your class one fills in and is built to suit. Now for holding all of our items in place we've got a 1/2" diameter pinhole. Want to be sure that we use class one-rated accessories.

It looks like we're going to have enough room really for whatever we wanted to use, whether it was a locking hitch pin, regular hitch pin, or maybe anti-rattle device. Got the plate-style safety chain connection points around the bottom. See our oval-shaped holes, nice and open there. Should be able to get whatever connected that we would want. Now as far as weight ratings are concerned, we've got a 200 pound tongue weight rating. That's the max downward force we can put here at our receiver tube opening.

We've got a 2,000 pound gross trailer weight rating. That's going to be the total weight of our trailer and anything that we load up on it. We do of course want to check the owner's manual on the 6, see what it's tow rating is. Then we need to go off of whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now a few measurements that are going to be helpful when selecting bike racks or hitch cargo carriers will be from the ground to the inside top edge of our receiver tube opening we've got about 11". Then from the center of our hitch pinhole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about 6-1/4". Now to begin our installation we need to get our hardware put in place.

You'll see we're here on the driver side, and in the frame rail we're going to have two holes located here and here. It's going to be behind the long oval-shaped hole and just in front of the larger hole which we're going to be using as our access point. We'll take one of our fish wires. We'll go in that forward hole, bring it back here where we can find it, and bring that one of our large access hole. Now we want to slide on one of our square hole spacer blocks and thread on one of our carriage bolts just like that. Now we'll stick the block up in there, then slide it down forward. Then we'll put our bolt in and we'll bring them right down and through just like that. Now for our rear mounting location we're going to do that exact same thing. Now we'll go over to our passenger side and repeat the same process there. Now we're ready to get our hitch raised up into position. It's going to be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you. We're just going to put these pull wires right down through the openings in our hitch bracket. We're going to go up and then rotate it right up over our exhaust. You can see our bolts and our pull wires come right down through. We want to remove our pull wires now. Then onto each of our bolts we're going to place on a conical tooth washer. You can see it's got teeth. We want those to face up towards the hitch. Then we're going to thread on one of the provided hex nuts. Now with one started on each side really well, our hitch is going to rest there. We'll take our pull wires off the forward attachment point and get our hardware on there as well. Now we need to go in and snug down our hardware. Once we've got all four of our spots snugged down, then we'll look in the instructions. There we'll find our torque specifications. We need to get all four locations torqued down appropriately. At that point, with all of our fasteners torqued down to specification, our hitch is ready for use. That's going to complete the installation of the Draw-Tite sports frame custom fit class one trailer hitch receiver, part number 24908, on our 2016 Mazda 6.

The product was shipped quickly and there was good email follow-up after we ordered. Neither of us is particularly mechanical, but we wanted to give a shot at installing it ourselves. The instructions were clear and helpful. We felt confident in tackling the project because of the videos and information that were shared through etrailer, and it was a success! (Note: smaller hands are helpful for this particular install given how the spacer plate feeds into the holes, but it wasn’t a problem.) We specifically wanted the hitch so we can use a platform bike rack as opposed to a trunk rack with straps. This is definitely going to make life a lot easier in that regard. If we end up switching cars in the future, we would definitely come back to etrailer to order another hitch. 467355

This product fit perfect on my 2017 Mazda 6! My father and I installed this hitch in 30 minutes. We did not even put the car on a lift. We watched etrailers 4 minute install video which made the install super easy. You will love this product. Also, the hitch goes pretty far back and does not take away from your awesome car look. I also reached out to the etrailer team about what bike rack would be the best fit for my car. The team reached back out same day. etrailer is an amazing company. 525902

Was extremely easy to install. Took me 30 minutes to install by myself without the car jacked up. Looks nice installed on the car and does not stick out like I thought it would. Performed as it should, although I am only using it for a bike rack, for now. 85794

Thanks for the pictures.Would it be possible for you to send me a picture taken from the side that would show how far it sticks out without the bike rack?I am curious about the distance from the retaining pin hole to the back of the bumper, in regard to my Coleman bike rack being able to clear the bumper. Thanks for any help you can give me. Jim

I finally got a warm day without rain for this driveway installation by myself. The fish wire for bolt installation worked brilliantly however unscrewing it in restricted space certainly requires eye protection the way the end flicks around. Being alone is a challenge to hoist the bar as you described but with wood blocks and tie down tape I managed to get it to position to get the nuts on as shown in photos. It took me an hour and 15 minutes to install. Looks good, eh! 413403

The install video was very helpful. I have a 2017 Mazda 6 and the installation was exactly as described. One thing I did (perhaps not necessary) was put a bit of duct tape on each bolt so I didn't inadvertently push them back into the frame. I also didn't jack the car up (I didn't have to) and completed the install by myself by lying my body between the hitch and the ground to support it. I'm not saying this is the easiest. Obviously having two people and the car lifted would make more sense, but I'm just saying what worked for me doing the job solo. 362355

Shipping was quick. Installation took me about 45 minutes plus several trips to home depot and auto parts store to get the right tools. So biggest advice is to make sure you have all the tools you need. The biggest slowdown during installation for me was not having a deep 3/4" socket and not having a 10" extension for the socket wrench to reach up. Once I had all the tools, I was able to get this installed on my own without a lift. I am a small guy in good shape and was able to wrestle it into place using yoga blocks and my arms and legs to shift one end up while the other was on the blocks. It would definitely be a faster, easier job with someone helping you. I'm using the hitch for a 2-bike rack, and it seems to be working without any issue. :-) 733076

When I went to install the draw-tite receiver I couldn’t get the holes on one side to line up with the frame. I pulled it back down and noticed it was bent on one side about 1/2 inch. I was able to straighten it in a vice then it fit well. Will attach a pic showing the bent bracket on the right side as well as the straight one on the left. The shipping container was not damaged at all so I think it was not done during shipping. Other than that everything else was great. Fast shipping and good customer service 710755

Because trailer hitches are made from a mild steel, they can get flexed during shipping or in transport from the manufacturer to our warehouse. A vice is a great way to correct hitch flex. I have linked a help article that covers some other ways to correct a flexed hitch.

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Can I Tow A Small Trailer With Draw-Tite Hitch On 2017 Mazda 6
Yes, the Draw-Tite Class I receiver part # 24908 is rated for up to 200 lbs of tongue weight so it supports the weight of your small trailer and gear. Tongue weight is normally 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight and it sounds like your tongue weight could be around 60 lbs at the max. As long as you do not exceed the 200 lb tongue weight capacity the Draw-Tite can support it. However, I was able to find your owner's manual as well and it lists many different configurations that depends...

The only other thing I recommend is protecting your investments with the Locking Anti-Rattle, Threaded Hitch Pin for Swagman Hitch Racks # S64029 which will lock the rack to your hitch. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch.
