Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2010 Chevrolet Impala - Curt

Today on our 2010 Chevrolet Impala we're going to be installing the CURT trailer hitch receiver, part number C12252. Now here's what our hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch, such as a ball mount, a bicycle rack, or a cargo carrier. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground we have 13-1/4". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper we have about 7". Now let's go ahead and install our hitch. We're going to begin our installation by first installing a safety strap that will help support the exhaust. Next we're going to need to remove three rubber exhaust hangers.

There's two back here at the back side of the muffler and there's one up a little bit farther. Now in order to remove our rubber exhaust hangers we're going to use a little bit of spray lubricant and a large pry bar. Next we can go ahead and use our safety strap to go ahead and lower the exhaust down out of the way a little bit. Next let's go ahead and point out our mounting locations for our hitch. There's a total of six mounting locations: three on each side. We'll begin over here on the passenger side. We'll be using this hole right here, right here, and this one right here.

Over here on the driver side it will be this hole here, here, and right here. Next let's go ahead and point out the hardware used on each of our frame rails. The two locations here and here on both the driver and passenger side will use the same hardware. It will be a 1/2" by 1-1/4"-long carriage bolt, square hole spacer block, and a 1/2" flange nut. Here's what it will look like in the frame, these locations. Now in order to get our carriage bolt and spacer block into the vehicle's frame we'll be using the access hole located here on both sides, and we'll be using a bolt leader or a fish wire to do that.

Let's go ahead and install our hardware at these two locations. To install our hardware here at these locations we'll go ahead and take our bolt leader, go through the mounting location, come out the access hole. Take our square hole spacer block followed by the carriage bolt, put those both on the bolt leader, push them both up into the vehicle's frame, and pull down into position. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process at this location, as well as the two over on the passenger side. Now for the middle two mounting locations we'll be using a 1/2" carriage bolt, another square hole spacer block, and a 1/2" flange nut; it will sit up in there like that. Now in order to get the carriage bolt and spacer block into this mounting location we'll be using this access hole here, and we'll again be using the fish wire or the bolt leader. Let's go ahead and install our hardware at this two locations. We'll go through the mounting location.

We'll then come out the access hole, take our square hole spacer block, put it on the bolt leader followed by the carriage bolt, both into the vehicle's frame, and pull it down into position. Go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. Now with all of our hardware installed in the vehicle's frame it's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you raise the hitch up into position. Once you have the hitch up into position you can go ahead and loosely install all the flange nuts, followed by tightening them down and then torquing to the manufacturer's specification. Next we'll go ahead and put our rubber exhaust hangers back in place. Go ahead and use our safety strap to help pull the exhaust back up. Then we can reconnect our rubber exhaust hanger. We can then remove the safety strap, and that will do it for our installation of the CURT trailer hitch receiver, part number C12252, on our 2010 Chevrolet Impala. .

What a great experience! Ordered on Friday, shipped on Sunday via UPS ground, received it on Wednesday, and installed it today in about an hour. Service was great, with emails before shipping, during shipping (w/tracking link), and after arrival with helpful information. I'm not a mechanic and installed it by myself in my garage after sunset so I had to use a flashlight to help on the visibility. Installation was still as easy as the videos on the etrailer website demonstrated. It was a little heavy and you do need to be careful because I did knock one of the bolts up into the frame and had to fish it out. It wasn't too hard to get out but I did get that sinking feeling! Make sure you have a deep socket and a 4" extension to help ensure you have good clearance when tightening the nuts. The receiver is as invisible as the pictures on the website show. I'll use etrailer for all of my future towing equipment needs!!! Thanks to George, Josh, and Patrick! 77887

This was easy to install with just some jacks to lift the car and something to tighten the bolts with and the muffler dropped down by just using silicon spray on the rubber mounts and pushing them off the hangers then pushing them back on after the hitch was installed. Fast shipping, all the parts where included, easy to order, I would buy from etrailer again! 559363

Well built, everything fit as it should. No missing parts. Instructions said 60 minutes installation time for a novice, took me about an hour and a half due to operator error (put the wrong length bolts in a couple of holes) and had to let the dogs out three or four times. Instructions (plus the video) were very clear and helpful. Helpful tip, definitely put the car up on ramps, the extra ground clearance is nice to have. A bit awkward to lift the unit by yourself, but do-able, just take it easy. Everything fit well. The bolt fishing wire process is a bit tedious, but not having to do any drilling is well worth a menial task. Exhaust hangers come off pretty easy, go back on a lot easier. All in all, good solid product, no issues, very satisfied. 417398

I got a new Impala and needed a trailer hitch to take my boat to the lake, and for my last car I had taken it to a local shop to install one. But when I inquired into the cost of a new hitch and installation I got sticker shock. So I went online to eTrailer to do some shopping. The price for the hitch was very affordable and I endeavored to get one and install it myself, and save some money. The installati0on videos for the hitch and the wiring harness were really good, and gave me the confidence that I could install it myself. The hitch came, and I got my tools and had it installed wit the harness in about 30 minutes... it was incredibly easy and I was able to take my boat to the lake immediately after for my first sail of the year. The eTrailer staff was very helpful and I highly recommend them, I really felt that I was dealing with a company that took customer service seriously. My experience getting this hitch and installing it was flawless... if you're looking for a hitch and you are a little scared of the installation... take heart... this company gives you everything you need including video instruction. And the price was very affordable. 260178

A $200 labor charge is quite steep for this installation. Our labor rate is $70 per hour and for this hitch, wed only charge for 1/2 or 1 hour of labor.

I installed this hitch for my grandfather, so he could hall around his scooter on a hitch mounted cargo carrier. I was a bit skeptical when I read the instructions and they stated an install time of about 40 minutes, so I timed it. They were just about spot on. From the time I brought the car into the garage and jacked it up, to torqueing down the hardware; I was done in 59 minutes. (I timed it) Very easy install. It would have been nice to have a second set of hand to help me hoist up the hitch, but it is doable with one. I'm excited to see my grandpa use it in action! 164074

I have a 2012 Impala and the video installation was absolutely perfect. I jacked the car up and supported it with jack stands and then followed the video. All done in one hour by myself. If you carefully put on the two front 1 1/2" bolts with your fingers you can easily put on the remaining bolts without any problems. The shipping is very fast. Great product!!! I am going to mount a carrier for my brother's power wheel chair so he can finally get out with me. Thank You for the video installation a great selling point. 162214

Easy to install after viewing instruction video. Don't be intimidated by the fact that you have to lower the exhaust. If you do this with the car on the ground you can use a car jack to lower the exhaust and easily slip the hitch in place. I love how inconspicuous the hitch is on the car, you would never know it was there if you didn't look for it. 153083

I can not begin to let you know how happy I was of my puchasing experience with your company. Your web site made it easy to select exactly what I needed for my vehicle (both hitch and wiring harness). Your communication from the time I received my confirmed order to the time it was delivered to my home was outstanding. I was in no hurry to receive this purchase so I ordered with ground shipping. SHIPPING WAS FREE!!! Then through you great communications, you indicated it was shipping "priority" at no additional cost to me...unheard of. I recieved this yesterday and never opened the box. Today as I was driving home from work, I was mad at myself for not opening the box to see what hardware I would need to purchase. When I opened the box today, taped to the hitch was a bag clearly indicating "hardware". The products I ordered arrived on time (early actually), free from damage, AND, exactly as I ordered them, The order was complete. It took me as long to locate my jack, jack stands, torque wrench and tools, as it did to complete the installation. You can be proud of your company and your vendors for providing top notch products and service. 29213

  • 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch Bike Rack for Heavy Schwinn Bike
  • The hitches made for your 2007 Chevrolet Impala are the 1-1/4-inch Class II type, Draw-Tite # 36407 and Curt # C12252. Both offer the same weight capacity of 300-lbs tongue weight and both are no-drill bolt-on installations using included hardware. The Curt hitch is made here in the USA. You will need to use a Class II-rated hitch bike rack; all such carriers appear on the linked page. Most bike racks, like the Swagman XTC # S64670, top out at a 35-lbs bike weight rating but we do have...

Curt is different as it is a completely different company. The Curt is going to have the edge on which is the most concealed as it is the most recessed under the bumper. The Draw Tite # 36407 is going to sit just as high as the Curt # C12252 but it would stick out more horizontally. I attached pictures of both installed on a vehicle...

Curt is it's own company so the part # C12252 would be similar but made by a different company. If you would like to avoid using the support strap then you can use the Draw-Tite Class II Trailer Hitch...

  • For your 2013 Chevy Impala, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" # C12252. This is a custom fit that will allow you to use the Curt Class II Drawbar # C45522 along with hitch ball # C40018 and pin/clip # F-4. If you need trailer wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118417 which will plug into the factory harness located behind the passenger side tail light assembly.
