Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Installed on a 2013 GTI 4 Door. Installation was not too bad. Definitely need a breaker bar for loosening the existing bolt on the sub frame and a torque wrench to tighten everything down. I did it as a one man job and it was tricky getting the hitch into place, took some patience. Overall it did not take me too long and the result was great. Note, #4 on the instructions should read "Passenger Side" as said in other reviews. I would also recommend removing the plastic from around the bottom of the bumper as it makes moving the hitch into position easier. Using it with a Swagman XTC-2 and it is also awesome. 176590

Excellent hitch receiver and no rattles, which were a concern based on some of the other reviews. No loss of ground clearance is also a plus over the other brand that is available for sale. As others have said, removal of the rear valence trim piece and the use of a breaker bar for the passenger side existing sub-frame bolt both help with installation. I also borrowed a set of ramps from a buddy, which also helped. The directions are otherwise pretty clear (save for the slight mix-up in step 4 of driver vs. passenger side). All told, it took me about an hour and a half, not 40 minutes, but still not an unreasonable amount of time. A torque wrench to tighten everything back up according to the manufacturer's recommendation is also a good idea. 491976

This is my 3rd or 4th hitch I bought from eTrailer. Their service is top notch and I refer anyone interested in a hitch to them all the time. I went with the Draw-Tite over the Curt for my GTI because it sits much higher up against the underside of the car and looks very clean once installed. Install on this hitch is fairly straight forward, no drilling or any weird modifications needed other than cutting your heat shield a tiny bit in the corner. Fishing the rear most driver's side bolt and plate into the frame is the hardest part of this install. It took a little bit of finagaling to get it into position. If my finger was like 1/4" longer it would've taken 2 minutes. After a bit I figured out I need to put the bolt through the plate inside the frame just above the bigger hole and then pull it into the little hole with the wire (you'll see what I mean when you get there). Took about 40 minutes all said and done. 116874

For a 2014 VW GTI, dropping the exhaust was easy. Quality of the product was great, from a material standpoint. And it is nicely hidden. Slipping the hitch between the bumper and exhaust was a bit more challenging. But the fitment on the passenger side was not good. I'll try to explain........one of the bolts used to mount the hitch is also a bolt that is integral to the right rear frame that contains the suspension and hub. That part of the frame is angled silightly but the hitch is not. This caused a fitment issue that resulted in me havind to slightly bend the flange on the hitch so it would sit flat/flush with the frame, allowint the bolt to be tightened appropriately. 148557

Instructions were straight forward and simple to understand. Installation was about 1.5 hours with my son and I to install. Went well and happy with the installation. I would highly recommend removing the lower section of the bumper for the install. It is removed by taking out 4 screws and popping it off. Made the install MUCH easier. 134630

First I would like to say that the buying experience from etrailer is second to none. Every aspect of the process was first class; from the ease of ordering, the email notifications updating shipping progress, to the packaging; first class! The Hitch: Love the hitch, and is as advertised. The hitch is invisible once installed except for the 1 1/4' receiver, which is barely noticeable due to the black valence. There is also zero reduction in ground clearance. Installation: I installed the hitch without assistance, so can be a one man job, although assistance in lining it up would be helpful. There is one error in the instructions; Step #4 states "on the driver's side" when it is actually on the passenger's side. Very obvious but might confuse someone. There is one omission; It was necessary to bend the lip of the inner fender support out of the way on the passenger side so that the hitch could slide into place. 103061

The hitch was well packaged when it arrived and was delivered in a reasonable period of time. The hitch itself is great! Only the receiver is visible once it's installed so it is really clean. As for installation: Make sure you have a breaker bar for the passenger side suspension bolt and a torque wrench to reinstall it. Also, on the GTI take off the black plastic trim under the rear bumper when you install the hitch - there are 4 torx head screws to undo and it just pops out, it makes the installation much easier. 80039

Dave R. - Would you mind confirming that you have a 2010 GTI? May I ask what you plan to tow with this hitch? Im thinking about towing a small trailer with a dirt bike and equipment. Would like to know your experience so far. Thanks for your review.

I have a 2010 GTI with a six speed manual transmission. I have a 4x8 Harbor Freight folding utility trailer that I plan to use for work around the house. I wont be hauling any loads of gravel, but for bulky items and materials it seems to be exactly what I need. Based on what Ive seen so far although I havent yet done it I think it should haul a motorcycle easily.

Yes, David R is right, you will need a small pry bar to move the suspension bar to fit the hitch. Its a tight fit and the cleanest the cleanest hitch around and suggest that you remove the black plastic diffuser as well.

Installation was much easier than I read on forums. The hitch itself has a minimal look being tucked in under the bumper. No cutting of the valence was required. I do want to mention that it took a lot of prying and coaxing to line up bolt holes on the passenger side. Though it is doable, a third fishing wire would make the job a lot easier. Installation was fairly easy, and I would highly recommend reading Altaf's review from 03/30/2015 - as that made the most sense. You definitely do not need to remove the driver's side exhaust mount, and using ramps and removing the valance was very helpful. I would also say you'd need a few extensions for the harder to reach spots, so keep that in mind. I did this solo, and just used a milk crate (or a jack would work) to keep the hitch in place will I started the nuts. I also kept the bold guiders on to ensure they didn't go back into the frame as I jimmied it into position. Hope this helps. 381616

This hitch was overall pretty easy to install. I did the install with my car backed up on a set of ramps and this gave plenty of room to work and drop the muffler to install the hitch. The toughest part of the install was fishing one of the bolts through on the driver side. The access hole didn't seem quite wide enough, so I pried on it a bit of a big alignment pin and it went right in. (You couldn't even really tell I had pried on it. that's how close it was to going in.) Other than the issue with the access hole being too small, the install was really simple and I did not have to remove the rear bumper or plastic and was able to install it myself with no help. An extra set of hands wouldn't hurt to hold everything in place though. One word of caution though is be sure you order a Class I rack to use with this hitch. I ordered a class 2 Yakima rack by mistake and it would not fit. It would not slide in far enough due to a backing plate in the hitch. 199486

Still functioning great and not showing any sings of wear. I use it to haul a kuat bike rack for 1-2 bikes and it works perfectly. I love how discrete it is.

The hitch and etrailer get 5 stars. Fast shipping, price match policy and excellent customer service and support! - Two people will make the install go a lot easier. - It took a couple of hours to complete the installation, not 30 minutes. - Have extensions to use with your socket wrench. Also a breaker bar will help when you get to step 4 in the instructions as this bolt is very tight. - My car is a 2014 VW GTI Wolfsburg Edition 4-door. My comments below may or may not apply to all years of this generation. It is not mentioned in the instructions but you'll have a lot more room and visibility if you remove the black valence below the rear bumper. Make this step #0. Here's how to remove the valence: #0A. Remove the 4 torx screws that secure the valence underneath the bumper. #0B. As you're facing the rear bumper, start from one corner and pull the valance straight back towards you. There are several horizontal plastic clips molded into the valence that secure it to the bumper. This step will remove the valance. In step 1 of the instructions, it is not necessary to disconnect the driver's side (US) exhaust hanger, just leave it in place. You do need to remove the passenger's side exhaust hanger. In step 2 of the instructions, instead of cutting or folding the heat shield, I poked a hole large enough for the carriage bolt to go through. I have zero rattles or noise from the heat shield, plus it looks OEM! :-) You do want to remove the bolt (13mm?) that's holding the heat shield up on the driver's side so you can see the frame hole and have room to operate. Just screw it back in at the end of the install. Step 4 in the instruction's has an error. The M12 hex bolt they are referring to is on the passenger's side (US), not driver's. The diagram is correct. I had a difficult time with reinstalling the passenger's side exhaust hanger bracket because the hole's weren't lined up. I'd recommend loosely installing one bolt on each side of the hitch first just to hold it up. Get the exhaust hanger lined up and tightened, then proceed with tightening the other bolts. That's about it. Otherwise follow the instructions that came with the hitch. Just take your time and have plenty of lighting so you can see underneath. Back the GTI up on ramps or a lift. Be safe, don't work under the car with just a jack, have proper jack stands! 181603

Absolutely love this hitch. My GTI sits a little lower so I needed as much ground clearance as possible. This will definitely do the job for me. Fairly easy to install. I was dreading dropping the exhaust but that was easy. Using the fish wire for placing the bolts into the frame rail was a new challenge but again, easy once I figured out to do it. I am excited to have a receiver to haul my bicycle and very pleased with the draw-tite version! Removing the rear valance was easy and helped a lot. 651236

This hitch was easy to install and fits nicely above the muffler. Most of the hitch is hidden behind the bumper and only the receiver itself is actually visible. I did not take the time to remove lower part of bumper which some other reviewers suggested would be helpful. I assessed and decided it was not necessary - I was able to pretty easily fit it into place without removing any part of bumper. I did not cut nor remove the heatshield - I simply used an awl to poke a hole through the shield to expose the frame mounting hole and enlarged hole in shield to 1/2" with small electrical wire cutters. The hitch bracket was then just bolted over the shield. 590607

I purchased this hitch for my son so he could mount his bike rack and transport it safely. The hitch is an excellent fit for his car and is almost unnoticeable; others that I considered getting were downright ugly and the crossbars were visible from behind the car. All you can see with the Draw-Tite hitch is the receiver assembly. The assembly was a bit challenging but it wasn't necessary to modify the car or completely remove the exhaust system to install it. I've purchased Draw-Tite products previously, and will continue to do so in the future. 586340

- 24904
by:

The hitch fits well and just the receiver tube is visible below the bumper, so it does not reduce ground clearance very much. I recommend removing the rear bumper cover completely (also requires removing tail lights) - it is a bit of extra work but allows much more visibility and room when maneuvering the hitch into location. I also created a clearance hole in the heat shield for the driver's side rear mount (as suggested by another reviewer) - clamps the heat shield in place so no rattles or rubbing. It is very helpful to have a second person assist when initially lifting the hitch and starting all the fasteners. I am using the hitch to carry bikes on a two bike rack. 570563

Installed on a 2012 GTI. Needed a set of ramps, some various sockets, extenders, and a breaker bar for the 12mm bolt. Instructions were mostly correct, with one small typo - the 12mm bolt is on the passenger side, not the driver side. Everything seemed to go into place pretty easily, and the hitch does not appear to affect ride quality at all. This updated version does NOT contact my exhaust or muffler at all, so no rattling either. It's not the fault of the hitch, but this hitch does not allow me to put my Thule T2 in the upright position, as the front wheel holder just barely contacts my rear bumper. I'm currently getting in touch with Thule about finding a solution, but it looks like others have just cut down the wheel holder a bit to make it fit. 467069

Installed on a 2011 VW GTI. Took about an hour to get the hitch fitted up. The only semi-difficult step was getting everything lined up while threading on the first couple of nuts. Like others have said, spending the extra 2 minutes to pop off the lower valence (remove four T-25 torx screws and then pull it straight back) helps a lot with opening up some room to see what you're doing. Hitch looks great installed, it's nearly hidden under the bumper and supports my bike rack with no issues. This is a great addition to the GTI, it makes an already practical car even more so. etrailer shipping and updates were awesome, the hitch arrived at my doorstep in Socal two days after I ordered it. 434551

Perfect fit; all holes line up EXACTLY with no modifications needed. This hitch is barely visible from the back of my 2010 VW GTI (you can only see the end of the receiver, and even that is flush/ inline with the rest of the rear bumper cover). There was no change or loss in ground clearance or departure angle, which on a car this low is important! I use this hitch to mount my Kuat bike rack and it's the perfect combo for easy access to the rear hatch while maintaining a clean look to the car. True bolt on design that I installed myself with hand tools in about an hour. Shipping was great, item showed up on time with easy to follow instructions. 409551

The Drawtite hitch installed perfectly on my 2013 VW GTI with virtually no issues. Appearance-wise it almost disappears under the bumper with only the receiver showing. Unlike other hitches for the same car, there is absolutely no interference between the muffler and hitch. The only improvements I could recommend for the hitch is include three wire bolt starters instead of the two. The two 1/2" carriage bolts on the drivers side could benefit from some clearance work on the heads to make them easier to insert into the frame. The ordering process was super, with absolutely no miscommunications or confusion. James made it easy to order to right parts for my application. 385542

This hitch is solid on my GTI. I use it with my Yakima bike rack and have never had issues. It's great that it is mostly hidden as well. You only see the 1.25" receiver from the back of your car. Installation is a little involved, but patience is key. I did have an issue with alignment because I tightened one bolt too much before getting them all started. Once I backed it off a little, everything lined up. 347566

This review is for the current version that I purchased and had installed onto my 2010 4-dr GTI in Oct 2015. My local shop installed the hitch with no issue; the installation took about 1.5 - 2 hrs of labor. I also have an aftermarket Milltek exhaust on my car, and there is no interference with the hitch receiver that I can hear. True to description, only the receiver hitch is visible under the rear bumper cover. For carrying a hitch-mounted bike rack (why I bought the product), the hitch receiver works perfectly! 229555

Installed easy on a 2012 GTI to use with a bicycle rack. Would recommend taking the 4 screws out and to pop the bumper off. The intent of this hitch makes sense, only the receiver tube is exposed from the rear of the car and everything else is hidden under the bumper. However, a major design fault is that the exhaust has about a 1/8" to 1/4" clearance between the back of the receiver tube on the hitch. Exhausts are not static, they move when going over bumps, under acceleration/deceleration, etc. The exhaust (and this is the STOCK exhaust) is constantly bumping and knocking against the hitch. It even gets worse when the vehicle warms up as the rubber exhaust hangers seem to stretch by a minimal amount and sometimes the exhaust is resting ON the hitch. I am not alone and an internet search will reveal similar cases. Sure there are fixes published on the internet that you can grind the hitch or bend a portion of the exhaust, but why design a hitch with such minimal clearances when it's not needed? Disappointed since to perform any of the previously mentioned fixes I need to remove the hitch or suffer with the noise. 81003

- 24904
by:

Hitch fits great. Easy installation with a set of vehicle ramps; I found jack stands were helpful to hold the hitch up while I positioned the bolts. In order to avoid any possible contact with the exhaust, I opted to bend the exhaust hangar arms slightly to get another 1/4" of clearance or so. Also, fast shipping and excellent customer service. 72178

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Compatibility of Swagman Dispatch Platform Bike Rack with Draw-Tite # 24904 Installed on 2013 VW GTI
  • I wish I could provide you with a definitive yes or no answer, but we have not yet had the opportunity to install a hitch on a 2013 GTI, so we do not have any dimensions telling us how far the receiver will be recessed under the vehicle, which is the key indication of whether a bike rack will be compatible with a given vehicle. If you already have the hitch installed, you would simply measure from the hitch pin hole rearward until you reach the furthest rearward point of the bumper, which...

  • Compatibility of a Kuat Sherpa 2.0 and a Draw-Tite Sport Frame Hitch on a 2012 Volkswagen GTI
  • Using the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack for the 1-1/4 inch hitch, # SH12G, with the Draw-Tite trailer Hitch, # 24904 will be no problem on your 2012 Volkswagen GTI. The Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch is a custom-fit hitch designed for the 2012 Volkswagen GTI. The trailer hitch will bolt on to the frame of you vehicle using existing holes in the frame. Because this hitch is custom-fit, Draw-Tite has designed this product to allow the user the ability to use hitch accessories with little...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Installer for 2014 VW GTI
  • For your 2014 VW GTI, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24904. This Class I hitch is custom-fit for your GTI, which means it will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver and has a 2,000 pound towing capacity along with a 200 pound tongue weight capacity. We do not have any specific recommendations regarding a local installer, however any nearby mechanic or auto shop with a good...

  • Will Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver 24904 Fit 2013 Volkswagen GTI 4-Door Hatchback
  • The Class I trailer hitch you referenced, # 24904 from Draw-Tite, will fit your 2013 Volkswagen GTI 4-door hatchback. It fits all versions: I confirmed this with Draw-Tite. No drilling or welding are required for installation; only temporary lowering of the exhaust for easier access to the mounting points and possibly some minor trimming of the heat shield. I have linked you to several articles concerning hitch installation that may be helpful to you. Please note that the tools required...

  • What is the Ground Clearance with the Draw-Tite 1-1/4 Inch Hitch # 24904 on a 2011 VW GTI
  • The Draw-Tite Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 24904, will end up being located in the same place as the Curt Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # C11000, on your 2011 Volkswagen GTI. It is located right under the rear fascia of your vehicle. The ball mounts that are used with these hitches will always have to be used in the rise position. I am including a link to the Installation instructions on both of the hitches. The instructions will show a side view of where the hitch is located on...

  • Hitch Fit for a 2016 Volkswagen GTI
  • I can help you identify the right hitch for your 2016 VW GTI. The hitch that fits the 2016 GTI is the Curt Class I hitch # C11412, not the Draw-Tite # 24904 you were looking at, which is great news because that hitch required some trimming but this Curt hitch does not. To install the Curt hitch # C11412, you will have to temporarily lower the exhaust while installing the hitch but there is not drilling or cutting to be done. It's important to note that Curt recommends the use of a...

  • Fix for Exhaust Rattle After Installing the # 24851 Hitch on a 2010 Volkswagen GTI
  • Exhaust rattles do occur on some vehicles. I have not had the opportunity to install this hitch on the GTI yet so I spoke with my contact at Draw-Tite. He stated that the exhaust was taken into account when designing the hitch and that they have had no complaints about exhaust rattles from customers who have installed the hitch. The instructions for the # 24904 hitch show that hitch will be sandwiched between the rear exhaust hanger and the vehicle frame member. This repositioning should...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit for 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI
  • I have a hitch for your 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI, but the Draw-Tite # 24904 trailer hitch you referenced is not a fit. This hitch is confirmed to fit 2010 - 2014 VW GTI models. For your 2015 Golf GTI, you will want to use the Curt Class I Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C11412. This is the only trailer hitch option available for your Golf GTI. Once installed, this hitch's crosstube will be visible in addition to the receiver. I've linked an installation video of this hitch for you to see...

  • How to Avoid Dual Exhaust With Cargo Carrier on 2013 VW Golf GTI
  • There should be about 18" from the exhaust tip to the nearest part of the carrier if possible, though another option is to add a cargo carrier with a rise in the shank. Your 2013 VW GTI only has Class I hitches such as the Draw-Tite # 24904 available and there is one cargo carrier for a Class I hitch, the Curt # C18110 which has a rise in the shank of 3-3/4" that may allow it to clear the exhaust, particularly if you can down-turn the exhaust tips. Otherwise, the only other option...

  • Will Swagman XC Bike Rack Fit Trailer Hitch 24904 on a 2013 Volkswagen GTI
  • The Swagman XC bike rack # S64650 does fit Class I trailer hitch # 24904. The rack itself weighs about 29 pounds leaving plenty of capacity for 2 bikes. I have linked a video review of this bike rack for you.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2014 Volkswagen GTI
  • When installing an aftermarket trailer hitch receiver there is sometimes a rattle between the exhaust and new hitch. It doesn't happen often but it can. I can't really say which of the two hitch receivers for your 2014 Volkswagen GTI. Both hitches are designed to fit around the exhaust without an issue however, the exhaust system isn't always in the exact same place from one car to the next. Even within the exact same model and year. I've linked a help article on correcting the rattling...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2012 Volkswagen GTI
  • To start, lets look at trailer hitches. There are 3 hitches for the 2012 Volkswagen GTI, see link. I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24904 over the Curt hitch # C11000. The reason is that Curt requires the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050, for their warranty requirements and the Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch trailer hitches do not. Since you are going to use the hitch for a bike rack, you would not need the ball mount that comes with the Hidden Hitch so Draw-Tite hitch # 24904...

  • Trailer Hitch, Bike Racks, and Roof Rack to Carry 2 Single Bikes and 1 Tandem Bike on a 2013 VW GTI
  • On a Class I trailer hitch you are correct, there would be too much torque on the hitch because of having the weight of a third bike that far away from the receiver. It is like using a cheater bar to loosen a lug nut. What you can do is use the hitch to mount a Class I compatible bike rack, like the Swagman Titan, # S63400, to carry the 2 single bikes. This hitch has a 3 inch rise in the shank to provide better ground clearance. With a hitch like # 24904 installed the top of the receiver...

  • Which Part Number is Current Part Number for Draw Tite Hitch Fit on 2012 Volkswagen GTI
  • The 24851 is no longer made anymore. It actually has been gone for about 4 years. The part # 24904 is the current hitch fit for your vehicle and would an improved design. You can order replacement hardware for it though with part # RHK. You would need to select Draw Tite from the drop down menu on it's product page and then enter the part number and we will ship you out the kit.
